Low-Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) are an enabling technology for many internet of things (IoT) applications. To allow LLNs to interoperate with the internet the IETF is specifying IP-compatible standards that are specifically designed for embedded devices with small memory and limited computing capabilities. the purpose of this paper is to investigate the interplay between the recently proposed IETF standard for IPv6 routing in LLNs, called RPL, with state-of-the-art autoconfiguration algorithms that assign network addresses in a hierarchical manner. To this end, we have extended the default RPL implementation available in Contiki operating system to support T-DAAP, LISAA and DAAM addressing schemes. Our experimental results clearly show that the mechanisms used by RPL to configure and maintain a tree-based network topology frequently break address hierarchy, limiting the opportunities for route aggregation. Furthermore, classical techniques used to reduce network instability significantly increase the network set-up times and, in same cases, degrade path qualities.

Autonomous wireless networks play an increasingly crucial role in today's society. Harsh environmental conditions, challenging deployment topologies, unreliable (or non-existing) power grids, as well as misguided control procedures of communications infrastructures by governmental authorities have made autonomous communication infrastructures a valuable asset for long-term development and wealth of societies. However, such wireless networks are in an early phase of their development and need to incorporate necessary equipment and algorithms for autonomous operation. this paper presents a concept and a concrete simulation scenario showing how a distributed context management system and the data collected and distributed by such a system can improve the performance of an autonomous, coordinated wireless mesh network (ACWMN). Research agrees that it is context awareness that will transform today's networks to incorporate autonomous, coordinated behavior. We further depict a concrete example simulation scenario where the access capacity of an ACWMN with WLAN radio access technology is significantly increased by coordinating user access with upper limits on the number of users that can concurrently request data services.

the internet topology can be viewed at the physical-, router-, PoP-, and AS-level. Intuitively, a richly connected lower level can improve the resilience of a service at higher levels. Understanding the structure of the internet from a multilevel point of view is more realistic than examining its properties at individual levels. We have developed a framework to analyse the robustness of multilevel and multiprovider networks. We show that multilevel graphs exhibit different performance from single level graphs. Moreover, our framework validates the robustness of the internet core due to its rich connectivity.

this paper proposes a dynamic traffic management mechanism which addresses the problem of cost-optimal distribution of inevitable inter-domain traffic on multiple links, and enables dynamic overlay traffic management and adaptation to constantly changing traffic patterns to meet cost optimization goals. the mechanism allows for the management of traffic generated by overlay applications such as content delivery platforms, online storage systems, or P2P.

To provide better life quality for mankind through the use of electrical and electronic devices that surround the world, controlling and communication between these equipments must occur and it must happen in an automatic and transparent way. this paper proposes a model based on usual technology to enable the event reading and the controlling of electrical devices, already existent and later developed, through a RESTful API or UPnP technology in order to allow the easy development of applications that can effectively improve life by transparent interaction with regular people. Furthermore, it will be proposed two direct applications of these APIs and it will be shown how to extend it.

With digitization there is a plethora of personal information, such as, health records and personal artifacts, that are stored on the data servers provided by the internet companies. Such a solution is resource-intensive as the servers should be up and running. Moreover, the users no longer have complete control over their own data. We propose an alternative architecture where the data is no longer stored on internet servers, but on set of new hardware devices called Secure Portable Tokens (SPTs) that are under the control of individual users. SPTs are cheap, portable, and secure devices that combine the computing power and tamper-resistant properties of the smart cards and the storage capacity of NAND flash memory chips. SPTs can be used to store personal data and can act as a Personal Data Server (PDS). In order to make such stored data reliable and available, we propose to have a set of SPTs storing personal data of individuals that form a cloud which we refer to as Personal Data Server Clouds. We provide protocols, based on the publish-subscribe paradigm, that demonstrate how replication and query processing are performed in the PDS clouds. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by developing a prototype PDS cloud that is geographically distributed and stores personal health records (PHRs).

the rapidly increasing use of mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, as well as the high popularity of mobile applications and especially video streaming incur an increasing traffic demand on mobile cellular systems. the cloud computing and the software defined networking (SDN) paradigms constitute suitable tools for mobile networks to efficiently handle the increasing video traffic. In this paper, we focus on content and, in particular, video delivery services on top of emerging and next generation cellular networks which employ SDN in their core, mainly from a business standpoint. We analyze the stakeholders and their business interests and relationships, also providing a value network and business model analysis for both existing and emerging use cases of interest.

the internet today continues to be vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. We consider the design of a scalable agent-based system for collecting information about the structure and dynamics of DDoS attacks. Our system requires placement of agents on inter-autonomous system (AS) links in the internet. the agents implement a self-organizing and totally decentralized mechanism capable of reconstructing topological information about the spatial and temporal structure of attacks. the system is effective at recovering DDoS attack structure, even at moderate levels of deployment. In this paper, we demonstrate how careful placement of agents within the system can improve the system's effectiveness and provide better tradeoffs between system parameters and the quality of structural information the system generates. We introduced two agent placement algorithms for our agent-based DDoS system. the first attempts to maximize the percentage of attack flows detected, while the second tries to maximize the extent to which we are able to trace back detected flows to their sources. We show, somewhat surprisingly, these two objectives are concomitant. Placement of agents in a manner which optimizes in the first criterion tends also to optimize with respect to the second criterion, and vice versa. Both placement schemes show a marked improvement over a system in which agents are placed randomly, and thus provide a concrete design process by which to instrument a DDoS flow reconstruction system that is effective at recovering attack structure in large networks at moderate levels of deployment.

there is increasing collaboration in new generation supply chain planning applications, where participants across a supply chain analyze and plan on a big volume of sales data over the internet together. To achieve real-time collaborative planning over big data, we have developed an unconventional technology, BigObject, based on an in-place computing approach in two ways. First, instead of moving (big) data around, move (small) code to where data resides for execution. Second, organize the complexity by determining the basic functional units (objects) for computing in the same sense that macromolecules are determined for living cells. the term ”in-place” indicates that data is in residence in memory space and ready for computing. BigObject is an in-place computing system, designed for storing and computing multidimensional data. Our experiment shows that in-place computing approach outperforms traditional computing approach in two orders of magnitude.
