Playing has important psychosocial and emotional benefits for older adults. the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the interest in incorporating digital interactions and virtual reality (VR) technologies into healthcare strategies that target older adults. In this phenomenological study, we share our experience of bringing playful and creative gaming and VR technologies to community-dwelling older adults. With funding from Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC), we created a storefront engAGE living lab (ELL) in a shopping mall in a suburb of Montreal (Quebec, Canada) with a high concentration of older population. In this study we tried to repeat a previous study "finding better games for older adults" that was conducted in a university-based research centre for healthy ageing (PERFORM Centre, Concordia University). In this study, based on experience of three research assistants who ran the study between July-Dec 2022, we evaluated strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats (SWOT) of conducting this research in ELL. We found that passive recruitment of older adults into such studies was challenging. To establish trust and long-term relationships between researchers and participants was an important factor in retaining participants in the study, but it created transactional situations where some participants’ motivations were not related to tested technologies, but to socializing with researchers. this work provides insights into the challenges and opportunities of conducting research in public settings. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Time perception which plays an important role in daily life, is a critical concept affecting a wide range of disciplines. Time perception is crucial in both computer science and cognitive psychology as it informs the design of human-centered systems and technologies, while also deepening our understanding of cognitive processes and individual differences in how humans experience and process time. Cognitive architectures that model human cognitive functions provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying time perception. It is assumed that cognitive architectures are effective in explaining the cognitive processes involved in perceiving and interpreting time. In this study, the data obtained by applying a designed time perception experiment to human participants and a cognitive architecture were classified with machine learning algorithms which are K-Nearest Neighbor, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest. According to the classification results, the Random Forest classifier was the most successful algorithm to classify the Human and Model classes with an accuracy rate of 82.06%.

Several studies in production engineering and operations research focused on disassembly and assembly planning for improving the profitability of remanufacturing. the representation of feasible (dis)assembly sequences by analyzing geometrical and technical precedence constraints is an essential necessity of (dis)assembly planning. An AND/OR graph (AOG) is commonly used to represent a product's feasible (dis)assembly sequences, including alternative subassemblies and parallel operations. In recent years, researchers studied the automatic extraction of geometrical precedence constraints by collision analysis within 3D models. However, since most of the existing approaches focused on collision analysis to identify complex precedence constraints, the generation of AOGs for complex products from collision analysis results remains too inefficient for industrial use cases. In this study, a computer-aided design (CAD) interface from previous studies is used to extract liaison and moving wedge information from 3D models. A top-down and a bottom-up approach for generating complete AOGs from the extracted data are introduced. the approaches' computing performances are analyzed on sample test cases and CAD models. the bottom-up approach performed better for the given samples. It has been found that the amount of moving wedge constraints has a strong effect on computing performance. It is a strong indicator to estimate the complexity of products under examination. the exponential behavior of the needed computing resources can be estimated beforehand. For complex products, graph simplification or alternative graph representations with less information richness should be considered. the results contribute to automated (dis)assembly sequence planning from complex products and, consequently, increasing remanufacturing profitability. © 2022 the Author(s).

Exploring the challenges raised by the brain-computer interface (BCI) multidisciplinary field, this paper provides a real-time LabVIEW application for controlling a six degrees robotic arm using the NI myRIO development board and the NeuroSky Mindwave Mobile portable headset. By detecting and numbering the consecutive, voluntary eye-blinks, the necessary commands accomplished two different approaches of controlling the robotic arm. the proposed solution encompasses a completely functional BCI experimental prototype based on a simple working principle, straightforward control mode, real-time running, friendly graphical user interface, and effective communication between hardware and software-enabled by LabVIEW graphical programming environment. An additional feature of the proposed brain-computer interface system is the mobile robot underlying the robotic arm so that people with neuromotor disabilities can benefit from a versatile assistive biomechatronic device.

the electroencephalogram, a type of non-invasive-based brain signal that has a user intention-related feature using in brain-computer interface (BCI) provides an efficient bidirectional pathway between user and computer. In this work, we proposed a deep learning framework based on the corresponding frequency emphasize method to decode the motor imagery (MI) data from the 2020 international BCI competition dataset. the MI dataset consists of 3-class, namely 'Cylindrical', 'Spherical', and 'Lumbrical'. We utilized power spectral density as an emphasize method and a convolutional neural network to classify the modified MI data. the results showed that the MI-related frequency range was activated during the MI task, and provide neurophysiological evidence to design the proposed method. When using the proposed method, the average classification performance in the intra-session condition was 69.68% and the average classification performance in the inter-session condition was 52.76%. Our results provided the possibility of developing a BCI-based device control system for practical applications.

