Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications emerge to achieve ubiquitous communications among all the networked devices. One challenging problem in M2M applications is to discover the resources provided by the devices efficiently. this challenge arises from two perspectives: (1) a large number of heterogeneous devices co-exist and most of them are constrained devices (e.g., limited processing capability), (2) different communication protocols are utilized to get access to different types of resources provided by the devices (e.g., humidity information provided by a sensor). this paper proposes distributed resource directory architecture for M2M applications, referred to as DRD4M. the DRD4M supports heterogeneous devices using HTTP and CoAP protocols for resource registration and lookup. this enables the interoperability among heterogeneous devices and resource access to constrained devices from disparate network including the internet. the DRD4M introduces two components: a resource registration component for registering resources and a resource lookup component with caching functionality for handling resource lookup with filtering. A peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay is introduced in DRD4M to connect resource peers to avoid single point of failure. A real-world prototype is implemented and is verified with a demo application. Preliminary performance evaluation in terms of response time of resource lookup is provided.

the scope of this paper is two-fold: firstly it proposes the application of a 1-2-3 Zones approach to internet of things (IoT)-related Digital Forensics (DF) investigations. Secondly, it introduces a Next-Best-thing Triage (NBT) Model for use in conjunction with the 1-2-3 Zones approach where necessary and vice versa. these two `approaches' are essential for the DF process from an IoT perspective: the atypical nature of IoT sources of evidence (i.e. Objects of Forensic Interest - OOFI), the pervasiveness of the IoT environment and its other unique attributes - and the combination of these attributes - dictate the necessity for a systematic DF approach to incidents. the two approaches proposed are designed to serve as a beacon to incident responders, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of their IoT-related investigations by maximizing the use of the available time and ensuring relevant evidence identification and acquisition. the approaches can also be applied in conjunction with existing, recognised DF models, methodologies and frameworks.

In this paper, we present a performance comparison between IEEE 802.15.4 which specifies the physical and media access control layers for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs) like ZigBee, and IEEE 802.11ah, a new global WLAN standard using sub-1 GHz frequency band, in terms of throughput and energy consumption. Both standards are targeting low power applications with relatively high number of nodes as in IoT and M2M applications. the simulations results demonstrate the better performance of IEEE 802.11ah throughput mainly in congested networks. However in particular cases, the IEEE 802.15.4 outperforms the IEEE 802.11ah from energy consumption point of view.

the HIP Diet EXchange (DEX) is an end-to-end security protocol designed for constrained network environments in the IP-based internet of things (IoT). It is a variant of the IETF-standardized Host Identity Protocol (HIP) with a refined protocol design that targets performance improvements of the original HIP protocol. To stay compatible with existing protocol extensions, the HIP DEX specification thereby aims at preserving the general HIP architecture and protocol semantics. As a result, HIP DEX inherits the verbose HIP packet structure and currently does not consider the available potential to tailor the transmission overhead to constrained IoT environments. In this paper, we present Slimfit, a novel compression layer for HIP DEX. Most importantly, Slimfit i) preserves the HIP DEX security guarantees, ii) allows for stateless (de-)compression at the communication end-points or an on-path gateway, and iii) maintains the flexible packet structure of the original HIP protocol. Moreover, we show that Slimfit is also directly applicable to the original HIP protocol. Our evaluation results indicate a maximum compression ratio of 1.55 for Slimfit-compressed HIP DEX packets. Furthermore, Slimfit reduces HIP DEX packet fragmentation by 25 % and thus further decreases the transmission overhead for lossy network links. Finally, the compression of HIP DEX packets leads to a reduced processing time at the network layers below Slimfit. As a result, processing of Slimfit-compressed packets shows an overall performance gain at the HIP DEX peers.

this paper proposed an optimized strategy of the incentive mechanism for participatory sensing network on the basis of Sense Util which is our previous research work. For optimizing, the strategy considered the possibility of that some users actually cannot participate the current sensing task, so in order to avoid unnecessary energy and bandwidth consumption on server end, users were classified into different subsets according to their position, and server distributed the sensing tasks directionally. To evaluate the performance of the strategy, we conducted simulation study, and the results showed that the optimization work is energy efficient.

