the increasing use of wireless internet and smartphone has accelerated the need for widespread computing. Smartphones stimulate growth of Global Position Systems (GPS) and mobile cloud computing. Mobile cloud computing is the cloud infrastructure where the computation and storage are moved away from mobile devices. However, smartphone mobile computing poses challenges because of the limited battery capacity, constraints of wireless networks and the limitations of device. therefore, it is necessary to offload the computation-intensive part by careful partitioning of application functions across a cloud. Mobile applications can be executed in the mobile device or offloaded to the cloud clone for execution, in this paper; we propose a new elastic application model that enables transparent use of cloud resources to augment the capability of resource constrained mobile devices. the significant features of this model include the partition of a single application into multiple components. Its execution location is transparent it can be run on a mobile device or migrated to the cloud. thus, an elastic application can augment the capabilities of a mobile device including computation power, storage, and network bandwidth, with the light of dynamic execution configuration according to device's status including CPU load, memory, battery level. We demonstrate promising results of the proposed application model using data collected from one of our example elastic applications.

this paper focuses on a healthcare solution capable of converting echocardiography videos into text, and vice versa, for transmission between urban and rural areas. People living in rural areas often encounter restrictions on essential healthcare services because of large distances. Telemedicine provides a possible answer to this problem. Several wireless technologies have been used in telemedicine systems and have widen the availability of medical services. However, wireless connectivity for mobile devices remains low in rural areas, especially Malaysia. the transmission of digital media requires high bandwidth wireless connections due to large file sizes. Without it, transmission delays may prevent effective patient care. Furthermore, in areas lacking internet connectivity, these services may cease to function. Preliminary experiments show that the proposed solution can achieve a file size reduction ranging from 66% to 96% when converting video to text.

this paper describes collaborative social authoring technique using SNS (Social Network Service) contents, especially SNS event photos uploaded to Facebook by the author and collaborating authors. the main motivation of our research is to support the collaboration among event participants for co-authoring of event contents systematically while gathering participant's social data and utilizing the expertise of each participant. the traditional UCC (User Created Content) relies on UCC author oneself and one's data only. the resources of UCC are collected from author's personal data and also from a search result from several web sites. In case of collaborative authoring of a YouTube video, authors exchange intermediate contents through e-mail or shared storage space like cloud storage. the main features of our research include (i) web-based collaboration service, (ii) recommendation of contents from SNS (social network services) sites based on user's interest degree, and (iii) DUI (distributed user interface) for social authoring, especially, supporting both desktop environment and also mobile participation using component-based web-app. As an application, experiment on social album creation from Facebook photos is introduced and shows the effectiveness of our system.

Data-intensive applications in e-Science require scalable solutions for storage as well as interactive tools for analysis of scientific data. It is important to be able to query the data in a storage-independent way, and to be able to obtain the results of the data-analysis incrementally (in contrast to traditional batch solutions). We use the RDF data model extended with multidimensional numeric arrays to represent the results, parameters, and other metadata describing scientific experiments, and SciSPARQL, an extension of the SPARQL language, to combine massive numeric array data and metadata in queries. To address the scalability problem we present an architecture that enables the same SciSPARQL queries to be executed on the RDF dataset whether it is stored in a relational DBMS or mapped over a specialized geographically distributed e-Science data store. In order to minimize access and communication costs, we represent the arrays with proxy objects, and retrieve their content lazily. We formulate typical analysis tasks from a computational biology application in terms of SciSPARQL queries, and compare the query processing performance with manually written scripts in MATLAB.

A collection of pervasive street games is presented in this paper, that constitute a new social form of play taking place in public spaces, such as city parks, public spaces and streets. the main characteristic of these games is the ability to scale to a large number of players (in some cases involving more than 40 players) and can engage players located simultaneously in dispersed areas. Players interact with each other using a wide range of hardware devices that are either generic (such as smart phones) or specific (such as wireless sensor devices). We discuss a set of fundamental issues related to game design emphasizing on the one hand the interaction of the players with the ubiquitous computing environment and on the other hand the embedding of the game rules within the environment. the games are developed using open source technologies and evaluated in a series of events such as the Athens Plaython 2012 festival. the feedback received from the players indicates that this new form of gaming is indeed very promising.