the idea of using the current technologies to build more sustainable smart cities has gained great popularity. One of attractive fields is Internet of things applications to control vehicle traffic and parking which reduce energy consumption in smart cities. this paper presents an android mobile application system that allows users to check the availability and location of parking spots by using their smartphones. Main tools used for this project are the Arduino UNO and mobile application running with Android. Sensors were used to sense if the spot is empty, and then send that info to the mobile application. As the empty place is discovered to be vacant it is distinguished utilizing ultrasonic sensors which report it further. the system would not help the user to book parking spot but would show the availability of parking spot to reduce the searching time. this Smart Parking System is a basic prototype which can be improved later for real system by connecting the system to a GPS-based application which will direct the user to the spot itself and it can further be improved by using artificial intelligence to highlight different spots to different users.

Pandemic hits the world catastrophically, leading to the disruption on our everyday life including how students learn in the pandemic era. Most of the students nowadays have difficulties preparing the way to face the world of work. this research proposes a serious game design to prepare university students for the world of work by combining the Six Facets of Serious Game design and Adam's Ernest Game design. Six Facets of Serious Game design is the design pattern for serious games (e.g., pedagogical games) [1]. Two systems (i.e. the serious game and the baseline system) were designed, deployed and evaluated to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed serious game design. the serious game design was built on an Android mobile phone. Moreover, a simple simulation that has identical scenarios with the serious game was also built as the baseline in the evaluation process. thirty-seven respondents who will be or have been entering the workplace for their first time participated in the evaluation process. A Wilcoxon rank test was applied to the data as the data does not come from a normal distribution. the results show that the proposed serious game design provides more effective results than the baseline. the user experiences' score provided by the serious game design system is statistically higher than the baseline system. Moreover, the serious game system increases the learners' motivation compared to the baseline system.

Domestic waste, resulting from human daily activities, can pollute the environment if not properly managed. the necessity for human-occupied structures to have wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to process this waste becomes evident. this study adopts an experimental approach, designing conventional WWTPs equipped with waste treatment procedures. through sampling methods and laboratory analysis, this research aims to measure the quality of domestic waste before and after treatment. Results indicate a significant improvement in water quality following the treatment process, meeting the established water quality standards. these findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of domestic waste treatment and offer guidelines for communities to adopt better waste management practices, ensuring environmental protection.

Waste generation is a significant challenge exacerbated by factors such as population growth, industrialization, and urbanization, particularly in densely populated areas like Metro Manila. Consequently, effective waste management becomes increasingly crucial. this study focused on the development of a waste management device designed to address waste generation at its source, specifically targeting the residential sector. the researchers have created a semi-automated kitchen waste composter to facilitate the conversion of kitchen waste into valuable fertilizers, even for individuals with limited composting knowledge. the system incorporates a sensor network that monitors key parameters of the composting process, including temperature and moisture levels. An actuator network ensures that these parameters remain within optimal ranges. Additionally, an image processing algorithm has been implemented to detect compost maturity. By implementing this waste management device, households in urban areas can actively contribute to waste reduction efforts. It empowers individuals to participate in composting without requiring extensive expertise. this technology represents a promising solution to mitigate waste generation and promote sustainable practices in residential settings, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly urban environment.

this paper proposes an intermediate frequency bandpass filter for suppressing out of band harmonics and spurious analog signals, reducing background noise of the signal, and improving the dynamic range of subsequent circuits. this paper applies the Norton transform method to the design of practical filter circuits. the design method of LC bandpass filter was demonstrated through a design example. the center frequency of the filter is 46.42 MHz, and the 1 dB bandwidth is 2.046 MHz. the performance of the filter meets the expected specifications, with an in band insertion loss of 4 dB and an out of band attenuation greater than 40 dB at ± 6 dB. the proposed filter has excellent out of band suppression performance, providing potential prospects for the application of LC bandpass filters in intermediate frequency systems.
