this track started in 2009 with opening remarks from the Chair observing that the computing cloud evolution depends on research efforts from the infrastructure providers creating next generation hardware that is service friendly, service developers that embed business service intelligence in the computing infrastructure to create distributed business workflow execution services and service providers who assure service delivery on a massive scale with global interoperability. the state of the art architecture and evolution of the cloud at that time was already increasing datacenter complexity by piling up new layers of management over the many layers that already exist. Since then, the scale of distributed applications and their management have taken a new dimension demanding tolerance to wild fluctuations both in workloads and available computing resource pools. there are many calls to go cloud native and architect applications using the many services provided by the cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services. On the other hand, there are also calls for avoiding vendor lock-in by going multi-cloud and becoming cloud agnostic. In this conference there is a new paper that proposes cloud agnostic approach with globally interoperable cloud network using private or public network while reducing the complexity of Virtual machine image motion across clouds. In addition, there are 7 papers describing advances in current distributed and cloud computing practices dealing with quality of service, adaptive algorithms and software defined network architectures.

With the rising demand on internet online services, more and more individuals and organizations migrate their data and services from local to geographically distributed internet data centers for reliability, management, and cost benefits. From internet data center operators' perspective, profit is one of the most significant factors which are to be taken into account and it is mainly determined by the quality of service and the electricity cost. In this work, we jointly take the diversity of time-varying electricity prices, the quality of service and the power usage effectiveness of data centers into consideration and propose a profit optimization framework that includes three important decisions: requests dispatching, the number of active servers and frequency adjustment. An efficient heuristic algorithm is then developed to provide internet data center operators with the advice on these decisions to achieve profit maximization for geographically distributed data centers. through extensive trace-driven simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our solution. © 2017 IEEE.

this paper presents a scalable design and implementation of the molecular docking application DOCK for a large-scale high performance computing system, the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer, which provisions a heterogeneous, manycore processor architecture that consists of management processing elements (MPEs) and clusters of computing processing elements (CPEs). the key innovation is a novel refactoring of DOCK on the CPEs. Optimization techniques for data redundancy minimization to fit data in cache, software-controlled prefetching into scratchpads, memory access coalescing, software caches, vectorization and loop unrolling are employed to improve the exploitation of the computational resources. For a single docking process, the refactored version using both the MPE and CPE cluster achieved 260x to 402x speedup compared against the original ported version using MPE only. To scale the DOCK to the full Sunway Taihulight system with 10,649,600 cores (including all MPE and CPE cores), we present an MPI communication domain partition scheme as well. For docking 9 million small compounds to a Zika virus target protein, we manage to scale to 131,072 MPEs, and 8,388,608 CPEs, with a total of 8,519,680 cores.

Pairwise sequence alignment is a common and fundamental task in Computational Biology, which constitutes the basis for many Bioinformatics applications. In the post-genomic era, there is an increasing demand to align long DNA sequences to discover their functions. In this paper, we propose a parallel pairwise alignment algorithm for large genomic sequences by recursively dividing the whole genomic sequences into small pieces, with an effective pruning strategy to reduce search and computation space. We implemented rigorous tests on a 4-core computer using real genomic sequences and artificially generated sequences. the results show that our implementation can achieve speedup 10.64 with 99.75% accuracy compared to the sequential algorithm. As far as we know, this is the first time that MBP (mega base-pairs) sequences are globally aligned with an affine gap penalty. © 2017 IEEE.

Today, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are important machine learning methods which are widely used in a variety of applications. As the emerging field of ANNs, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are often used for sequence-related applications. And Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is an improved RNN which contains complex computational logic. To achieve high accuracy, researchers always build large-scale LSTM networks which are time-consuming and power-consuming. thus the acceleration of LSTM networks, low power & energy consumption become the hot issues in today's research. In this paper, we present a hardware accelerator for the LSTM neural network layer based on FPGA Zedboard and use pipeline methods to parallelize the forward computing process. To optimize our implementation, we also use multiple methods including tiled matrix-vector multiplication, binary adder tree, and overlap of computation and data access. through the acceleration and optimization methods, our accelerator is power-efficient and has a better performance than ARM Cortex A9 processor and Intel Core i5 processor.

