Uncertainty on the condition of the weather always give a major headache to the agricultural industry as the cultivated plant that is grown on a large scale commercially rely on the condition of the weather. therefore, to reduce the interdependency on the weather itself, a recommendation to develop a prototypic mobile robot for smart irrigation is submitted. Smart irrigation system is an essential tool from yield point of view and scarcity of the water. this smart irrigation system adopts a soil moisture sensor to measure the moisture content of the soil and automatically provide a signal to switches the water pump when the power is on. this mobile robot uses a tracked vehicle as the chassis of the robot whereby two parallel forces of motion are controlled to create a linear and rotation motion of the wheel. Besides, ultrasonic sensor is also assembled on this prototypic design to avoid any object or obstacles during the movement of the mobile robot. the novelty of this study is to demonstrate that the smart irrigation mobile robot can be used, not only to provide water to the crops but also, to reduce water usage. In this research, 2-Degree of Freedom Proportional Integral Derivative (2-DOF PID) controller is proposed for smart irrigation mobile robot after comparison between optimal 1-Degree of Freedom Proportional Integral Derivative (1-DOF PID) to acquire the best controller. Further investigation of controller effort, disturbance rejection and reference tracking are implemented to validate the capability of the proposal within the parameter of the system itself. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

User-Item (U-I) matrix has been used as the dominant data infrastructure of Collaborative Filtering (CF). To reduce space consumption in runtime and storage, caused by data sparsity and growing need to accommodate side information in CF design, one needs to go beyond the U-I Matrix. In this paper, we took a case study of Succinct Representations in Collaborative Filtering, rather than using a U-I Matrix. Our key insight is to introduce Succinct Data Structures as a new infrastructure of CF. Towards this, we implemented a User-based K-Nearest-Neighbor CF prototype via Wavelet Tree, by first designing a Accessible Compressed Documents (ACD) to compress U-I data in Wavelet Tree, which is efficient in both storage and runtime. then, we showed that ACD can be applied to develop an efficient intersection algorithm without decompression, by taking advantage of ACD's characteristics. We evaluated our design on 1,000 cores of Tianhe-II supercomputer, with one of the largest public data set ml-20m. the results showed that our prototype could achieve 3.7 minutes on average to deliver the results. © 2019 IEEE.

the paper deals with the questions of how to develop the automated planning systems that are fast enough to be used in real-time management of supply networks, considering the manual plan corrections by the users. Several practical situations and planning system use cases are considered. the paper proposes several methods that allow the increase of the data processing speed in practical cases. the methods include parallel data processing, dynamic control of the solutions space depth search, self-regulation of the system behavior based of the specifics of the data processed.

All pairwise computation is defined as performing computation between every pair of the elements in a given dataset. It is often a necessary first step in a number of bioinformatics applications. Many of such applications require multiple terabytes of main memory and take multiple peta floating point operations to complete the computation. therefore, large HPC clusters are needed to tackle these large-scale computational problems. Conventionally designed parallel algorithms using data partitioning may have a scalability issue, i.e., for a given problem of fixed size the efficiency may decrease if the number of compute nodes is increased (Amdahl's law). In this paper we introduce a new method for parallel algorithm design. Using this method we first design an efficient one-dimensional (1D) ring algorithm and then a two-dimensional (2D) algorithm based on the 1D ring for all pairwise computation. When increasing the compute nodes, instead of reducing the block size, we make multiple copies of the original data blocks in the 1D ring and distribute them across the added compute nodes in the other dimension. By properly organizing the compute nodes the communication overhead can be reduced to a minimum in this two-dimensional setting. Experiments on a Cray XC40 HPC supercomputer show that our new algorithms are very efficient and scalable for large-scale all pairwise computation on large HPC clusters. © 2019 IEEE.

In this paper parallel and hybrid metaheuristics for graph partitioning are compared taking into account their efficiency in terms of a cost function and computation time. Seventeen methods developed on the basis of evolutionary algorithm, simulated annealing and tabu search are implemented and tested against graph instances computed on the basis of queen graphs from DIMACS repository and a class of random R-MAT graphs. these graphs are supposed to model a class of digital circuits being subject of decomposition into a given number of modules. In partitioning process several additional constraints have to be satisfied in order to enable composition of original circuits from subcircuits by means of VLSI/FPGA modules.

