In the context of parallel and distributed computation, the currently existing numerical libraries do not allow code reuse. Besides, they are not able to exploit the multi-level parallelism offered by many numerical methods. A few linear algebra numerical libraries make use of object oriented approach allowing modularity and extensibility. Nevertheless, those which offer modularity together with sequential and parallel code reuse are almost non-existent. We analyze the lacks in existing libraries and propose a design model based on a component approach and the strict separation between computation operations, data definition and communication control of applications. We present then an implementation of this design using VIAL scientific workflow environment jointly with the object oriented LAKe (Linear Algebra Kernel) library. Some numerical experiments on GRID5000 platform validate our approach and show its efficiency.

In recent years, cloud computing sweeps the world and becomes the new direction for future network applications. the traditional operating systems lack constructivity and evolvability, support less for the application perception and multi-core platform so that they cannot satisfy the requirements of cloud computing applications well. So the development of next-generation cloud-oriented network operating system is very significant. In this position paper, we first explained the background of the new network operating system. then we listed some existing cloud computing operating systems. After describing the challenges that the project meets, we proposed the prototype architecture. We also discussed some key technologies and elaborated the expected typical scenario of developing and deploying applications in the proposed system. © 2011 IEEE.

Regular expression matching is widely used in many network applications to analyze suspicious traffic against predefined signatures, and to discover anomalous events. Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA), which recognizes a set of regular expressions, is the basic data structure to scan input traffic byte by byte. though DFA meets the requirement of real-time processing of network traffic, constructing a combined DFA for a set of regular expression signatures is very time-consuming, especially when the signature set is large. To attack this problem, we propose new strategies to accelerate DFA construction. the basic idea of our method is to construct the combined DFA by hierarchical merging of the DFAs of each single regular expression. Our method runs in O(ΙQΙΙ∑Ι ln n) time, which is substantially superior to the time complexity O(ΙQΙΙ∑Ι(∑ni=1ΙQiΙ)2) of classical subset construction algorithm[1]. Experiment on real signatures from open-source systems, such as L7-filter, BRO and SNORT, demonstrates that our method performs 45 times faster than the subset construction algorithm on average. © 2011 IEEE.

Position information is vital for wireless sensor networks in many applications. In this paper, based on the barycentric coordinate system, we incorporate a term constrains sensors to remain the intrinsic structure revealed by range measurements between neighboring nodes into the STRESS function, which is the cost function optimized by the distributed weighted-multidimensional scaling algorithm (dwMDS). By minimizing the modified cost function, we derive a distributed localization algorithm called the Multidimensional Scaling and Barycentric Coordinates based distributed Localization Algorithm (MDS-BC-DLA). Experimental results on four different types of WSNs show MDS-BC-DLA outperforms dwMDS. © 2011 IEEE.

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are increasingly being used to deliver live streaming on today's Internet. the new application type of live streaming exposes unique characteristics and challenges that require more advanced design of CDN infrastructure. Unlike traditional web-object delivering, which allows CDN content servers to cache contents and thus typically only involves certain CDN servers (e.g. edge content servers) for delivering contents, live streaming requires a real-time full CDN streaming path that spans across the streaming source, the CDN ingest server, the CDN content server, and end-viewers. though the ingest server is typically fixed for a particular live stream, appropriate content servers need to be selected for delivering the stream to end viewers. though today's CDNs typically employ layered infrastructure for delivering live streaming, in this work, we propose a flat-layered design which is referred to as Constrained Server Chaining (CSC) for selecting optimal content servers to deliver live streams. Rather than employing a strictly layered infrastructure, CSC allows CDN streaming servers to dynamically choose upstream servers, thus saves transit cost for CDN providers. © 2011 IEEE.

Resisting spam in tagging system is very challenging. this paper presents Sitab, a novel spam-resistant tagging system which can significantly diminish spam in tag search results based on users' implicit tagging behavior. Sitab is trained to obtain the weights of the client's each type of implicit tagging behavior. For each tag search, Sitab ranks each resource in the results list according to its relevance degree which is calculated by the client's implicit tagging behavior with respect to that resource. Experimental results show that Sitab can effectively resist tag spam and work better than existing tag search schemes, especially in systems with large amount of spam tags. © 2011 IEEE.

Since there has been significant amount of XML documents generated in various application domains, efficient XML management has become an important problem. distributed XML storage and parallel query based on MapReduce can be an effective solution to this problem. As XML data placement strategy is a key factor of parallel system performance, in this paper we present an XML placement strategy, which is Query Workload Estimation based XML Placement strategy (QWEXP) for efficient distributed XML storage and parallel query. To achieve query workload balance, it partitions XML based on query workload estimation which is calculated by XML structure without knowing of user queries, considering that in common application scenarios user queries are unknown in advance. the partitioned XML segments are around an XML storage unit W0, to support scalability of parallel XML database. Finally segments are distributed to each processing node evenly to ensure workload balance on parallel query execution. Experimental results have shown that QWEXP promotes the speedup and scaleup properties of parallel XML system greatly. © 2011 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. the EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to the advantages of cost-effectiveness, on-demand resource provision and easy for sharing, cloud computing has grown in popularity with research community for deploying scientific applications such as workflows. When such interest continues growing and workflows are widely performed in collaborative cloud environments that consist of a number of data centers, there is an urgent need for exploiting strategies which can place the application data across globally distributed data centers and schedule tasks according to the data layout to reduce both the latency and make span for workflow execution. In this paper, by utilising dependencies among datasets and tasks, we propose an efficient data and task co scheduling strategy that can place input datasets in a load balance way and meanwhile group the mostly related datasets and tasks together. We build a simulation environment on Tianhe supercomputer to evaluate the proposed strategy and run simulations by random and realistic workflows. the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can effectively improve workflows performance while reducing the total volume of data transfer across data centers. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile technologies are drawing their attention to the cloud computing due to the increasing demand of the applications, for processing power, storage space and energy. However, developing mobile cloud applications involves working with services and APIs from different cloud vendors. Most often these APIs are not interoperable and the information processed and stored into the cloud is non-transferable across clouds. To counter these problems, a generic middleware framework, Mobile Cloud Middleware (MCM) is designed, which handles the interoperability issues, and eases the use of process-intensive services from mobile phones. A prototype of MCM is developed and several applications are demonstrated in different domains. Moreover, to verify the scalability of MCM, load tests are performed on the hybrid cloud resources. the detailed performance analysis of the middleware framework shows that MCM improves the quality of service for mobiles and helps in maintaining soft-real time responses for mobile cloud applications. © 2011 ACM.