In last years, wireless networking is becoming very popular because it is able to satisfy user requests in terms of Quality of Service (QoS); when mobility is present, perhaps, hand-over issues are relevant when hosts change coverage areas during their active sessions. It is very important to mitigate mobility effects, employing an appropriate bandwidth management policy. In our work, we propose two integrated schemes: the first one is based on Markov theory and is aimed at the prediction of mobile hosts movements (in terms of future cells), while the second one is based on statistical theory and is aimed at the minimization of the wasted bandwidth used for passive reservations. So, the proposed Pattern Prediction and Passive Bandwidth Management Algorithm (3P-BMA) is the result of the integration of the Markov predictor and the statistical bandwidth management scheme. 3P-BMA is completely independent on the considered technology, mobility model and vehicular environment. We do not care if the coverage is made by UMTS or WLAN technologies, if hosts are pedestrians or mobile users, etc. Some campaigns of simulation have been led-out in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed idea in terms of prediction accuracy, Call Dropping/Blocking probabilities and system utilization.

In recent years, the scale of clouds and networks has increased greatly. It is important to ensure that the management systems used in these environments can scale as well. A centralized system does not scale well, while for distributed approaches, it is difficult to maintain an overview of the global system state. In hierarchical management systems, nodes at a low level in the hierarchy have a detailed view of a small part of the network, while higher-level nodes have a less detailed view of larger parts of the network. this makes hierarchical management systems well suited for large scale systems. the structure of such a hierarchical system should however be impacted by the management system for which it is used, as various properties such as the number of child nodes, tree depth and the distance between nodes can impact the performance of the management system. In this paper, we describe the Scalable Hierarchical Management Framework (SHMF), a scalable approach for constructing a hierarchical management system, suitable for large-scale cloud environments, that automatically optimizes its structure in function of its overlying management system. We evaluate the approach based on the requirements for the cloud application placement problem.

Network search makes operational data available in real-time to management applications. In contrast to traditional monitoring, neither the data location nor the data format needs to be known to the invoking process, which simplifies application development, but requires an efficient search plane inside the managed system. the search plane is realized as a network of search nodes that process search queries in a distributed fashion. this paper introduces matching and ranking for network search queries. We are proposing a semantic for matching and ranking, which is configurable to support different types of management applications-from exact matching for database-style queries to loose, approximate matching, which is appropriate for exploratory purposes. We describe an echo protocol for efficient distributed query processing that supports matching and ranking. Further, we present the design of a search node, which maintains a real-time database of operational information and allows for parallel processing of search queries. A prototype implementation on a cloud testbed shows that the network search system, on a 9-node cluster with 24 core servers, executes 200 global search queries/sec with the 75th percetile latency below 100 milliseconds and with a CPU utilization below 5%. the performance measurements, together with our design, suggest that a system of 100,000 servers processing the same load would exhibit the same overhead per server and a query latency of below 1 sec.

Collaborative online social media (CSM) applications such as Wikipedia have not only revolutionized the World Wide Web, but they also have had a hugely positive effect on modern free societies. Unfortunately, Wikipedia has also become target to a wide-variety of vandalism attacks. Most existing vandalism detection techniques rely upon simple textual features such as existence of abusive language or spammy words. these techniques are ineffective against sophisticated vandal edits, which often do not contain the tell-tale markers associated with vandalism. In this paper, we argue for a context-aware approach for vandalism detection. this paper proposes a content-context-aware vandalism detection framework. the main idea is to quantify how well the words contained in the edit fit into the topic and the existing content of the Wikipedia article. We present two novel metrics, called WWW co-occurrence probability and top-ranked co-occurrence probability for this purpose. We also develop efficient mechanisms for evaluating these two metrics, and machine learning-based schemes that utilize these metrics. the paper presents a range of experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Femto cells have been integrated into 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular network architecture to efficiently address the coverage and capacity issues faced in indoors and at hotspots. though spectral efficiency increases through frequency reuse one at Femtos, it could lead to co-tier interference and cause higher interference for cell edge User Equipments (UEs). this problem is more severe in enterprise and hotspot Femto deployments due to dense placement of Femtos. Existing co-tier interference management techniques do not solve this problem completely. Hence, in this paper, we propose a Variable Radius (VR) algorithm which dynamically increases or decreases the cell edge/non-cell edge region of Femtos and efficiently allocates the radio resources among cell edge/non-cell edge region of Femtos so that the co-tier interference between neighboring Femtos can be avoided. We implemented the proposed VR algorithm on top of Proportional Fair (PF) scheduling algorithm in NS-3 simulator. In our experiments, for 90 UEs the proposed technique (VR + PF) achieved 29% and 38% improvement in average throughput for static and mobile scenarios, respectively when compared to classic PF algorithm without any interference management.
