In this paper we present a new approach to distribute tasks connected by causal dependencies within a heterogeneous environment, e.g. several resources communicating with each other or a processor grid. Our approach uses an artificial hormone system for task distribution which is able to meet real-time constraints. Several enhancements of the artificial hormone system are made such as partial suppressing of tasks and distributed task termination. © 2010 ieee.

distributed real-time computing is one of the enabling technologies in establishing a team of autonomous robots. A team of soccer playing robots, Paderkicker, contains many computing nodes handling environment perception, artificial intelligence, team coordination, autonomous actuation, and interactions with external entities such as a remote server. Robots must act with varying degrees of autonomy in real-time. the time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme offers a high-level high-precision approach to programming of distributed real-time computing operations. the TMO programmer can apply deadlines to method executions and result-arrivals in a straightforward way. He is thus relieved from dealing with low-level resource allocation details and can show considerably increased productivity. this paper describes a TMO structuring approach for constructing teams of autonomous robots. A TMO network architecture is described for the Paderkicker team. © 2006 ieee.

this paper presents the evaluation of a multithread distributed real-time object-oriented platform. A communication API was developed to increase functionalities of an API that implements the real-time Specification for Java standard, extending it to cover embedded distributed applications. real-time restrictions of the communication are ensured by a time-out mechanism. the API can be adapted to be used with different underlying network and physical mediums. the development focused on restrictive embedded platforms with low performance and small memory. An evaluation in terms of the fulfillment of timing constraints, and memory footprint is presented for a CAN-bus network. the results also demonstrate the timely correctness provided by the communication API running over an RTSJ implementation. © 2006 ieee.

Service selection is one of the current challenges in Service oriented computing (SOC). We propose a service selection method for replacing used services in case of a failure. the approach considers the functional as well as the non-functional features of services. Furthermore, the service selection method searches for a service just meeting the requirements and not for the best possible service exceeding the requirements. this saves services having high QoS properties for clients really in need of them. © 2011 ieee.

Dynamic reconfiguration provides of powerful mechanism to adapt component-based distributed applications to changing environmental conditions. We have designed and implemented a framework for dynamic component reconfiguration on the basis of the Microsoft. NET environment. Within this paper we present an experimental evaluation of our infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based applications. Our framework supports the description of application configurations and profiles and allows for selection of a particular configuration and object/component instantiation based on measured environmental conditions. In response to changes in the environment, our framework will dynamically load new configurations, thus implementing dynamic reconfiguration of an application. Configuration code for components and applications has to interact with man), functional modules and therefore is often scattered around the whole application. We use aspect-oriented programming techniques to handle configuration aspects separately from functional code. the timing behavior of dynamic reconfiguration depends heavely on properties of the underlying programming environment and the operating system. We have studied to which extend and with which performance impact the Microsoft NET Platform supports dynamic reconfiguration. the paper thoroughly discusses our experimental results.

Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. these challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world. With the growing interest in interconnecting different sensor networks across a wide-area communication infrastructure, an overarching challenge becomes one of arriving at an agreed-upon global sensor network architecture that ensures interoperability. Unlike the Internet, where a layered communication stack (namely, the TCP/IP stack) defines the network architecture, a sensor network architecture must unify not only communication interfaces but also programming interfaces, sit-ice network communication and computation functions are tightly intertwined. In that sense, the sensor network architecture refers to a layered stack of distributed computing abstractions. this paper presents an architecture and key considerations in designing and interconnecting local and global sensor networks. Candidate protocols and middleware instantiations are described from the authors' ongoing work that meet the discussed considerations.

Multiprocessor embedded software presents major challenges including the increased complexity and stringent performance requirements raised by parallel processing capability. Although component-based approaches can greatly alleviate the complexity problem, traditional approaches do not provide adequate support for performance requirements on multiprocessors. In this paper, we extend component-based approaches for performance-aware design and analysis of multiprocessor embedded software. the proposed approach begins with a component model that is able to capture concurrent and performance-critical behavior based on UML activity diagrams. It then identifies and exploits potential sources of concurrency within components to produce a multithreaded software design targeted at multiprocessors. We also provide a schedulability analysis that can be used for validating multithreaded software design from a temporal perspective.

Web services provide the potential to offer interoperability of distributed business-to-business application integration between autonomous organisations, regardless of platforms, operating systems or languages. For both user and vendor organisations, this raises immediate problems of trust, security, privacy and prevention of malicious attacks. Until these problems are addressed and solved properly, the use of Web services will be severely restricted because no-one will trust them. We describe in this paper a service-oriented architecture and an Attack-Tolerant Information Retrieval (ATIR) service which tackles certain classes of privacy problems. In particular, we address the problem of protecting a user against malicious attacks upon an information service when the user retrieves some information from the service. Although there have been many theoretical solutions to certain aspects of this problem, the results have yet to be adapted to real systems. We report our experience of integrating the ATIR service with Taverna, a popular workflow system used amongst the UK e-Science/Grid computing community to support secure information retrieval in the biology context. Performance studies show that the overhead of ATIR server-side processing is trivial (< 5%) in comparison with the total processing time of the integrated Taverna. Our experimental results also show that the major processing overhead is caused by the Taverna enactor operations which consume no less than 50% of the total processing time.

Standards-based quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middletvare is increasingly being used as a platform,for developing distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that execute in open environments where operational conditions, input workload, and resource availability cannot be characterized accurately a priori. Although QoS-enabled component middleware offers many desirable features, until recently it lacked the ability to efficiently allocate resources and configure platform-specific QoS settings based on utilization of system resources and application QoS. Moreover, it has also lacked the ability to monitor and enforce application QoS requirements. this paper presents two contributions to research on adaptive resource management for component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the structure and functionality of the Resource Allocation and Control Engine (RACE), which is an open-source adaptive resource management framework built atop standards-based QoS-enabled component iniddleware. Second, we demonstrate the effectiveness of RACE in the context of a representative DREsystem: NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-scale Mission system.

this paper provides three contributions to the study of quality of service (QoS) configuration in component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the challenges associated with mapping the platform-independent QoS policies of an application into platform-dependent values of QoS parameters used to configure the behavior of QoS-enabled component middleware. Second, we describe a novel approach that uses model-transformation to map these QoS policies onto component middleware QoS configuration parameters. third, we demonstrate the use of model-checking to verify the properties of the transformation and automate the synthesis of configuration parameters required to tune the QoS-enabled component middleware. Our results indicate that model-transformation and model-checking provide significant benefits with respect to automation, reusability, verifiability, and scalability of the QoS mapping process compared with conventional middleware configuration techniques.
