It is difficult to implement distributed rendering on wide area network (WAN) because of limited-bandwidth and the asymmetric, heterogeneous resources. this paper presents a scalable architecture of asymmetric distributed animation rendering system based on WAN. Regarding the characteristics of WAN, two kinds of rendering group is proposed: cluster rendering group and unorganized PC rendering group. We also discuss key technologies, to provide a means of distributed rendering remotely at low cost. © 2010 IEEE.

In Internet applications, Web object prefetching is a commonly used and quite effective algorithmic approach to reduce user perceived delays. While a separate concept, prefetching is closely related to caching and they are often blended together in Web algorithms. In this paper, we give a review of Web prefetching models and algorithms, categorize them into groups based on their design principles, and compare their functionalities and performance. We then proposed a new prefetching algorithm that is based on the Adaptive Resonance theory (ART) of neural networks. the new model uses the bottom-up and top-down weights of the cluster-URL connections obtained from a modified ART1 algorithm to make prefecthing decisions. © 2010 IEEE.

the requirements of OLAP applications increase rapidly by dramatically increased data volume, users, query volume and query complexity. the requirement for shortening update period in data warehouse is another crucial factor for a scalable OLAP application. In this paper, we propose a scalable OLAP prototype to support the query processing with increasing data volume by distributing the whole fact tuples to multiple servers to construct a set of sibling cubes which can be merged together to obtain the whole cube. We employ a light weight distribution policy with fully duplicated dimension tables in each sibling server on the observation of very low proportion of space cost for dimension tables. OLAP query with distributed aggregate functions can be transformed into queries to be performed parallel in sibling servers. For non-distributed computing aggregate functions, such as median, the optimized median aggregate computing algorithm is proposed to reduce transmission volume between servers while computing the global median values. We also present a three-level framework in data warehouse to meet the requirement of shorter update period in "operational business intelligence". An asynchronous tunnel model is proposed to reduce update latency by pre-fetching updated tuples to OLAP processing server. Finally, we set up prototype system ParaCube to evaluate performance in SN (shared-nothing) system and multi-core platforms. © 2010 IEEE.

the data explosion in many applications requires efficient data mining solutions. Fortunately, emerging technologies like grid and cloud computing, high-performance multi-core processors and graphics processing units provide the potential to keep pace with the data explosion and open up new opportunities for designing efficient algorithms. In this paper, we propose a parallel variant of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm suitable for clustering large data sets in a distributed environment. the conventional EM algorithm sequentially iterates two phases: In the E-step, points are assigned to the clusters and in the M-step the cluster models are updated. the basic idea of our approach is allowing asynchronous model updates for faster convergence and best usage of the available resources. the frequency of the updates can be flexibly adjusted to the specific characteristics of the environment including communication costs and computing power of the single devices. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the benefits of our approach. © 2010 IEEE.

this paper introduces the newly developed Infini-Band (IB) Management Queue capability, used by the Host Channel Adapter (HCA) to manage network task data flow dependancies, and progress the communications associated with such flows. these tasks include sends, receives, and the newly supported wait task, and are scheduled by the HCA based on a data dependency description provided by the user. this functionality is supported by the ConnectX-2 HCA, and provides the means for delegating collective communication management and progress to the HCA, also known as collective communication offload. this provides a means for overlapping collective communications managed by the HCA and computation on the Central Processing Unit (CPU), thus making it possible to reduce the impact of system noise on parallel applications using collective operations. this paper further describes how this new capability can be used to implement scalable Message Passing Interface (MPI) collective operations, describing the high level details of how this new capability is used to implement the MPI Barrier collective operation, focusing on the latency sensitive performance aspects of this new capability. this paper concludes with small scale benchmark experiments comparing implementations of the barrier collective operation, using the new network offload capabilities, with established point-to-point based implementations of these same algorithms, which manage the data flow using the central processing unit. these early results demonstrate the promise this new capability provides to improve the scalability of high-performance applications using collective communications. the latency of the HCA based implementation of the barrier is similar to that of the best performing point-to-point based implementation managed by the central processing unit, starting to outperform these as the number of processes involved in the collective operation increases. © 2010 IEEE.

this paper tries to define mechanisms which insure the right functionality for systems based on the Volunteer Grid concept and propose a new framework for Volunteer Grid computing management. Volunteer Grid systems allow setting up high performance computer networks, easily, rapidly and at low costs, the main characteristic of their nodes being the volunteer participation. thus, a supercomputer is created, able to perform most complex calculations in a relatively short period of time. this volunteering itself is a weakness of the system, because not only physical faults must be taken into consideration, but also sabotages through which participants could try to increase their rating.

In this paper we present our work on the engine for integration of environmental data We present a suite of selected environmental scenarios, which are integrated into a novel data mining and integration environment being developed in the project ADMIRE the scenarios have been chosen for their suitability for data mining by environmental experts they deal with meteorological and hydrological problems, and apply the chosen solutions to pilot areas within Slovakia the main challenge is that the environmental data required by scenarios are maintained and provided by different organizations and are often in different formats. We present our approach to the specification and execution of data integration tasks, which deals with the distributed nature and heterogeneity of required data resources.

this paper presents WeLearn, an innovative system for e-learning and social interaction through common knowledge goals. the WeLearn community driven learning methods are technically supported through a three-tier architecture built over Web Services. Using a common network (the Internet), learning semantics are combined with file sharing to implement a new concept of the learning process. the article also analyzes challenges in the implementation of this novel learning model, in relation to current technologies.

this paper presents the framework of cyberinfrastructure and the state of the art in this area of research, as well as a preliminary analysis of a our university network capabilities for remote visualization and high performance computing. References are made to the cyber-tools and methods, such as high-performance computing, communication technologies, and simulation models, enabling progress in cyberinfrastructure development. the goal of cyberinfrastructure is to unite various distributed-knowledge communities in an integrated collaboration environment that will provide broad access to multiple scientific resources. Here, we present the main requirements for cyberinfrastructure development and the key components of a working cyberinfrastructure. A case study of the minimal requirements for a fluent video stream in a local communication network is discussed and the main data traffic characteristics are presented. In addition, an analysis regarding high performance computing capabilities of one of our local computer clusters is presented.
