the current variety of parallel programming model (MPI, OpenMP,...) and the growing performance requirements for scientific applications (weather forecast, nuclear, etc.) require numerical analysis research to explore hybrid techniques. this later is a combination of several numerical techniques, or several copies of the same method parameterized differently in order to accelerate the convergence and/or to improve the accuracy of the solution of some large linear algebra problems. this paper shows how parallel collaborative computations, can outperform traditional ones by solving the communication challenge between the involved methods. Our work focuses on the hybrid computation of Krylov subspace methods, involved in solving most linear algebra problems underlying the previously mentioned large-scale applications. this paper proposes a strategy to realize an efficient hybrid computation, based on asynchronous non-blocking communication among the co-methods, and paves the way to a new approach to parallelize the tight-coupled algorithms on architecture made of cluster of shared memory nodes. By evaluating the performance of the hybrid Multiple Explicitly Restarted Arnoldi method [11] on IBM SP3 and SP4 platforms, we illustrate the effectiveness of our solution.

Cluster computers have become the vehicle of choice to build high performance computing environments. To fully exploit the computing power of these environments, one must utilize high performance network and protocol technologies, since the communication patterns of parallelapplications running on clusters require low latency and high throughput, not achievable by using off-the-shell network technologies. We have developed a technology to build high performance network equipment, called Maestro2. this paper describes the novel techniques used by Maestro2 to extract maximum performance from the physical medium and studies the impact of software-level parameters. the results obtained clearly show that Maestro2 is a promising technology, presenting very good results both in terms of latency and throughput. the results also show the large impact of software overhead in the overall performance of the system and validate the need for optimized communication libraries for high performance computing.

Grid technologies have been developed in response to an increase in demand for computingapplications designed to yield the benefits from collaboration, data sharing and sophisticated interaction of autonomous and geographically dispersed resources. distributed Query Processing (DQP) is an appealing solution for expressing and efficiently evaluating requests across Grid resources. In this paper: (i) we identify parts of the Grid infrastructure that facilitate, and open new directions for query processing over grid-enabled heterogeneous and autonomous databases, stressing the need for Adaptive Query Processing (AQP);(ii) we discuss some basic challenges arising from the new opportunities and outline the unsuitability for use in a Grid setting and narrow specialisation of existing proposals for AQP;and (iii) we suggest a generic adaptivity framework as a promising way forward.

Transformation of military information systems to a network-centric paradigm will remove traditional barriers to interoperability and enable dynamic access to information and analysis resources. the technical challenges of accomplishing network-centric warfare (NCW) require the engineering of agile distributed software components imbued withthe ability to operate autonomously on behalf of human individuals, while maintaining system level integrity, security, and performance efficiency on a grand scale. In this paper, we will describe how agents provide a critical technology enabler for applying emerging commercial technologies, such as web services, into network-centric warfare problems. the objective of our research is developing and sharing battlespace awareness and understanding. Our agent information service manages information collection and dissemination/publishing activities on behalf of fusion services in an autonomous, yet controllable fashion. Agents improve the scalability and reliability at the system of systems level through dynamic selection and exploitation of web services based upon needs and capabilities.

the 4thinternational Network conference (INC 2004) the papers in this issue of Internet Research are based on a selection of submissions from INC 2004, the 4thinternational Network conference, which was held in Plymouth, UK, from 6-9 July 2004. INC events have been running since 1998, and provide a forum for sharing the latest research in computer networks and related technologies. As regular readers of Internet Research may recall, papers from previous events have provided the basis for previous themed issues of the journal. In common with previous events, INC 2004 drew a truly international audience, with authors from 24 countries. these included a diverse mixture of academic and industrial participants, ensuring that a number of different perspectives were represented in boththe presentations and the subsequent discussions. the main themes addressed by the 2004 conference were Web technologies and applications, Network technologies, Security and Privacy, Mobility, and applications and Impacts. the full conference proceedings include a total of 70 papers, with coverage ranging from discussion of applications and services, down to details of specific underlying technologies[1]. the papers selected for this issue have been chosen to be representative of the broad range of topics covered by the conference, whilst at the same time addressing areas of relevance to the journal readership. To begin the discussion, Antonopoulos and Salter focus on the grid and other distributedcomputing environments, proposing a new model for resource discovery. their paper, which was the recipient of the INC 2004 Best Paper Prize (sponsored by Emerald and Internet Research), presents an outline of the proposed approach, and presents a comparative evaluation against existing alternatives. the grid-related discussion is maintained by Angelis et al., who consider the environment from the perspective of its security requirements. Specific attention is given to access control issues, with

the public-domain psi-Mag toolset uses generic-programming techniques to provide the computational magnetic-materials community an excellent opportunity for code reuse without loss of efficiency. psi-Mag provides a flexible implementation of the fast multipole method (FMM) for dipole-dipole calculations that does not depend on the geometry of the problem and is suitable for high-performance, parallel computers. theoretically, the execution time for such a calculation should grow only linearly withthe number of spins, and this is confirmed here for up to order 105 spins. In addition, the implementation efficiently uses a large number of processors. For a test case of 64000 dipoles, the measured speedup is over 25 for 40 processors on a four-processor-per-node IBM SP;this compares quite favorably with less-flexible FMM implementations. the generic implementation allows for easy changes of the basis functions used to expand potentials specific to particular applications, facilitating direct comparison of different approaches. Here, the traditional spherical-harmonic expansions are compared to Cartesian expansions which reflect the cubic symmetries of meshes used in typical micromagnetic simulations.