Mobile devices have already been widely used to access the Web. However, because most available web pages are designed for desktop PC, it is inconvenient to browse these large web pages on a mobile device with a small screen. In this paper, we propose a new web page transforming scheme to facilitate navigation on a small-form-factor device based on cloud computing. Different with other existing schemes, our approach is based on page segmentation and template-rendering. the semantic structure of a web page is extracted by DOM (Document Object Model) analyzing. Such semantic structure is hierarchical. Each node is corresponded to a block area of one web page and is in charge of reconstructing the whole web page. According to different content styles, the template-rendering scheme generates different display modes. Experimental results show good experience.

In this paper we propose to integrate Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) formed by OpenFlow switches. the use of a centralized network controller and the ability to setup arbitrary paths for data flows make SDN a handy tool to deploy fine-grained traffic engineering algorithms in WMNs. However, centralized control may be harmful in multi-hop radio networks formed by commodity devices (e.g. Wireless Community Networks), in which node isolation and network fragmentation are not rare events. To exploit the pros and mitigate the cons, our framework uses the traditional OpenFlow centralized controller to engineer the routing of data traffic, while it uses a distributed controller based on OLSR to route: i) OpenFlow control traffic, ii) data traffic, in case of central controller failure. We implemented and tested our Wireless Mesh Software Defined Network (wmSDN) showing its applicability to a traffic engineering use-case, in which the controller logic balances outgoing traffic among the internet gateways of the mesh. Albeit simple, this use case allows showing a possible usage of SDN that improves user performance with respect to the case of a traditional mesh with IP forwarding and OLSR routing. the wmSDN software toolkit is formed by Open vSwitch, POX controller, OLSR daemon and our own Bash and Python scripts. the tests have been carried out in an emulation environment based on Linux Containers, NS3 and CORE tools.

Twitter is a breed of social networks that are playing a buoyant role in today's world communication. this paper is an attempt to apply knowledge discovery process on Twitter dataset comprising hashtags along with the visual analytic techniques whose purpose is to provide information to the people in such a way so that they understand concealed knowledge in the data effortlessly and meritoriously. We further analyze tweet text and metadata associated with each tweet for identification of useful patterns like "who talks to whom" and "how much". Our research reveals the impact of visualization and hierarchical clustering technique in analyzing similar groups of users. Further we investigate different social network measures that unveil the influence of users in the particular hashtags.

the last decade has seen an increasing interest for wireless communications. With the current use of smart-phones and tablets, together with the rise of the internet of things, the number of mobile nodes in networks is significantly changing the way they are managed. Indeed, these wireless networks are highly dynamic, mainly, regarding topology and traffic matrices. the high dynamism of mobile nodes can for instance impact the connectivity of the network, or the role of the nodes in the routing graph. Given this increasing complexity, network's service management requires to be as autonomous as possible. However, autonomy can not be achieved unless the network is able to assess and understand its own behavior. In this paper, we propose an assessment index (SA) based on nodes' satisfaction and its self-estimation algorithm for wireless mobile *** then provide events' collection and distributed mining methods allowing nodes to analyze the evolution of this *** illustrate our framework and characterize the estimation error for various network properties under NS3 simulations.

Community networks offer a shared communication infrastructure where communities of citizens build and own open networks. While the IP connectivity of the networking devices is successfully achieved, the number of services and applications available from within the community network is typically small and the usage of the community network is often limited to providing internet access to remote areas through wireless links. In this paper we propose to apply the principle of resource sharing of community networks, currently limited to the network bandwidth, to other computing resources, which leads to cloud computing in community networks. Towards this vision, we review some characteristics of community networks and identify potential scenarios for community clouds. We simulate a cloud computing infrastructure service and discuss different aspects of its performance in comparison to a commercial centralized cloud system. We note that in community clouds the computing resources are heterogeneous and less powerful, which affects the time needed to assign resources. Response time of the infrastructure service is high in community clouds even for a small number of resources since resources are distributed, but tends to get closer to that of a centralized cloud when the number of resources requested increases. Our initial results suggest that the performance of the community clouds highly depends on the community network conditions, but has some potential for improvement with network-aware cloud services. the main strength compared to commercial cloud services, however, is that community cloud services hosted on community-owned resources will follow the principles of community network and will be neutral and open.
