Preserving diversity and inclusion is becoming a compelling need in both industry and academia. the ability to use appropriate forms of writing, speaking, and gestures is not widespread even in formal communications such as public calls, public announcements, official reports, and legal documents. the improper use of linguistic expressions can foment unacceptable forms of exclusion, stereotypes as well as forms of verbal violence against minorities, including women. Furthermore, existing machine translation tools are not designed to generate inclusive content. the present paper investigates a joint effort of the research communities of linguistics and Deep Learning Natural Language Understanding in fighting against non-inclusive, prejudiced language forms. It presents a methodology aimed at tackling the improper use of language in formal communication, with a particular attention paid to Romanic languages (Italian, in particular). State-of-the-art Deep Language Modeling architectures are exploited to automatically identify non-inclusive text snippets, suggest alternative forms, and produce inclusive text rephrasing. A preliminary evaluation conducted on a benchmark dataset shows promising results, i.e., 85% accuracy in predicting inclusive/non-inclusive communications.

With the surge in digital content in low-resource languages, there is an escalating demand for advanced Natural Language processing (NLP) techniques tailored to these languages. BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), serving as the foundational framework for numerous NLP architectures and language models, is increasingly employed for the development of low-resource NLP models. Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) is a method for fine tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) and reducing the training parameters to some extent to decrease the computational costs needed for training the model and achieve results comparable to a fully fine-tuned model. In this work, we present a study of PEFT methods for the Indic low-resource language Marathi. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of PEFT methods applied to various monolingual and multilingual Marathi BERT models. these approaches are evaluated on prominent text classification datasets like MahaSent, MahaHate, and MahaNews. the incorporation of PEFT techniques is demonstrated to significantly expedite the training speed of the models, addressing a critical aspect of model development and deployment. In this study, we explore Low-Rank Adaptation of Large Language Models (LoRA) and adapter methods for low-resource text classification. We show that these methods are competitive with full fine-tuning and can be used without loss in accuracy. this study contributes valuable insights into the effectiveness of Marathi BERT models, offering a foundation for the continued advancement of NLP capabilities in Marathi and similar Indic languages.

Loss sensitivity in electricity systems refers to the responsiveness of power losses in electrical transmission and distribution networks to various influencing factors. this concept is critical for optimizing the efficiency and reliability of power delivery from generation sources to end consumers. Especially in the electricity market trading process, network losses, although only a small part of the total cost, have a significant impact on each specific transaction and grid user. therefore, in-depth understanding and analysis of the impact of generation transactions on the grid network loss can provide a basis for the power purchase plan for the grid to provide reference for the grid network loss management, which is of great significance. the current mainstream calculation and analysis method for network loss sensitivity is the marginal loss coefficient method, which determines the network loss share of each bus by analyzing the impact of bus injected power on the total network loss changes, but the nature of its serial calculation cannot properly solve the balance between real-time analysis of network loss optimization and accuracy, and with the increase in system size, this problem has gradually become a major obstacle to the realization of real- time analysis. this paper presents a novel parallel computing method based on graph computing for determining the sensitivity of system network loss and node-injected power. Graph computing is a parallel computing method that stores, computes, and analyzes the information in a system by constructing a topological graph model and based on it. the method alleviates the computational burden associated with calculating network loss sensitivity as the scale of the power system expands by leveraging the parallel computing capabilities of graph databases. Furthermore, it facilitates the graphical calculation and analysis of network loss sensitivity through the utilization of graph storage.

We demonstrate a new idea of a parallel GPU JSON parser, which is able to optimize the parsing and initial transformation process through metaprogramming. It outperforms other well-known solutions like simdjson, Pandas, as well as cuDF– which also works on GPU. the resulting data is ready to be further processed in common data frame formats and may be incorporated by RAPIDS, Apache Arrow or Pandas. Our parser can therefore be a part of an industrial Extract-Transform-Load workflow.

