We present an efficient and incremental (un)marshaling framework designed for distributedapplications. A marshaler/ unmarshaler pair converts arbitrary structured data between its host and network representations. this technology can also be used for persistent storage. Our framework simplifies the design of efficient and flexible marshalers. the network latency is reduced by concurrent execution of (un)marshaling and network operations. the framework is actually used in Mozart, a distributed programming system that implements Oz, a multi-paradigm concurrent language. New reconfigurable computing architectures are introduced to overcome some of the limitations of conventional microprocessors and fine-grained reconfigurable devices (e.g., FPGAs). One of the new promising architectures are Configurable System-on-Chip (CSoC) solutions. they were designed to offer high computational performance for real-time signal processing and for a wide range of applications exhibiting high degrees of parallelism. the programming of such systems is an inherently challenging problem due to the lack of an programming model. this paper describes a novel heterogeneous system architecture for signal processing and data streaming applications. It offers high computational performance and a high degree of flexibility and adaptability by employing a micro Task Controller (mTC) unit in conjunction with programmable and configurable hardware. the hierarchically organized architecture provides a programming model, allows an efficient mapping of applications and is shown to be easy scalable to future VLSI technologies. Several mappings of commonly used digital signal processing algorithms for future telecommunication and multimedia systems and implementation results are given for a standard-cell ASIC design realization in 0.18 micron 6-layer UMC CMOS technology.

Because new usage are expected from upcoming telecommunication and computer technologies, new applicationsthat are orders of magnitude larger than current single discipline applications are likely to be addressed in the near future. therefore, new computingtechnologies and practice are also required. Among these technologies are parallel and distributedcomputing, in cluster and grid-based environments. It is clear that large PC-clusters and wide area grids are currently used for demanding scientific applications, e.g., nuclear and environmental simulation. It is not so clear however what kind of new business models they will effectively support. We advocate in this paper the use of a grid-based infrastructure that is designed for a seamless approach to the new e-business users, although it relies on sophisticated computing environments based on computing grids, i.e., wide-area computing grids, connecting heterogeneous computing resources: mainframes, PC-clusters and workstations running application codes and utility software, e.g., remote processing and visualization tools. the approach is based on concepts defined by the HEAVEN*consortium. It is a European task force that includes industrial partners from the aerospace, telecommunication and software industries, as well as academic research institutes. the goal is to define, develop and provide test-beds for emerging applications and business in the forthcoming Information Society and to explore new usage of computingtechnologies in the economy and industry during the next decades.
In this paper, we present a constant time algorithm for solving three dimensional block-based medial axis transform (3D BB-MAT, for short) on the array with reconfigurable optical buses (AROB). the main contribution o...
