Capabilities are a more scalable and adaptive access control approach compared with the conventional approaches such as ACLs, due to their being held and managed by users or agents in systems, but not the middleware. this feature makes capabilities more suitable in distributed environments that have dynamic populations. Treaties have been proposed to enhance the capability approach by introducing sequences of actions, such that treaties can capture characteristics of behaviours, and provide finer control over accesses. However there is a new problem brought by the behaviour modeling of treaties which is called duplication problem, which concerns preventing users from gaining unauthorised behaviour by duplicating treaties. In this paper we discuss this problem and propose three models of treaty systems that aim to solve the duplication problem.

With the rapid development of computer industry, the number of applications has been growing rapidly. Furthermore, even one application may correspond to different application scenarios which impose different requirements on performance or power. this trend raises the following question: how to design processors that best suit millions of application scenarios? It is impractical to design a dedicated processor for each single application scenario. A better alternative is to design a general-purpose processor architecture that can generate different architecture instances on demand. this paper proposes a novel CPU architecture called Elastic Architecture (EA), which can be dynamically configured into different architecture instances to suit different application scenarios. By employing reconfigurable architecture components (instruction set, branch predictor, data path, memory hierarchy, concurrency, status & control, and so on), the EA can achieve considerable elasticities on each application, which enables the EA to meet the performance or power requirements associated with each application scenario. We validate the effectiveness of the EA on a prototype implementation called Sim-EA. We demonstrate that Sim-EA exhibits large elasticities over 26 benchmarks of SPEC CPU2000, enabling Sim-EA to reduce the average energy-delay product (EDP) by 31.14% of a fixed baseline architecture. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2012.

Peer-to-peer conference is an interactive multi-users conferencing application that improves the issues of concentrated loading, single-point failure and expensive infrastructure cost for the traditional centralized conference model, according to the conference resource shared by each other. the benefit of non-centralized system can be achieved by using P2P-SIP. However, unlike the traditional centralized architecture, the conference resource is provided by each peer user. How to search the heterogeneous resource efficiently is a key point in the dynamic and distributed environment. thus, we proposed a multi-constraint resource search algorithm for P2P-SIP conferencing services. In the full distributed environment, users can search a usable resource to reduce the call-setup time and save the conferencing cost according to the conferencing scale and the quality requirements. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2012.

the purpose of this paper is to design and implement a hybrid compiler that combines JOMP's directives with javar's annotations in order to obtain a more performing compiler. this is an original approach and consists of pooling the advantages of those two compilers while fixing some of their issues. However the achievement of this aim is facing the issue of the difference of implementation of these two compilers because JOMP is implemented in Java while javar is implemented in C language. We propose to entirely reimplement javar in Java by using JavaCC. thereafter, we present the implementation of the hybrid compiler. In the experiments, we propose to parallelize the matrix sort program by using this hybrid compiler. the results of experiments and the mathematical demonstration lead us to state that dealing with this hybrid compiler gives performances better or equal to the best one between javar and JOMP.

Group check pointing is a fix between global check pointing and log-based recovery. It features both reduced runtime overhead and localized recovery effect for improving the fault-tolerance performance of large-scale distributed systems. However, parallel programs cannot efficiently benefit from this strategy, as they often involve synchronous or semi-synchronous interactions that incur extra idling delays between processes as well as between process groups. this paper presents an analytical study on such delays and the corresponding delay optimization strategies. Observing that certain parallel programs exhibit patterns of "synchronization groups", we develop a Synchronization-Induced Checkpoint protocol that manages checkpoints around such groups. the protocol keeps advantages of ordinary group check pointing, and meanwhile minimizes the costs of synchronization-induced delays. We also broadly categorize the known synchronization patterns and establish their relations with suitable checkpoint strategies for parallel programs.

