Many parallel applications do not scale as the number of threads increases, which means that executing them with the maximum possible number of threads will not always deliver the best outcome in performance, energy consumption, or the tradeoff between both (represented by the energy-delay product - EDP). Given that, several strategies, online and offfine, have already been proposed to rightly tune the number of threads according to the application. While the former can capture some behaviors that can only be known at runtime, the latter do not impose any execution overhead and can use more efficient and costly algorithms. However, these learning algorithms in static strategics may take several hours, precluding their use or a smooth migration across different systems. In this scenario, we propose a generic methodology for such offline strategies to significantly decrease the learning time by inferring the execution behavior of parallel applications using smaller input sets than the ones used by the target applications. through the execution of eighteen well-known benchmarks on two multicore processors, we show that our methodology is capable of converging to results that are very close to those that use the regular input set, but converging 84.7% faster, on average. We also show that such a strategy delivers better results than a dynamic one, presenting an EDP 7.7% lower, on average, when executing the applications with the number of threads found during learning. Finally, we also compare our learning methodology with an exhaustive search. It has an average learning cost (i.e., the time spent by our search algorithm to find the best configuration) of only 3.1% to optimize the EDP of the entire benchmark sett.

A large volume of data is being produced by agrometeorological stations, satellites, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), agricultural machines, among other equipment's, all used for agricultural management in food production. Related to that, actually, there are demands for the organization of new computational techniques for agricultural risk management. therefore, the data volume is immense, and there are challenges to execute them based on both conventional algorithms and architectures. this paper presents the organization of a new parallel model based on semantics and the Apache Spark framework for agricultural risk management related to soil quality. Based in such concept, a parallel algorithm is proposed to distribute tomographic images of soil to several nodes, as well as, to ask them for not only pore recognition, but also for soil density and soil compaction measurements from those images. Besides, the developed parallel algorithm allowed to obtain a better performance gains and reduction of the time required to generate maps for agricultural soil quality, i.e., to support decision making in such field of interest.

Stencil codes are valuable methods to solve partial differential equations of models in a wide range of applications in science and engineering. Graphics processing units (GPUs) provide a highly parallel architecture with fast directly accessible memory that is desirable to run stencil codes. they enable larger and more complex simulations that are solved faster compared to simulating on CPUs. We provide a solution for users to run highly parallel stencil codes on GPUs, that can also be efficiently used on a distributed GPU *** this work, we present an extension to the multi-disciplinary framework NAStJA originally designed to efficiently run stencil codes on the CPUs in current high-performance computing (HPC) systems, to also be able to run on GPUs. We describe different methods to increase the performance of stencil codes on GPUs like a border exchange method which is transparent to the user, as well as a buffer for gradient values that are needed multiple times. We show their performance using the phase-field method as a stencil code *** this GPU extension and optimizations implemented into the NAStJA framework, we can show highly improved performance compared to the CPU implementation, and an efficiency of 92% (weak scaling) for a large-scale example simulation on 64 GPUs on the ForHLR II HPC system.

In this paper, a comparative study of classifying different hand gestures of two well-known surface Electromyogram (sEMG) data sets, Rami Khusaba EMG repository, and UCI Machine Learning Repository, is shown. Applying transfer learning and CNN-LSTM neural network architectures, we find out a suitable control scheme for a myoelectric prosthetic hand (we mention it as DUFAB Hand). At first, the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is exploited to create images from the sEMG signal, which serves as a powerful feature for the classification of different hand gestures. then, we transferred the learning of various neural nets of image classification, e.g., AlexNet, and ResNet-18 to the sEMG image classification. Application of these deep neural networks outperformed general machine learning techniques with higher accuracy and performance. For example, the combination of CNN and LSTM has achieved the state of the art accuracies for these data sets, of 99.72% for UCI Machine Learning Repository and 99.83% for Rami Khusaba EMG repository respectively. the main contribution of this paper is, establishing an algorithmic pipeline using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and CNN-LSTM deep neural networks to achieve high accuracy in two sEMG datasets.

the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought online education under the spotlight. Universities have resorted to online education practices, including online instruction and learning, to achieve outcomes that are essentially comparable with offline classroom teaching. In this paper, an analysis was conducted to identify the impact of parallel online education on instructors and students, and relevant aspects were discussed. this study was aimed at obtaining a deeper understanding of the nature of online education so as to facilitate its long-term growth. this paper suggests that instructors should consider the particularity of online education when completing their pre-class, in-class and after-class instructional design, with a special focus on enhancing the learning outcomes of students.

Molecular dynamics and many similar time-dependent computing tasks are defined as simple state updates over multiple time steps. In recent years, modern supercomputing clusters have enjoyed fast-growing compute capability and moderate-growing memory bandwidth, but their improvement of network bandwidth/latency is limited. In this paper, we propose a new communication-avoiding algorithmic model based on asynchronous communications which, unlike BSP, records and handles multiple iterative states together. the basic idea is to let computation run in small regular time steps while communications over longer dynamic time steps. Computation keeps checking inaccuracies so that the intervals between communications are small in volatile scenarios but longer when dynamics is smooth. this helps reduce the number of data exchanges via network communication and hence improve the overall performance when communication is the bottleneck. We test MD simulation of condensed covalent materials on the Sunway TaihuLight. For best time-to-solution, the general-purpose supercomputer Sunway TaihuLight performs 11.8K steps/s for a system with 2.1 million silicon atoms and 5.1 K steps/s for 50.4 million silicon atoms. this time-to-solution performance is close to those of state-of-art hardware solution. A software solution using general-purpose supercomputers makes the technology more accessible to the general scientific users.

this paper, inspired by a real production process of steel hardening, investigates a scheduling problem to minimize the idle energy consumption of machines. the energy minimization is achieved by switching a machine to some power-saving mode when it is idle. For the steel hardening process, the mode of the machine (i.e., furnace) can be associated with its inner temperature. Contrary to the recent methods, which consider only a small number of machine modes, the temperature in the furnace can be changed continuously, and so an infinite number of the power-saving modes must be considered to achieve the highest possible savings. To model the machine modes efficiently, we use the concept of the energy function, which was originally introduced in the domain of embedded systems but has yet to take roots in the domain of production research. the energy function is illustrated with several application examples from the literature. Afterward, it is integrated into a mathematical model of a scheduling problem with parallel identical machines and jobs characterized by release times, deadlines, and processing times. Numerical experiments show that the proposed model outperforms a reference model adapted from the literature.

Image processing promotes many of the technological advancements these days. the main aspect while performing image processing operations is the time taken to deal with the application of different routines on these images. thus, time is an important criterion for the efficiency of the systems. With the given situation, the idea of giving images to the processors and then depending upon code all the cores will be either dealing with one image and performing operations on the image or distributing the images to each core to perform the operations. this uses the idea of parallel Programming i.e. the use of all computer resources that are cores here. the paper focuses on implementing different image-enhancing techniques integrated into a system that will execute it on single as well as multiple cores. the image processing operations implemented sequentially as well as parallelly in this paper are Image Blurring, Edge Detection, Contrast Stretching, and Image Negation the average speed for all the operations obtained when executed on multiple cores are 9.94, 9.54, 11.12, and 11.21 respectively. © 2020 IEEE.
