Connected Components Labeling (CCL) is a technique to detect different objects in an image by assigning each object a unique label. CCL has been widely used in many applications. For example, in computer-aided Diagnosis (CADx), CCL is a vital preprocessing step in detecting pulmonary nodules in lung computed tomography (CT) images, and discovering masses in mammographic images. Over the past decades, a number of CCL algorithms have been proposed in literature. In this paper, these CCL algorithms are classified into contour tracing CCL algorithms and raster scan CCL algorithms according to their scanning order. this paper serves as a survey to review the major CCL algorithms in each category and explore the future direction in this research field.

We present LUDIK, a serious game project for pediatric haemato-oncological patients, including 5 differently scoped mini-games, designed to produce interpretable game score data. A playable game client and the overall system approach were evaluated by children of the target age group through a survey. Our results indicate clear acceptance of the general approach and system design. the presented mini-games were evaluated separately regarding fun and usability. Except for one mini-game, the results are indicating high acceptance and engagement, and very good usability for the age group in question. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, primary focus is the computation of grounding parameters essential for both regular and irregular grounding grid designs. the key grounding parameters under examination encompass ground resistance, surface voltage, touch voltage, and step voltage. To fulfill this objective, a specialized software tool is introduced, consisting of a computer program. this software is underpinned by mathematical models specifically engineered to facilitate the precise determination of grounding parameters tailored to varying soil structures. Our approach entails a rigorous comparative analysis, wherein the outcomes generated by our methodology are compared with existing methods documented in the literature. © 2023 IEEE.

Secondary school physical education (PE) teachers are continuously challenged to find ways to support students learning and motivate them for an active and healthy lifestyle. To address this complexity, continuing teacher professional development (TPD) is key. Technological tools can facilitate the effective delivery of TPD in this context. Successful implementation of this technology, however, is not self-evident. Based on the general aim of effectively integrating technologies in the educational process and focusing on the needs of educators, this study examines how the evidence-based theoretical TARGET framework for creating a motivating PE learning climate might be embedded into a digital professional development tool for PE teachers, useful in everyday practice. It presents a case study in which a multidisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and end-users iteratively went through several phases of need identification, idea generation, designing, development, and testing. By using a participatory approach, we were able to collect contextualized data and gain insights into users' preferences, requirements, and ideas for designing and engaging with the tool. Based on these insights the TPD TARGET-tool for PE teachers was ultimately developed. the most prominent characteristics of this tool are (1) the combination of an evaluative function with teaching strategy support, (2) the strong emphasis on ease of use due to the complex PE teaching context, (3) the avoidance of social comparison, and suggestions of normative judgment, and (4) the allowance for a high level of customization and teacher autonomy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Digital tourism village potentially accelerates rural development hence improving a country's economy. the Indonesian government has developed hundreds of tourism villages in recent years but has yet to popularize the development of digital villages. Technology design and development are pivotal factors in tourism villages' digitalization. therefore, the development digital tourism village must consider village readiness by measuring technology adoption readiness or technology acceptance of the corresponding stakeholders. this paper presents the technology acceptance analysis in the context of a digital tourism village. We use a quantitative analysis approach using the TAM-UTAUT model with data collected from a questionnaire of 101 villagers (n=101) in Pasanggrahan Village, West Java, Indonesia. this research uses machine learning with clustering procedures to analyze the level of technology adoption readiness by implementing K-means Clustering algorithm. In addition, to observe the significance of each influencing factor to the technology adoption readiness level, feature importance analysis approach using Extra tree classifier algorithm is employed. the research finds that attitude toward use, perceived ease of use, and facilitating condition-have a considerable impact on the degree of readiness for technology adoption. On the other hand, the perceived utility and social impact are found to have minimal bearing on the preparedness level for technology adoption. Perceived ease of use and facilitating conditions are the most important factors to afford the acceleration of technology adoption readiness. the research contributes to the development of a digital tourism village and the analysis of technology adoption readiness using machine learning. © 2024 IEEE.