Cloud-native microservice applications use different communication paradigms to network microservices, including both synchronous and asynchronous I/O for exchanging data. Existing solutions depend on kernel-based networking, incurring significant overheads. the interdependence between microservices for these applications involves considerable communication, including contention between multiple concurrent flows or user sessions. In this paper, we design X-IO, a high-performance unified I/O interface that is built on top of shared memory processing with lock-free producer/consumer rings, eliminating kernel networking overheads and contention. X-IO offers a feature-rich interface. X-IO’s zero-copy interface supports building provides truly zero-copy data transfers between microservices, achieving high performance. X-IO also provides a POSIX-like socket interface using HTTP/REST API to achieve seamless porting of microservices to X-IO, without any change to the application code. X-IO supports concurrent connections for microservices that require distinct user sessions operating in parallel. Our preliminary experimental results show that X-IO’s zero-copy interfaces achieve 2.8x-4.1x performance improvement compared to kernel-based interfaces. Its socket interfaces outperform kernel TCP sockets and achieve performance close to UNIX-domain sockets. the HTTP/REST APIs in X-IO perform 1.4 x-2.3 x better than kernel-based alternatives with concurrent connections.

Due to their fine-grained operations and low conflict rates, graph processing algorithms expose a large amount of parallelism that has been extensively exploited by various parallelization frameworks. Transactional Memory (TM) is a programming model that uses an optimistic concurrency control mechanism to improve the performance of irregular applications, making it a perfect candidate to extract parallelism from graph-based programs. Although fast Hardware TM (HTM) instructions are now available in the ISA extensions of some major processor architectures (e.g., Intel and ARM), balancing the usage of Software TM (STM) and HTM to compensate for capacity and conflict aborts is still a challenging task. this paper presents a Phased TM implementation for graph applications, called Graph-Oriented Transactional Memory (GoTM). It uses a three-state (HTM, STM, GLOCK) concurrency control automaton that leverages both HTM and STM implementations to speed-up graph applications. Experimental results using seven well-known graph programs and real-life workloads show that GoTM can outperform other Phased TM systems and lock-based concurrency mechanisms such as the one present in Galois, a state-of-the-art framework for graph computations.

A radar warning receiver (RWR) can detect and process radar signals to alarm radar threats in battlefields, and it has become an important sensor in the modern warfare. the multi-task RWR can improve the multi-signal processing capability and warning space, by adding processing hardware. As the amount of hardware increases, the reliability of whole system decreases. Multi-task RWR needs to conduct build-in-test before operation, to check the warning capability and locate the failed hardware. the traditional build-in-test schemes can test each sub-system of a single task independently with an external self-checking signal source. In this paper, we propose a novel build-in-test method for the multi-task RWR based on a parallel radio frequency (RF) network. the RF network makes the hardware of each sub-system as a backup for each other during the build-in-test. By utilizing the redundancy of parallel sub-systems, the joint build-in-test of the multi-task RWR can improve the accuracy without any additional RF signal detector. © 2021, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cloud resources are more often used for large scale computing and data processing. However, the usage of the cloud is different than traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems and both algorithms and codes have to be adjusted. this work is often time-consuming and performance is not guaranteed. To address this problem we have developed the PCJ library (parallel Computing in Java), a novel tool for scalable high-performance computing and big data processing in Java. In this paper, we present a performance evaluation of parallel applications implemented in Java using the PCJ library. the performance evaluation is based on the examples of highly scalable applications that run on the traditional HPC system and Amazon AWS Cloud. For the cloud, we have used Intel x86 and ARM processors running Java codes without changing any line of the program code and without the need for time-consuming recompilation. Presented applications have been parallelized using the PGAS programming model and its realization in the PCJ library. Our results prove that the PCJ library, due to its performance and ability to create simple portable code, has great promise to be successful for the parallelization of various applications and run them on the cloud with a similar performance as for HPC systems.

Numerous architectures for medium-voltage power electronic systems are investigated. To find out the architectures suitable for the medium-voltage photovoltaic power electronic systems, this paper gives a systematic study on medium-voltage power electronic systems (MVPESs) architectures for large-scale PV plants. A synthesis method of MVPESs is firstly introduced. It is composed of two steps. First, the power conversion chains are synthesized by traversing all possible designs of the multi-stage converters. Based on the power conversion chains, topologies are obtained by cascade connection or parallel connection. A data structure representing the MVPESs is also introduced that can help to synthesize the MVPESs using computer. the advantages and disadvantages of these MVPESs are also discussed. Two typical MVPES architectures are compared with efficiency and cost.
