Collaborative services and applications are becoming increasingly important and complex, and have requirements for real-time multimedia support, high bandwidth availability and low delays. the collaborative application view of QoS encompasses the transport network and the end systems, as well as computational requirements. therefore, how to coordinate and integrate collaboration management and network resource sharing efficiently and effectively is becoming more complex: a higher-level functionality is required in parallel with a satisfying performance. the functionality should satisfy the requirements of different levels of collaboration and respect a hierarchy of priorities among users and tasks. the performance, depending on the application or the network, should be sufficient for real-time information exchange, which is quite often a "heavy data exchange". We have developed a management framework to satisfy the complex functionality requirements that arise in the development of collaborative applications and services. the emphasis in designing such a framework is given on several levels of design that affect the performance of collaboration environments, the connection management, the replication management, the data management and the effective and interoperable usage of resources. Based on the proposed framework, we present a Java-based application for mission planning.

XJ DOME is a set of tools and techniques for those who wish to speed up development of distributed COM applications and improve their quality. DOME supports graphical modeling, code generation, simulation, deployment, monitoring and management. the simulation mode enables the developer to simulate the entire distributed application in virtual time on a single machine. After simulation step the application can be deployed onto the target network and managed via DOME Application Viewer. During run-time DOME platform enables the developer to collect and watch statistics, inspect threads and synchronization objects, view logs. DOME platform supports building of mobile agent systems on top of DCOM services. It provides for agent migration and employs DCOM security.

Recent performance enhancements, upgrade applications, and rapid advances in computers and networking technologies have all enabled information processing devices to share computer resources. We are interested in image processing that requires a large amount of calculations. If individual pixels forming an image can be calculated independently, the processing speed can be increased by parallel processing, thus reducing the overall processing time. However, it has been previously confirmed that increasing the number of servers beyond a certain point does not raise the parallel processing efficiency in a parallel distributed processing environment using a client-server model. therefore, we constructed a new processing environment using an agent model in order to investigate parallel image processing. this paper discusses the results of experiments in this environment in comparison with those of parallel processing in a client-server model.

We present an integrated environment for the systematic development of parallel and distributed programs. Our approach allows the user to construct complex applications by composing and transforming skeletons, i.e., recurring patterns of task and data parallelism. First academic and commercial experience with skeleton-based systems has demonstrated the benefits of the approach but also the lack of a dedicated set of methods for algorithm design and performance prediction. We take a first step towards such a set of methods by proposing an environment which integrates a framework for algorithm transformation, called FAN, with two existing skeleton-based programming systems: the academic system P3L and its commercial counterpart SkIE.

this paper presents SKiPPER, a programming environment dedicated to the fast prototyping of parallel vision algorithms on MIMD- DM platforms. SKiPPER is based upon the concept of algorithmic skele- tons, i.e. higher order program constructs encapsulating recurring forms of parallel computations and hiding their low-level implementation de- tails. Each skeleton is given an architecture-independent functional (but executable) specification and a portable implementation as a generic pro- cess template. the source program is a purely functional specification of the algorithm in which all parallelism is made explicit by means of com- posing instances of selected skeletons, each instance taking as parameters the application specific sequential functions written in C. SKiPPER compiles this specification down to a process graph in which nodes cor- respond to sequential functions and/or skeleton control processes and edges to communications. this graph is then mapped onto the target topology using a third-party CAD software (SynDEx). the result is a dead-lock free, optimized (but still portable) distributed executive, which SKiPPER finally turns into executable code for the target platform. the initial specification, written in ML language, can also be executed on any sequential platform to check the correctness of the parallel algorithm. the applicability of SKiPPER concepts and tools has been demonstrated by parallelising several realistic real-time vision applications both on a multi-DSP platform and a network of workstations. It is here illustrated with a real-time vehicle detection and tracking application. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Summary form only given, as follows. the efficient implementation of the FRED electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code on a modern distributed memory supercomputer is made difficult by the conflicting objectives of balancing the computational load and minimizing interprocessor communication. the irregular nature of the Lagrangian particle description in the FRED PIC code results in time-fluctuating data communication patterns which hinder efficient utilization of distributed memory parallel computers because of the resulting overhead for frequent data redistribution and dynamic load balancing. Some possible approaches to the resolution of these issues are presented and experience with one such approach on the LANL Blue Mountain (SGI Origin 2000) computer is discussed. the motivation for distributed memory implementation of the FRED code is to enable practical calculation of the plasma evolution of plasma opening switches in the 10**14 electron number density, /spl sim/100 ns timescale regime for volumes of /spl sim/1000 cc.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a discipline that has always been in the vanguard of the exploitation of emerging and developing technologies. Advances in both algorithms and computers have rapidly been absorbed by the CFD community in its quest for more accurate simulations and reductions in the time to solution. Within this context, parallel computing has played an increasingly important role. Moreover, the uptake of parallel computing has brought the CFD community into ever-closer contact with hardware vendors and computer scientists. the multidisciplinary subject of parallel CFD and its rapidly evolving nature, in terms of hardware and software, requires a regular international meeting of this nature to keep abreast of the most recent *** CFD '97 is part of an annual conference series dedicated to the discussion of recent developments and applications of parallel computing in the field of CFD and related disciplines. this was the 9th in the series, and since the inaugural conference in 1989, many new developments and technologies have emerged. the intervening years have also proved to be extremely volatile for many hardware vendors and a number of companies appeared and then disappeared. However, the belief that parallel computing is the only way forward has remained undiminished. Moreover, the increasing reliability and acceptance of parallel computers has seen many commercial companies now offering parallel versions of their codes, many developed within the EC funded EUROPORT activity, but generally for more modest numbers of processors. It is clear that industry has not moved to large scale parallel systems but it has shown a keen interest in more modest parallel systems recognising that parallel computing will play an important role in the future.

Dynamic load sharing policies take system state into account in making load distribution decisions. the state information can be maintained in one of two basic ways: distributed or centralized. Two principal types of policies that belong to the distributed scheme are the sender-initiated and receiver-initiated policies. In the centralized scheme, a central coordinator node is responsible for collecting system state information. distributed policies do not perform as well as the centralized policy. Performance of distributed policies is sensitive to variance in job service times and inter-arrival times. distributed policies, however, are scalable whereas the centralized policy can cause bottleneck and fault-tolerance problems for large systems. An adaptive distributed policy has been proposed that dynamically switches between sender-initiated and receiver-initiated policies depending on the system state. Here we propose a new global hierarchical load sharing policy that minimizes the drawbacks associated with the distributed and centralized policies while retaining their advantages. We provide a performance comparison of these policies and show that the proposed hierarchical policy provides the best performance among the distributed and adaptive policies for all the various system and workload parameters considered. © 13th international conference on Computers and their applications 1998, CATA 1998.
