he importance of using a good metaphor within projects was demonstrated by Kent Beck in his keynote talk at OOPSLA 2002. While the role of metaphors seems to be accepted, the process of finding the right metaphor is a demanding task. Letting the metaphor guide you to a suitable system architecture is even harder. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a good starting point for finding and using a metaphor? We introduce the concept of a metaphor design space. this provides a set of proven design metaphors and combines them with architecture patterns similar to Martin Fowler’s Enterprise Application Architecture (see [3]). the basic concept has evolved over the past ten years while working on metaphor-based object-oriented systems. We illustrate the concept using examples from the Tools & Materials approach (see [9]). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A variety of methodologies in software processes exist nowadays with the agile software development having gained significant ground since the introduction of the agile manifesto in 2001. Scrum is a representative agile development method employed in the software industry. Since trends come and go, it is vital to see where they stand in the real world. In order to gain an insight into how Scrum is viewed nowadays, we have conducted an online study on the current state of the adoption of Scrum. the study targeted in demonstrating where the success or failure success factors of Scrum lie and in viewing Scrum properties in comparison to heavyweight approaches. this paper presents the results of the study that constitute an instructive view into the above aspects of Scrum development.

Various agile methods have several quality assurance mechanisms embedded in the process itself, without any explicit QA role. In principle, the team takes care of quality assurance during sprints and as part of daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and retrospectives. We have defined SafeScrum, a variant of Scrum with some additional XP techniques that can be used to develop safety-critical software and have the software certified according to the IEC 61508 standard. this imposes a load of additional requirements on the process. In a recent industrial case, we have experienced that the quality assurance mechanisms in Scrum becomes insufficient. We have therefore analyzed the standard, consulted an independent assessor and worked with the Scrum team to identify necessary additional tasks for a team-internal QA role to be added to the SafeScrum process. © the Author(s) 2016.

In his recent book "Test-Driven Development" [1], Kent Beck describes briefly the concept of "Acceptance-Test Driven Development", and is broadly sceptical to whether it will work. After a successful project that used this technique, we wish to argue in favour of it and the TextTest [7] tool that we have built up around it. We have found that a working XP process can be built based around using only automated acceptance tests, and not doing any unit testing. In this paper we explain and analyse our XP process, its strengths and limitations, and by doing so we hope to inspire others to try and make it work for their projects too. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In recent years the increasing of open source solutions extended the business opportunities for the IT companies but at the same time created problems for the choice and evaluation processes. For these reasons the need of approaches and tools to address this issue has become capital. We present FAME (Filter, Analyze, Measure and Evaluate), an iterative approach for open source software assessment, and an idea for a support tool for this methodology. In this paper we analyze the most interesting and important assessment methodologies and the FAME approach that derived by these, more heavyweight, proven approaches developed in a University research and consulting company environment, aims to match the needs of small organizations. the proposed approach has been used by FlossLab, the first spin-off of University of Cagliari, to select the best solutions. this tool can be useful to make easier the whole process, supporting the users in this choice by an interactive approach, particularly in the filtering and analysis phases.

agile software development describes those software systems which undergo rapid changes as a result of the testing and requirements fulfillment processes. this development technique came into view in order to overcome the drawbacks of long software life cycles of traditional development methods. this paper investigates the effects of agile practices on the quality of the produced software systems. We have used 20 open and closed source systems of various sizes and functionalities. While the development process of 9 of the studied systems followed agile approaches, the rest were developed using traditional approaches. Firstly, a set of software metrics is generated to describe each system. the metrics encompass complexity and inheritance characteristics of the studied systems. Secondly, the generated metrics are used as predictors of the type of the followed development process using binary logistic regression. the obtained high goodness-of-fit measures show the strong relationship between the used metrics and the type of the followed development process. More specifically, the study reveals that following agile practices has a great impact on lack of cohesion of methods, fan in and maximum depth of inheritance tree.

agile software development has a good track record, but only when the project size is limited. Requirement engineering (RE) is critical because “Requirements” play a critical role at each stage of the lifecycle of software. agile supports changing customer requirements while adding value to the business, it also comes with its own set of obstacles, many of which are connected to requirement constraints. this study seeks to uncover the issues that agile project requirements engineers confront. Many research studies on requirement issues have been undertaken, all of which are compromised in some way, offer no suggestions for improving the agile development process, and fail to reveal massive agile development hurdles. this paper addresses all the issues raised above and suggests possible solutions from the standpoint of requirement engineering and results can be extremely beneficial to the software business in terms of improving development processes, as well as individuals who would like to continue working in this area.

Information systems supporting flexible business in small-to-medium enterprises must be easily modifiable under the supervision of their users. the users (business people) must take active part in agile system development and maintenance. the systems must be able to integrate large legacy systems and to communicate with the systems of independent business partners. Business processes need not be executed by a single ERR We discuss a variant of SOA able to meet these requirements. the discussed SOA uses communication protocols based on problem-oriented languages. We propose a concept of organizational (architectural) services generalizing the concept of connectors and routers. the power and usefulness of the proposal is demonstrated on the examples of service composition, business-oriented interfaces, agile business processes, portals, and gateways. the proposal is based on experience from practical SOA projects.

Code generation tools are known to be highly effective for developing an object-oriented system, as these systems require developers to design the system early in the development. With the increased adoption of agile methods for developing and managing software processes, many software industries have been using tools such as Jira and agilean for project planning, monitoring, release management, retrospective analysis, and activity evaluation. the advantages of utilizing these tools are building a channel for communication, organizing and prioritizing work, visibility, flexibility, and transparency. However, these tools don't provide guidance in early stages of development. this paper introduces a tool that injects a new developer-centric artifact called developer story. Developer stories are short, structural descriptions of a system blueprint. the tool directs agile developers in creating the detailed design of a system early in the development stage, after which it generates the source code supporting the Design by Contract approach. the essence of a developer-centric tool is to focus on what the developer needs to implement. We evaluate the tool by developing a small-scale application and demonstrating how the Design by Contract approach is applied.

software engineering practices known as DevOps seek to integrate software development (Dev) and software operation (Ops). the purpose of this study was to focus on how the DevOps methodologies are to shorten the life cycle of development and provide consistent production of high-quality software. software developers and IT operations specialists are encouraged to work together, communicate, and integrate using the DevOps methodology. Organizations can provide apps and services more rapidly and dependably using this method. agile software development, which aims to reduce development cycles and give clients more regular updates, benefits greatly from DevOps, application deployment using the DevOps methodology. Applications are made, run, and maintained in a quality way at all stages. the tooling being used building, testing, and deploying processes will move to the cloud as more firms adopt DevOps, essentially turning continuous delivery into a regulated remote server. An innovative model in business applications is DevOps-as-a-Service. Using scalable digital developer tools, DevOps-as-a-Service shifts the typical interaction between the production and operational teams to the cloud. the organizational structure must undergo a significant change in order to transition from a traditional mindset to an agile mindset. Adopting such a culture involves a range of strategies and levels of involvement. In this study, we discuss adoption concepts, adoption tactics, and their effects.
