this paper reports on research being conducted under the National Research Council of Canada’s Aging in Place Program. the objective of this program is to evaluate and assist in the adaptation of assistive technologies for older adults living at home. the aims are to produce guidelines and prototypes needed to design safe, usable, and affordable aging in place technology solutions for virtual care. In preparation for this initiative, relevant findings are presented from a scoping review of the literature. Additionally, we present the framework for surveying older adults’ perspectives on their lived experiences with virtual care and digital technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic, which drove uptake of virtual care, particularly in critical areas such as cardiac rehabilitation. Here we discuss the target population for surveillance and describe the survey design, validation, and sampling approach that could achieve the widest range of perspectives;identify gaps, barriers, and challenges. Additionally, we explore remote usability assessment methods available for aging in place technology co-design and evaluation efforts. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) emerges as an exhaustive diagnostic tool in the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and is enormously investigated for automatic and more accurate detections. Artificial intelligence (AI) based radiographic images (Computed Tomography, X-Ray, Lung Ultrasound) interpretation improves the overall diagnosis efficiency of Covid-19 infections. In this paper, CAD based deep meta learning approach has been discussed for automatically quick analysis of chest computed tomography (CT) images regarding the early detection of corona virus (Covid-19) presence inside a subject. We incorporated a self-supervised contrastive-learning neural network for unbiased feature representation and classifications using fine-tuned pre-trained Inception module on 28203 chest CT images. this trainable multi-shot end-to-end deep learning architecture is validated on public dataset of normal and covid-19 CT images obtaining normalized accuracy of 0.9708. Results verify our model to be able enough to assist radiologists and specialists in screening and correct diagnosis of Covid-19 patients in less span of time. © 2022 IEEE.

this research is considered as the transformation of cognitive immersion based on the theory by Liu et al. (2021), to describe the possibilities of immersive learning by distance teaching tools. It provides insights among the importance of distance learning for design education, especially under specific situations such as COVID-19 pandemic. the tools to support distance learning are categorized and discussed, degrees of immersion are compared among formal learning, informal learning and social learning courseware. the methods rely on an extensive secondary research and literature review, aims to transform the theoretical framework of cognitive immersive learning by online-based tools, also provide new thoughts for innovatively teaching design in the future. As the output, we establish a theoretical model based on online tools, also a design framework to help with course design or idea visualization for instructors.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) array antennas that may transmit radio waves in various patterns and polarizations have been increasingly important in current telecommunication systems. However, the mutual coupling effect is the major drawback of the MIMO system. Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) is a good solution for planar arrays to reduce the effects of mutual coupling. A simple EBG structure has been proposed in this paper to reduce the mutual coupling effect for a quad element (2×2) MIMO array. First, a single inset-fed microstrip patch antenna has been designed that resonates at 4.2 GHz with minimum return loss as low as -40 dB. A rectangular shape EBG structure with a dimension of 6 × 13 mm has been implemented between the radiating patches. Each EBG unit cell consists of 3 rectangular shape slots with a dimension of 2×3 mm. the simulation result shows that the antenna can radiate around 95% of its power to the receiver and gives a good directive pattern as well. the quad-element MIMO array with the EBG structure has a minimum return loss of less than -50 dB and maximum isolation of more than 20 dB. therefore, a quad-element MIMO array with the proposed EBG structure can provide better performance in 5G applications. © 2023 IEEE.

Silk cocoon is one of the critical textile raw materials, and its quality has a significant impact on production and processing. In view of the problems such as time-consuming, labor-intensive, and low efficiency in the existing silk cocoon quality inspection methods, this paper proposes a machine vision-based silk cocoon quality inspection system. For different types of silk cocoons, multiple machine vision techniques are used for image processing and feature extraction. the quality characteristics of silk cocoons are discriminated and analyzed by machine learning algorithms to achieve automatic detection of the cocoon quality. Experimental results show that the proposed system has high accuracy and fast detection speed and can meet the requirements of automated detection in the silk cocoon production process. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper reports on our progress in the development of a virtual reality (VR) training environment where novice first responders in remote areas are acquiring situational awareness and procedural knowledge for the management of dangerous goods transportation incidents. Our research and development efforts aim to address the problem of providing engaging, realistic, safe, and cost-effective means to train first responders. the adopted process includes conducting requirements analysis in partnership with key stakeholders, as well as the design, development and empirical evaluation of the VR system with sufficient autonomy to support multiple use cases, realistic scenario variations, and real-time feedback during scenario execution.

the use of chatbots has expanded significantly in recent years, impacting various fields such as marketing, support systems, education, healthcare, cultural heritage, and entertainment. this presentation explores the growing global interest in chatbots and the factors driving their adoption across these diverse sectors. We examine how societal stereotypes shape chatbot design and discuss the core technologies that underpin these systems. Additionally, we categorize chatbots based on their specialized functions and the needs they meet, and we outline the principles behind modern chatbot design along with key development platforms. the advancement of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has been crucial in enhancing chatbot capabilities, enabling more natural and human-like interactions. Voice-activated chatbots like Siri and Alexa showcase how NLP can improve user engagement through conversational interfaces. Recent progress in machine learning has further boosted the accuracy and effectiveness of NLP, making chatbots a valuable tool for various applications. Our discussion highlights the exciting prospects of NLP-powered chatbots in personalized learning and advocates for continued research to unlock their full potential. We also review rule-based training approaches, such as using Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML), which enable chatbots to operate based on predefined response patterns. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, data privacy security has been widely and highly valued by countries around the world. In the context of European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the regulatory requirements of laws and regulations are becoming increasingly strict, bringing huge impacts and challenges to enterprises with user's personal data such as internet services and financial technology. Up to a point, federal learning ensures data privacy by storing and processing personal data locally. However, due to malicious clients or central servers being able to launch attacks on global models or user privacy data, the security of federated learning is questioned, introducing blockchain into the federated learning framework is a feasible solution to address these data security issues. In this work, the concept of Blockchain (BC), Federated Learning (FL), GDPR and other similar data protection laws are presented, where a Blockchain-empowered Federated Learning (BC-empowered FL) framework is introduced. the challenges on complying with the GDPR are described, and the solutions or principles for improving the GDPR-compliance of BC-empowered FL systems are analyzed, sorting out the differences and connections among the GDPR-compliance methods yet laying a foundation to design legal and compliant applications for different domains and scenarios which need touch upon the user's personal data. © 2023 IEEE.
