Parameterization of 3D mesh plays an important role in computer graphics application society, such as geometry compression, texture mapping, morphing and so on. As far as closed two-manifold genus-0 meshes are concerned, natural choice of parameterization domain is sphere, and the basic challenges are no-foldover and low-distortion respectively. To solve the spherical parameterization problem, we present spherical-domain hybrid stretch metric (SHSM), the concept of global area is introduced into SHSM to further reduce the area distortion of parameterized triangles. We demonstrate the ability of our method to both parameterize fast and avoid high distortion, realizing parameterization from the spatial genus-0 meshes onto the unit sphere. © 2005 IEEE.

We present a multi-resolution mesh model of the ocean surface based on a straightforward terrain LOD scheme, Tiled Quad-tree, with that the region of ocean surface can be extended limitlessly and readily adapted for GPU acceleration. We have introduced the concept of Wrapped Fractal Surface (WFS) for generating height field map of the ocean. through WFS self-mapping, we can create a series of WFS and obtain the height field map at discrete times without repeating tiles. By interpolating the height map at regular intervals we can build an ocean surface continuously and dynamically. this paper also studied shallow ocean waves concerned about affects of seaboard and underwater terrain. Experimental results showed that our approach was effective and would satisfy the requirements of a realistic real-time navigation for large-scale seascape.

In this paper, we propose a new triangular finite element mesh generation method based on simplification of high-density mesh and adaptive Level-of-Detail (LOD) methods for efficient CAE. Mesh simplification evaluating mesh properties is applied to control the mesh properties required for FE mesh, such as the number of triangular elements, element shape quality and size while keeping the specified approximation tolerance. Adaptive LOD methods based on vertex hierarchy according to curvature and region of interest, and global LOD method preserving density distributions are also proposed in order to construct a more appropriate FE mesh. these methods enable efficient generation of FE meshes with appropriate properties for analysis from a high-density mesh. Finally, the effectiveness of our approach is shown through evaluations of the FE meshes for practical use.

In the recent years graphics Processing Units (GPU) have evolved into general purpose programmable streaming parallel processors. this evolution makes it possible to implement high quality photo realistic rendering techniques on graphics processors. there has been a few studies to show how to map ray tracing to the GPU Since graphics processors are not designed to process complex data structures, it is crucial to explore data structures and algorithms for efficient stream processing. In particular ray traversal is one of the most time consuming parts of ray tracing methods. In this work we focus on the efficient ray traversals on GPU. In this paper, we describe the development of automatic drafting functions for men's and women's pants, which have three new features for educational purposes: (1) Step mode for explaining the drafting order;(2) guidance for displaying drafting details and usage procedures;and (3) mechanism for displaying class references. the slopers are well-adapted to many different sizes since their dimensions are determined with reference to 1D and 3D body measurements of 28 third-year university students. We have made experimental use of the slopers for beginner level students (straight pants), intermediate level students (wide pants) and advanced level students (originally-designed pants). the feasibility and effectiveness of these newly developed automatic drafting functions have been proven on the basis of drafting results and evaluations submitted by the beginner level and intermediate level students, and drafting results, fitting and corrections by the advanced level students.

this correspondence addresses the problem of rotation, scale, and translation invariant recognition of images. Object shape comparability is a challenging problem in the field of pattern recognition and computer vision. the method based on the geometric moment invariants is the typical method in these applications. this paper introduces curve structure moment invariants based on the geometric moment invariants from transforming the density in geometric moments into a new density. the difference in the shapes is increased by using the curve structure moment invariants. therefore, this method can be used in object shape analysis. To support our new theory, an algorithm for object shape analysis is designed and experiments based on square transform are conducted. Experiments give an encouraging high recognition rate by using the curve structure moment invariants. © 2005 IEEE.

One significant problem in tile-based texture synthesis is the selection of sample patches. the reason is that the tiling process may produce results with poor quality when the sample patches used to fill the tiles can not find good cutting pathes at the merging stage. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithm to find the best group of sample patches from a considerable number of patch groups. Using tile set gene rated by these optimal sample patches can significantly improve the result quality of the tile-based texture synthesis. © 2005 IEEE.

this paper proposes a fast approach to generate length-preserved natural boundary for intrinsic parameterization. Given a triangular mesh with disk-like topology, we compute an optimal boundary for its parameterization. An optimal boundary is expected to be length-preserved with the length of every triangular edge on the boundary is invariant before and after parameterization;also, the boundary is requested to be natural where the inner angle is close to the angle excess at every boundary vertex on the given mesh. Computation of a length-preserved natural boundary is formulated as a constrained non-linear optimization problem, the procedure of solving which is in general very time-consuming. Here, we speed tip the optimization by adopting the scheme of sequential linearly constrained programming. It is shown at the end of this paper that our length-preserved natural boundary could greatly improve the speed and quality of the original intrinsic parameterization.

A new scheme for 3D reconstruction of implicit surfaces from large scattered point sets based on the radial basis functions (RBFs) is proposed in this paper. the partition of unity (POU) method and a binary tree is used to organize the point sets into some overlapping local subdomains and reconstructing a local surface for each of the subdomains from non-disjunct subsets of the points, we use only a single point at the offset of the surface to avoid the trivial solution of RBF linear system. When the offset point is chosen properly, the technique is not only efficient but also robust, offering a higher level of scalability. the global solution can be obtained by combining the local solutions with POU equations. We also adapt the methodology of level set propagation of a dynamic surface and employ it for smoothing the reconstructed surfaces. We develop versatile computational framework with many benefits in topological flexibility and numerical efficiency. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, the work/low to reverse engineer the bamboo-paper-binding frame of the Chinese folk handicraft - southern style lion head will be described. the problems encountered during the reverse engineering process are summarized.
