In the traditional paradigm for computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, tool paths are programmed offline from the CNC machine using the computer-aideddesign (cad) model of the workpiece. the program is downloaded to the CNC controller and the part is then machined. Since a cad model does not exist inside the CNC controller, it is unaware of the part to be machined and cannot predict or prevent errors. Not only is this paradigm labor intensive, it can lead to catastrophic damage if there are errors during machining. this paper presents a new concept for CNC machine control whereby a cad model of the workpiece exists inside the controller and the tool positions are generated in real-time by the controller using the computer's graphics hardware without human intervention. the new concept was implemented on an experimental lathe machine specifically designed to machine complicated ornamental wood workpieces with a personal computer. An example workpiece was machined and measured using a 3D camera. the measured data was registered to the cad model to evaluate machining accuracy.

Exchange of procedural cad models between heterogeneous cad systems is still a challenging issue in cad area. Previously we proposed an approach for effectively constructing synchronized collaborative design environment based on heterogeneous cad systems. In this paper, we extend the synchronized collaborative design environment that we have developed to a web services based platform for exchange of procedural cad models between heterogeneous cad systems. First, the real-time exchange of a single operation is extended to the exchange of the complete procedural cad model between heterogeneous cad systems. Furthermore, web services technology is adopted to encapsulate the procedural cad model exchange functions, which are then released on the Internet as a standard interface and can be used by remote developers in their windows applications, web applications, and so on. Finally, a web service for exchange of procedural cad models between SolidWorks and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop is realized.

Virtual assembly and tolerance analysis are effective tools to avoid assembly conflicts between components designed by different cad teams during collaborative product design. this paper develops a virtual assembly and tolerance analysis system supporting collaborative product design and puts forward a component model expression method based on assembly ports as well as giving approaches to interactive assembly and tolerance analysis in virtual environment, which include recognition of assembly relation based on assembly ports, partial disassembly in assembly procedure, assembly movement navigation, recording of assembly procedure and tolerance information visualization. Access control is one of the key steps to ensuring the availability, confidentiality and integrity of system resources. While it has been fully applied in various network systems, it's still relatively new for collaborative cad. this paper provides a new framework of multi-level access control for collaborative cad based on Hierarchical Product Modeling. A Layered Privilege Model (LPM) has been developed to provide multi-granularity access permissions in the part level and feature level. An Extended Hierarchy Role-Based Access Control (EHRBAC) is implemented, integrated with LPM and common Hierarchy RBAC, to provide hierarchical access control of collaborative feature modeling in the component/part level and design feature level. Mesh simplification techniques are used to create variable level-of-detail for individual features.

Being able to automatically segment 3D models into meaningful parts is an important goal in 3D shape processing. In this paper, we are proposing a fast and easy-to-implement 3D segmentation approach, which is based on spectral clustering. For this purpose, we define an improved formulation of the similarity matrix which allows our algorithm to segment both free-form and cad (computeraideddesign) 3D models. In 3D space, different shapes, such as planes and cylinders, have different surface normal distributions. We defined the similarity of vertices based on their normals which can segment a 3D model into its geometric features. Results show the effectiveness and robustness of our method in segmenting a wide range of 3D models. Even in the case of complex models, our method results in meaningful segmentations. We tested our segmentation approach on real data segmentation, in the presence of noise and also in comparison with other methods which provided good results in all cases.
