this work presents dominant pole design (DPD) methodology, one MATLAB implementation of DPD and its usage. DPD for PI and PID controllers is derived, and on this basis MATLAB toolkit for three-pole method (3PM) has been developed. the least squares procedure for finding functional dependence of PID controller parameters on process parameters is described. this least squares procedure has been applied to the first order process with dead time (FODT) obtained functional dependence, expressed through tuning formulas, is presented. Performance of PID controller tuned with 3PM tuning formulas is compared to the performance of PID controller tuned with integral criteria derived tuning formulas. Observed characteristics of DPD method are given at the end of the paper.

this paper presents an extended frequency range CMOS monolithic voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) design. A negative feedback control algorithm is used to automatically adjust the VCO range according to the control voltage. Based on this analog feedback control algorithm, the VCO achieves a wide range without any pre-register settings. Low phase noise is achieved by using both coarse control and fine control in the VCO. A 600 MHz to 3.3 GHz monolithic CMOS PLL, based on this wide range and low phase noise VCO, has been fabricated in TSMC 0.18 /spl mu/m, 1.8 V CMOS technology and is used in many different applications such as FC, GE, and SONET etc.

In this paper, we describe a hybrid intelligent system for formulation of BCS Class II drugs in hard gelatin capsules. Several significant challenges are involved in drug-formulation: the active ingredients and the fillers in the capsule must be chemically compatible according to bio-pharmaceutical principles;the formulation must be manufacturable;and it must meet the prescribed drug release requirement. Traditional trial and error approach to drug-formulation design is too costly and time consuming to meet the increasing demand for new drugs. To answer these challenges, we have developed a prototype hybrid intelligent system for automatic drug formulation. this system consists of a rule-based Expert System (ES) that conducts formulation design according to Biopharmaceutical Classification of drugs and a neural network (NN) that predicts the quality of the formulation recommended by ES. through interaction between the two modules, the hybrid system forms a (re) formulation-prediction cycle, and the quality of the formulation is improved with each iteration. the hybrid system is tested with sample drugs and is shown to be able to produce formulations with desirable performance measures. © 2002 Nanyang Technological University.

this paper deals with the possibility of applying predictive control for water level control in tanks of water supply plants. the proposed control system includes a ground water intake plant; water treatment plant and water tanks. Since predictive controllers are based on mathematical models of controlled processes, the mathematical model of a water supply plant has been created for the purpose of design and verification of this control algorithm. the price of electrical energy during the day has also been taken into consideration for controller design. By doing this, in addition to keeping the water level within regulated limits, reduction of the costs of energy consumption has been achieved. the properties of the designed control system have been investigated by water supply plant mathematical model simulation.

In general, small-sized networks, even though they show good generalization performance, tend to fail to learn the training data within a given error bound, whereas large-sized networks learn easily the training data but yield poor generalization. In this paper, a pruning algorithm of neural networks using impact factor regularization is described to train network without overfitting and to achieve a small-sized network. In order to achieve this goal, an automatic determination method of the regularization parameter and an extended Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm are developed as learning algorithms of neural networks. We tested the proposed method on four regression problems and the simulation results showed our algorithm is effective in regression.

A high performance automatic gain control (AGC) circuit is proposed in this paper. the proposed AGC incorporates a modified sample and hold peak-detector. Circuit operation of this new peak-detector demonstrates superior performance to the conventional one, by keeping and tracking the peak of the input signal at the same time. In addition, the design complexity of the proposed AGC is reduced in both the low pass filter and the demodulator due to the modified peak-detector. Based on simulation results, the complete AGC loop shows very satisfactory circuit operation. therefore, it is suitable for high performance communication applications such as ASK (amplitude shift keyed) receivers.

this paper describes the structural concept of an intelligent sensor system for tilt measurement. the accelerometer principle is used for the measurement. the system enables measurement in both axes of the plane. Measurement is controlled by a microprocessor. Measured data are sent via a bus to a PC. the PC is used for data storage and further calculations. the program controls the performance of defined functions, including calibration, by communication between the sensor system and the PC. It is possible to switch between manual (more precise) and automatic calibration of the position setup of the system. the system has measurement precision of 0.5/spl deg/ for each axis in a /spl plusmn/80/spl deg/ range, with no measurable hysteresis, and an immediate response to tilt change. the sensor system is temperature compensated. the LabView development tool is utilized as a service program.

Most of the existing techniques for document clustering rely on a "bag of words" document representation. Each word in the document is considered as a separate feature, ignoring the word order. We investigate the use of phrases rather than words as document features for the document clustering. We present a phrase grammar extraction technique, and use the extracted phrases as the features in a self-organizing map based document clustering algorithm. We present clustering results using the REUTERS corpus and show an improvement in clustering performance using both entropy and F-measure evaluation measures.

the paper deals with the possibilities available for testing the industrial distributed systems (field buses) and their components. It especially focuses on erroneous state handling tests, caused by the external electromagnetic disturbances. Although the common approach is the same for any field bus standard, each of them has some specific attributes that have to be taken into account. Above mentioned common approach is therefore illustrated by the example based on the CAN (controller Area Network) standard. A special instrument (test generator) was developed to meet all the specific test requirements; its design, features, parameters and usage are presented as well. the most important attribute of the presented approach is in providing the exactly defined and repeatable test conditions.

Character segmentation is a significant part in a character recognition system. Particularly, when the system is assumed to work in a color image with multi-segment characters such as Japanese Kanji characters, the complexity of the characters and the background properties bring the difficulties to the segmentation problem. Discussion in this paper is focused on designing an automatic system for locating text regions, assuming that the texts are composed by Kanji characters. the principle of the proposed model is the inclusion of recognition phase to give a feedback in controlling the segmentation task, yielding a robust algorithm to solve the complexity of the characters. the algorithm is assumed to work with color images, which makes it suitable for practical applications. the evaluation of the model shows that the algorithm promises an appropriate approach to deal with the complexity of Kanji character segmentation.
