Advances in networking and storage technologies have made it possible to build multimedia on-demand servers that provide service similar to those of neighborhood videotape rental stores. We propose a specialized high performance programmable multiprocessor architecture which allows continuous playback of mediastreams to large number of clients, a critical factor in multimedia servers. this architecture supports dynamic phase shifts in media distribution which is particularly useful in a distributed environment. We introduce algorithms for maximum concurrency extraction and to avoid task migration in the presence of dynamically changing demand. We show that our solution performs an order of magnitude better than other known solutions.< >

Describes a multimedia and multi-party desktop conference system called MERMAID (Multimedia Environment for Remote Multiple-Attendee Interactive Decision-making) which was developed as a groupware platform through the effective integration of computer and communication technologies. It allows a group of widely-dispersed users to conduct a meeting from their desktop workstations or personal computers. Participants can jointly view and process the multimedia information (including text, graphics, images and handwriting) they are sharing, and they can simultaneously interchange voice and video. thus, they can make a presentation and hold a discussion while interactively interchanging full media information in real-time. this system has already been used for daily research work, such as remote technical discussions, distributed software development, cooperative remote simulations, joint system design, joint document editing, etc., for more than 5 years. this paper first introduces MERMAID's functionalities and applications, and then provides some user experiences and evaluation results.< >

Exploitation of parallelism in massively parallel systems is intuitively appealing and is a promising avenue for achieving teraflop performance. However, parallelism is not free; apart from overheads in communication and synchronisation, having too much program parallelism can also raise serious resource management problems during program execution. the problem of resource management is particularly complicated by the distributed nature of massively parallel systems. We address the issue of managing parallelism in a massively parallel system. this is an extension of our previous work on hardware throttle for parallel systems. We propose two parallelism throttle schemes, and a scheme for monitoring and measurement of system workload. Processes in the system are initiated when runtime loading levels in the system permit. the aim is to match dynamic program parallelism to static machine parallelism. An experimental study is conducted using a simulated multi-cluster dataflow machine as a testbed. Our study shows the extent that control over runaway program parallelism is necessary, and that it is possible to have good distributed control of resource use in a massively parallel system.< >

the parallelizing compiler divides a given program into several processes which can be executed simultaneously in a distributed computer environment. However, a program has global variables generally. therefore, the processes have to share global variables since they are common in the program. In order to manage global variables correctly, the processes need to possess the broadcasting facility for data sharing and the synchronization facility for execution order control among the processes. We propose execution order control methods among the processes for sharing global variables in the distributed computer environment.< >

In signal restoration, especially image restoration, there are tremendous demands for large volume and high speed computations. the paper describes application of a novel noise filter, the adaptive differential iterative RMS filter (ADIRMS), to restoration of noisy signals without any a priori information regarding the signal. An efficient parallel implementation of the filter on distributed memory MIMD machines is outlined. Since the local memory in each processing element (PE) of the system is accessible to other PEs only via explicit message passing, the manner of data distribution and communication is a very important factor for efficient solution of a given problem; this issue is considered in some detail. the ADIRMS algorithm has been implemented on the Fujitsu AP1000 with high efficiency. We conclude that this algorithm provides a good basis for parallel implementation on distributed memory machines.< >

the commercial hypercube-based machine is a good physical architecture for embedding various logical topologies because of its logarithmic diameter and high bandwidth. through such embedding, the algorithms originally developed for logical topologies can be directly executed on hypercubes. We present a distributed scheme for embedding larger binary trees into smaller hypercubes. From a practical point of view, this is a very important issue when a hypercube of limited size is available. the desired embeddings can be constructed in parallel with time complexity of O (log N), where N is the total number of tree nodes. It provides a uniform many-to-one embedding with minimum overhead.< >

Presents the VLSI design of a router chip which implements wormhole routing using virtual channels. the router chip is intended for high-speed interconnection networks in parallel processors, and is capable of handling any interconnection network which is achieved by providing the routing function as a RAM-based lookup table. the architectural description of the chip is provided. the behavioral description of the chip is made by using the Verilog HDL. Finally, the chip is implemented using the standard-cell design automation package, OASIS.< >

Ray tracing is one of the computer graphics techniques used to render high quality images. Unfortunately, the ray tracing of complex scenes can require large amounts of CPU time, making the technique impractical for everyday use. Since the ray tracing calculations that determine the values of individual pixels are independent, this appears to be an easy problem to parallelize, and parallel algorithms have been proposed. However, pixel computation times can vary significantly, and naive attempts at parallelization give poor speedup due to the load imbalance between the processors. the key to achieving high parallel efficiency is to ensure that the computational load is evenly balanced. In this paper, we propose two new load balancing schemes and evaluate their performance for ray tracing on parallel processors. We term the new methods 'local distributed control' (LDC) and 'global distributed control' (GDC). Our new strategies are complementary: GDC performs forms well for high computational complexity images and LDC works well for low computational complexity images.< >

Presents a novel framework for the management of VLSI design processes. the framework allows the realisation of design process systems with capabilities that can match the problems to be solved. A framework called Colossus has been developed. It enables the VLSI design process space to be mapped onto distributed design domains, and it supports the necessary mechanisms for integrating the distributed capabilities of these domains to form design process systems. the systems realised are found to be flexible, in that their capabilities can be configured through design domain reorganisation and instantiation. Results obtained from a simplified layout generation system are presented to demonstrate the reconfiguration of system capabilities. In addition, the status of the framework and the systems implemented based on it are reported. It is believed that the framework can be used for the realisation of design process systems implemented across multiple hardware platforms and for the integration of multiple design process knowledge bases.< >

MCM technology can be usefully exploited in a number of areas in the design of large scale distributed memory MIMD processors. Within the interconnection technologies for multichip assemblies (ITMA) project two demonstrators have been selected for different applications within a parallel computer. the first demonstrator circuit is an extended switch element using a multichip module technology. the MCM usess four Elite switch devices connected on a silicon substrate. Flip chip bonding is used. A summary of device characteristics is given. the second demonstrator integrates a RISC CPU chip set along with a communications coprocessor. the resulting module contains all the components required for a MIMD processing node, with the exception of the DRAM and DRAM controller. the two demonstrator circuits are discussed.