the frequent occurrence of accidents while driving is caused by several factors, such as technical factors and human error factors. the human error factor often occurs in vehicle accidents, and it is because the driver is tired when driving, causing drowsiness. the state of drowsiness will change the position of the head. So this study designed the accelerometer as a head movement detection to detect a sleepy driver. the accelerometer can detect sleepiness in the driver. the z-axis value on the accelerometer can measure the position of the driver's head as an indicator of when the driver starts to feel sleepy. the accelerometer sensor can also work well when used in the driving position of a car that moves either on flat or bumpy roads. Measurements from the sensor can be used as a reference to provide an early warning to the driver when he is in a sleepy state by using a buzzer. the test results show that the accelerometer sensor value below 8500 indicates that the head position has started to fall downwards or upwards, which is used as a reference as the driver is sleepy. therefore, the design of a head movement detection system as a driver's sleep detection tool can reduce the rate of vehicle accidents because it can send a signal to the driver quickly when the driver is getting sleepy. © 2022 IEEE.

this paper investigates the planning and control problems for multi-robot systems under linear temporal logic (LTL) specifications. In contrast to most of existing literature, which presumes a static and known environment, our study focuses on dynamic environments that can have unknown moving obstacles like humans walking through. Depending on whether local communication is allowed between robots, we consider two different online re-planning approaches. When local communication is allowed, we propose a local trajectory generation algorithm for each robot to resolve conflicts that are detected on-line. In the other case, i.e., no communication is allowed, we develop a model predictive controller to reactively avoid potential collisions. In both cases, task satisfaction is guaranteed whenever it is feasible. In addition, we consider the human-in-the-Ioop scenario where humans may additionally take control of one or multiple robots. We design a mixed initiative controller for each robot to prevent unsafe human behaviors while guarantee the LTL satisfaction. Using our previous developed ROS software package, several experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and the applicability of the proposed strategies. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper discusses and evaluates a self-contained portable multi-user cross-platform Virtual Reality (VR) setup that was devised and configured using off the shelf technologies and devices. this paper exemplifies how some fundamental challenges like those faced in Malawi in relation to technology use, can be addressed, to allow for the use of VR technology as a potential solution to improving the quality of secondary school education in situations where the challenges in question are faced. this paper explains how the proposed VR setup was evaluated, where the results of that evaluation indicate that the proposed portable multi-user cross-platform VR setup is viable and can potentially be used for secondary school teaching. this is a follow-up to previous work that outlined the design and implementation of a VR software application to showcase the capabilities and functionality of this "Synchronous Multi-User Cross-Platform Virtual Reality for School Teachers", which consisted of using questionnaire data collected from school educators in England and it was part of a larger study. Whilst the challenges addressed are those that are faced in Malawi, the platform has more general applicability to a range of teaching contexts. © 2024, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) offer a cost-effective approach to creating adaptable wireless communication environments. this study focuses on a double-RIS assisted multi-user network, deploying two RISs near a multi-antenna base station (BS) and a cluster of nearby users. the communication occurs through a cascaded double-reflection link: BS-RIS 1-RIS 2-users. Our objective is to optimize beamforming at the BS and quantized programmable reflecting elements of the RISs to maximize the geometric mean of users’ rates. We present an efficient algorithm that generates improved feasible solutions using closed-form methods. Simulations confirm the algorithm’s effectiveness in enhancing rate fairness among users. © 2023, © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

thanks to its numerous benefits, and mainly the fact that it enables time and money savings, and complex geometry fabrication, the use of additive manufacturing (AM) has expanded in many fields, such as aerospace and the medical filed. the accuracy and the precision of the process are, however, limited to the attainment of a sub-millimeter material printing scale. In addition, the product quality depends on various factors such as material types, printing techniques, layer thickness, support materials as well as part orientation. Furthermore, the tolerancing approach has been considered one of the most controversial issues related to AM. this obviously means that the choice of AM printing parameters must take into consideration the specifications of the product to be produced. thus, the objective of this work is to determine the optimal printing orientation of a given part. this choice is based on the tolerances already existing in this part. For this purpose, a mathematical approach that models material deposition for different orientations is developed. the geometric defects between the nominal part and the model built by material deposition are measured. Afterwards, the solution is integrated into CAD software.