Social norms are the informal understandings that govern the behavior within a society and are crucial for the feeling of togetherness and social cohesion. However, technology-mediated behavior often stands in conflict (e.g., parallel smartphone use undermining the norm of full attention for the conversation partner). Under the umbrella term 'disrespectful technologies', the present research discusses potential conflicts between technology use and social norms. We present four general types of frequent social norm conflicts, illustrate these by examples from research in different fields of HCI and a user survey, and discuss possibilities to address these in design. Altogether, we see the integration of social norm considerations in the user centered design approach as a long-term goal in HCI, with important consequences on an individual and societal level.

Named-Entity-Recognition (NER) or Item Aspect Recognition task is fundamental to e-commerce marketplace. A structured listing (i.e. item aspect and catalog) is critical to the success of the marketplace - it helps the seller to put their listings to the right catalog and aspects so that the buyers can easily find the most relevant and accurate listings they are looking for. For e-commerce search engine, item aspects (brand, color, size, texture, etc.) should be automatically recognized from users' shopping queries in order to accurate understand their shopping intent. An accurate query and item aspect understanding helps to match seller's listing to buyer's purchase intend. However, in practice, this still remains challenge in e-commerce marketplace due to a couple reasons, e.g. the sparsity of the data-hundreds of millions of item aspect-name and aspect-value pairs (e.g. brand=Nike);noisy (low quality), not scalable but expensive label data that are obtained via human labeling [12] effort;the lack of context in generally very short search queries;the disperse of context and dis-orderedness in listing title or descriptions, etc. among others. All those imposes a big challenge that affect the performance of aspect recognition for e-commerce practice. In this paper, we introduce an end-to-end machine learning system to build an effective aspect recognition system for search engine that leverages the generated label data from different legacy systems and effort, without any extra human-label effort (and thus no incurred cost). the framework is constructed with multiple machine learning components that are built to optimize the search relevance and conversion as an end goal. We show that the proposed aspect recognition machine learning system improved search results quality and relevance greatly compared to the existing already strong baseline system for e-commerce search.

One of the important trends of modern nanobiophysics is the development of the drug delivery systems on the basis unilamellar vesicles (ULVs) of phospholipids. the small angle scattering of neutrons (SANS) and of X-rays (SAXS) are well known tools for investigation of the structure of the nanosystems like ULVs. In our study, analysis of SANS/SAXS experimental data is based on the separated form factors method (SFF). Effectiveness of parallel implementation of the SFF approach on the basis of MPI-version of the local minimization procedure is investigated;the results of SFF-SANS analysis of structure of the phospholipid ULVs are presented.

the integration of local storage technologies alongside traditional parallel file systems on HPC clusters, is expected to rise the programming complexity on scientific applications aiming to take advantage of the increased-level of heterogeneity. In this work, we present uMMAP-IO, a user-level memory-mapped I/O implementation that simplifies data management on multi-tier storage subsystems. Compared to the memory-mapped I/O mechanism of the OS, our approach features per-allocation configurable settings (e.g., segment size) and transparently enables access to a diverse range of memory and storage technologies, such as the burst buffer I/O accelerators. Preliminary results indicate that uMMAP-IO provides at least 5-10x better performance on representative workloads in comparison with the standard memory-mapped I/O of the OS, and approximately 20-50% degradation on average compared to using conventional memory allocations without storage support up to 8192 processes.

Nowadays, the requirements of modern software demand a greater computing power;numerous scientific and engineering applications request an increase in data storage capacity, be able to exchange of information at high speeds, as well as a faster data processing and better memory management. the implementation of personal computers interconnected to form a cluster and the use of distributed/parallel file systems are presented as a highly suitable alternative in the solution of complex problems that require these resources as their needs grow. the present work shows the evaluation of OrangeFS as a tool to achieve high performance storage and massive parallel processing. It takes advantage of the capacity of the hard drives included in each node of the cluster through the virtual file system and the network bandwidth, instead of having to add a more expensive type of storage. the tests carried out in a cluster with CentOS show that stripping a large file into small objects and distributed in parallel to the I/O servers provides that upcoming read/write operations runs faster;In addition, the use of the message passing interface in the development and execution of applications allows to increase the parallelism of the data in terms of processing due to the intervention of the multicore processor in each of the clients. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.
