Proactive fault tolerance (FT) in high-performance computing is a concept that prevents compute node failures from impacting running parallel applications by preemptively migrating application parts away from nodes that are about to fail. this paper provides a foundation for proactive FT by defining its architecture and classifying implementation options. this paper further relates prior work to the presented architecture and classification, and discusses the challenges ahead for needed supporting technologies.

With the help of massively parallelized computing techniques, a comprehensive, large-scale numerical simulation of CO2 geologic storage that predicts not only CO2 migration but also its impact on regional groundwater flow was performed. As a case study, a hypothetical industrial-scale injection of CO2 at the Tokyo Bay, surrounded by the most industrialized area in Japan, was considered. In the simulation, CO2 is injected into a storage aquifer at about 1km depths under the Tokyo Bay from 10 wells with a total rate of 10 million tons/year for 100 years. A regional hydrogeological model with an area of about 60km x 70km around the Tokyo Bay was discretized into approximately 10 million gridblocks. To solve the high-resolution model efficiently, we used a parallelized multiphase flow simulator TOUGH2-MP/ECO2N on a highest performance supercomputer in Japan, the Earth Simulator (5120 CPUs). the results suggest that even if containment of CO2 plume is ensured, pressure buildup in the order of tens of meters can occur in shallow confined layers of extensive regions including urban inlands. DNA Microarrays have dramatically reshaped modern biological research by deriving profiles of genome-wide expression of living organisms, and producing an unprecedented wealth of quantitative data. Given this characteristic, microarray experiments are considered high-throughput both in terms of data (data intensive) and processing (computationally intensive). GRISSOM enables exploitation of GRID resources for DNA microarray distributed processing. It provides experts with a complete web-based solution for managing, searching and disseminating biological knowledge in the context of gene expression patterns on a genomic scale. the platform is developed and deployed using open source software components. through the use of web service technologies (WSDL language) GRISSOM can be encapsulated in other biomedical processing workflows, thus rendering access to its algorithms, transparent and generic.

Since 2005 the Taiwanese government has invested over $1.2 billion into the M-Taiwan program to bolster Taiwan's broadband mobile communications industry and infrastructure. In addition to building a fiber backbone and providing R&D grants for developing new technologies and novel applications, it has also co-funded the constructions of four large-scale test networks. the Kaohsiung County broadband mobile network is the largest one, which consists of four major subsystems: (1) a mobile WiMAX wireless network that includes 90 base stations; (2) WiFi hot zones in three remote townships to provide on-line job training and Internet access to the indigenous residents; (3) a broadband IP network that provides VoIP and Internet data services to the county government and 27 township offices and their affiliated agencies and schools; and (4) a host of application services that include M-government, M-life and M-learning. this paper gives an overview of the system architecture, the employed technologies, the application services, test results and challenges.

Coalitional games raise a number of important questions from the point of view of computer science, key among them being how to represent such games compactly, and how to efficiently compute solution concepts assuming such representations. Marginal contribution nets (MC-nets), introduced by Ieong and Shoham, are one of the simplest and most influential representation schemes for coalitional games. MC-nets are a rule-based formalism, in which rules take the form pattern -> value, where "pattern" is a Boolean condition over agents, and "value" is a numeric value. Ieong and Shoham showed that, for a class of what we will call "basic" MC-nets, where patterns are constrained to be a conjunction of literals, marginal contribution nets permit the easy computation of solution concepts such as the Shapley value. However, there are very natural classes of coalitional games that require an exponential number of such basic MC-net rules. We present read-once MC-nets, a new class of MC-nets that is provably more compact than basic MC-nets, while retaining the attractive computational properties of basic MC-nets. We show how the techniques we develop for read-once MC-nets can be applied to other domains, in particular, computing solution concepts in network flow games on series-parallel networks. this paper presents the design of a multi-channel distributed monitoring platform, which is highly suitable to be applied into a traction supply system for urban railway transportation. In our platform are combined the technologies of Ethernet and virtual instrument, fully exerting their merits of large data capacity, high efficiency and low cost. With a HMI (Human Machine Interface) and a VO (Virtual Oscilloscope) in the platform, all the real-time data from traction supply system are presented to operators in a substation or control center. In the platform, there is a special Ethernet management software, realizing the protocols for Ethernet collision elimination, new IP allocation, and network health detection, and it has been proven to be practical and effective through field applications. there is also a DLL for the management of data among Ethernet, HMI and VO. Our HMI is developed with LabView, and the VO and DLL are with VC++6.0. the platform is subjected to the experiments on a prototype of novel traction supply system, and the experimental results are presented in the last part.

this paper presents Tupleware, a cluster middleware which provides a distributed tuple space intended for use by computationally intensive scientific and numerical applications. It aims to add no extra burden to the application programmer due to the distribution of the tuple space, and uses a decentralised approach and intelligent tuple search and retrieval to provide a scalable and efficient execution environment. Tupleware is evaluated using two applications: a modified quicksort and an ocean model, which demonstrates good scalability and a low system overhead.

For the given multiple patterns and a text string, firstly, a perfect hash function is constructed, the patterns are transformed into the unique pairs of integer values in parallel by the perfect hash function, the corresponding integer values are stored in a global hash table, and a recursion expression for computing hash function value of the signatures of each sub-string of text is also proposed. Secondly based on divisible load principle, a linear programming model for the optimal text distribution strategy is created and a parallel approximate multi-pattern matching algorithm allowing one error is presented on the heterogeneous cluster system which processors have different computing speeds and distinct communication capabilities and different memory sizes by taking into account computation and communication startup time and using the assigned processor distribution order. the experimental results on the cluster system of heterogeneous personal computers show that the presented parallel algorithm is averagely 25% faster than that one using the even text distribution strategy, and it obtains a nearly linear speedup and good scalability.