In light of the challenges of effectively managing Big Data, we are witnessing a gradual shift towards the increasingly popular Linked Open Data (LOD) paradigm. LOD aims to impose a machine-readable semantic layer over structured as well as unstructured data and hence automate some data analysis tasks that are not designed for computers. the convergence of Big Data and LOD is, however, not straightforward: the semantic layer of LOD and the Big Data large scale storage do not get along easily. Meanwhile, the sheer data size envisioned by Big Data denies certain computationally expensive semantic technologies, rendering the latter much less efficient than their performance on relatively small data sets. In this paper, we propose a mechanism allowing LOD to take advantage of existing large-scale data stores while sustaining its "semantic" nature. We demonstrate how RDF-based semantic models can be distributed across multiple storage servers and we examine how a fundamental semantic operation can be tuned to meet the requirements on distributed and parallel data processing. Our future work will focus on stress test of the platform in the magnitude of tens of billions of triples, as well as comparative studies in usability and performance against similar offerings. © 2012 ACM.

the IEEE 802.11p standard specifies the PHY and MAC layer operations for transmitting and receiving periodic broadcast messages for vehicular safety. Many studies have identified issues with the CSMA based IEEE 802.11p MAC at high densities of devices, mainly reflected by low packet reception rate. In this paper, we make an interesting observation that with increasing density, the IEEE 802.11p MAC tends towards an ALOHA-type behavior where concurrent transmissions by close-by devices are not prevented. this behavior can lead to poor packet reception rate even for vehicles in close neighborhood. Many efforts have been made to address the IEEE 802.11p MAC issues to provide better performance for DSRC safety applications, including the introduction of Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) algorithm to ETSI standards in Europe. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the proposed DCC algorithm and observe that the nominal parameters in DCC are unsuitable in many scenarios. Using transmit power control as an example, we develop a simple rule within the DCC framework that can significantly improve the safety packet reception performance with increasing densities. the DCC algorithms are fully compatible with the IEEE 802.11p standards and asynchronous in nature. A parallel approach to handle high device densities is a slotted synchronous MAC, where time is slotted based on GPS synchronization and each transmitter contends for a set of recurring time slots (or channels) with periodicity matching the required safety message periodicity. As compared to the per-packet based contention scheme as in CSMA defined in IEEE 802.11, such a scheme is much better suited for periodic safety broadcast. In this paper, we design a standard compliant TDM overlay on top of the MAC layer that can significantly improve the packet reception performance. this article presents the realization of a new energy self-powered sensor node. the wireless node is supplied by 10 μW of electrical power and is able to send three measured values in intervals of 80s. the power supply is carried out with a MEMS-based piezoelectric vibration converter. A specially developed ASIC for this type of generator takes over the energy management. the wireless connection to a base station is established by a microcontroller predestinated for energy autonomous applications in conjunction with a standard IEEE 802.15.4 RF-frontend. the used Route Under MAC wireless protocol is specifically designed for energy-saving operations. the protocol supports the IPv6/6LoWPAN standard whereby multiple sensor nodes can be integrated in a wired network. © 2012 IEEE.

Statistical performance tuning of a parallel Monte Carlo (MC) radiative transfer code for ocean color (OC) applications is presented. A low observed-to-peak performance ratio due to highly sparse computations is compensated by online and offline tuning techniques based on a statistical indicator of products accuracy. Run-time adaptive control employs the accuracy indicator to set up two complementary tuning criteria: one general to MC computations and the other specific to OC applications. the same accuracy indicator is also used for pre-execution tuning of a threshold parameter. Numerical simulations of real case scenarios showed that the proposed methods consistently led to faster runs, while satisfying application accuracy requirements. Specifically, speed-ups range from 2.17 to 7.44 times when compared with the un-optimized version of the MC code. the applied techniques are orthogonal to parallelization, so that the reported performance gains are further amplified by parallel speed-ups.

Mining@Home was recently designed as a distributed architecture for running data mining applications according to the "volunteer computing" paradigm. Mining@Home already proved its efficiency and scalability when used for the discovery of frequent itemsets from a transactional database. However, it can also be adopted in several different scenarios, especially in those where the overall application can be divided into distinct jobs that may be executed in parallel, and input data can be reused, which naturally leads to the use of data cachers. this paper describes the architecture and implementation of the Mining@Home system and evaluates its performance for the execution of ensemble learning applications. In this scenario, multiple learners are used to compute models from the same input data, so as to extract a final model with stronger statistical accuracy. Performance evaluation on a real network, reported in the paper, confirms the efficiency and scalability of the framework. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