In the framework of human machine interaction systems enhancement, we focus throw this paper on human behavior analysis and action recognition. Human behavior is characterized by actions and reactions duality (movements, psychological modification, verbal and emotional expression. Its worth noting that many information are hidden behind gesture, sudden motion points trajectories and speeds, many research works reconstructed an information retrieval issues. In our work we will focus on motion extraction, tracking and action recognition using wavelet network approaches. Our contribution uses an analysis of human subtraction by Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and body movement through trajectory models of motion constructed from kalman filter. these models allow to remove the noise using the extraction of the main motion features and constitute a stable base to identify the evolutions of human *** modality is used to recognize a human action using wavelets of derived beta distributions approach. the proposed approach has been validated successfully on a subset of Kth and UCF sport database. © 2017 IEEE.

With the development of science and technologies, the locomotive is getting faster and faster and the load becomes heavier. the inertia and vertical force generated by the heavy train are increasing, and there are higher requirements of the braking and anti-slip control of the heavy train. In order to address the issues of safe and reliable anti-lock wheel control for heavy train operation, a sliding mode control based on recursive least square algorithm with enhanced forgotten factor is proposed. In this algorithm, the recursive least square method is exerted to seek optimal slip ratio. the wheel pair model is introduced to construct PI closed-loop observer to estimate unmeasured adhesive torque. On the one hand, the value of adhesion force torque can be used to calculate the actual adhesion coefficient which is an input of the algorithm for calculating the optimal slip rate;on the other hand, it can be also used to calculate the reference speed which is a necessary parameter of controller. the simulation result demonstrates the effect of real-time adjustment for braking torque, which guarantees the braking performance.

Handwriting is the most basic and natural behaviors in the teaching activities or homework. At present, various mobile or media system and devices are applied in the elementary education stage,but the input mode based on traditional keyboard has many obstacles which is not suitable for primary and middle school's students and teachers in or after class. Although there are lots of handwriting recognition software or solutions provided written services, they are always depending on recognition technologies or methods. these approaches were not the direct and natural way because of the complexity of Chinese characters and manual assistance, for example, selecting a item from numbers of alternatives in the input method. In this paper, a novel approach of constructing Chinese handwriting mobile system and data service oriented elementary education based on Android platform is proposed. A series of non-recognition document format processing and human-machine interaction methods supporting Chinese handwriting are implemented by means of the view layers structure, gesture classification and recognition, buffer mechanism for screen loading handwriting characters, log-structured storage and data synchronization. Students and Teachers can use the system in any education scenarios or activities by writing, editing, storing and sharing handwriting characters or other multimedia as writing as the real paper even simulating Chinese writing brush. Results show that system can be applied to teaching activities to archive handwriting easily and conveniently.

In this paper we present Foggy, an architectural framework and software platform based on Open Source technologies. Foggy orchestrates application workload, negotiates resources and supports IoT operations for multi-tier, distributed, heterogeneous and decentralized Cloud computing systems. Foggy is tailored for emerging domains such as 5G Networks and IoT, which demand resources and services to be distributed and located close to data sources and users following the Fog computing paradigm. Foggy provides a platform for infrastructure owners and tenants (i.e., application providers) offering functionality of negotiation, scheduling and workload placement taking into account traditional requirements (e.g. based on RAM, CPU, disk) and non-traditional ones (e.g. based on networking) as well as diversified constraints on location and access rights. Economics and pricing of resources can also be considered by the Foggy model in a near future. the ability of Foggy to find a trade-off between infrastructure owners' and tenants' needs, in terms of efficient and optimized use of the infrastructure while satisfying the application requirements, is demonstrated through three use cases in the video surveillance and vehicle tracking contexts.

Circuit switching is a way to minimize network latency and maximize network bandwidth when a limited number of source-and-destination pairs exchange messages which are predictable. Although there are a large number of studies of optical circuit switching (OCS) on HPC systems and datacenters, it is still not mature. In this context, we explore the use of electrical circuit switching (ECS) for the low-latency purpose on HPC systems and datacenters. ECS has the same link bandwidth as existing electrical packet switched networks, and inherits quick update of input-and-output connections from electrical switches. We develop a network topology generator for ECS to minimize the number of time slots optimized to target applications whose traffic patterns are predictable. By performing a quantitative discrete-event simulation, we present that an ideal ECS network outperforms counterpart EPS networks. Evaluation results show that the minimum necessary number of slots (MNNS) can be reduced to a small number in a generated topology while keeping resource amount less than that in a standard mesh network. © 2017 IEEE.
