the selection of mates in an evolutionary algorithm can significantly influence the exploration and the exploitation abilities of the search process. Currently there are several strategies to guide the mate selection or to restrict the mating pool. the aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of a fitness guided mate selection strategy and of a collaboration strategy between population elements which use different mating rules. the behavior is analyzed empirically for mate selection in differential evolution algorithms by considering that the population is divided in two subpopulations characterized by different mating rules. the dynamics of these subpopulations sizes is also theoretically analyzed.

Various methodologies to model and analyze timed and hybrid systems using SAL are reported. We assume that the system is specified as a network of timed/hybrid automata with synchronized transitions and urgency. We show how to translate the system into a SAL model with the time domain being either discrete or dense, and the clocks being either saturated or unsaturated. Depending on these choices, various tools provided by SAL to model check reachability properties over the system are used to establish safety properties of timed systems. We profile the performance of these tools with a comparative study.

Grid-based platforms were recently build all over the world to satisfy the huge needs of computational power and storage capacities for Earth observation activities. Training activities in the field are not following these developing activities, resulting a big gap between the field request for specialists and the labor market offer. In this context, a platform for high education and training in Earth observation using the latest achievements in information technologies is a clear need at least for the scientific community. this paper presents the concepts behind a newly established Grid-based platform that offers learning objects based on hands-on experiments for Earth observation community.

the aim of this paper is to approach the problem of improving the design of an object oriented software system, by identifying the appropriate refactorings. It is well known that improving the quality of software systems design is an important issue during the evolution of object oriented software systems. this improvement can be achieved by refactoring the software system in order to improve its internal structure, but without altering the external behavior of the code. In this paper we introduce a hierarchical divisive clustering algorithm for automatic identification of refactorings that improve the internal structure of a software system. We evaluate our approach using JHotDraw case study and a real software system, emphasizing its advantages in comparison with existing similar approaches.

We present a distributed video proxy-cache system that is able to adapt the number of running nodes depending on the client request patterns and available storage and computational resources. Cache related operations are performed with regard to the utility values of the stored objects. We propose the use of a new utility formula which considers a number of object characteristics. this formula is fine tuned by using a genetic algorithm for determining the best approach to weight those characteristics so that the yielded byte hit rate of the system is maximal. Also, a new approach that uses the standard deviation of the utility values for the cached objects, to increase or decrease the number of active nodes within the proposed system, is presented.

Whatever the circumstances, a complete transparency and a quick response time are expected by the users of a grid even when failures occur. To fulfill these two requirements, adaptive control mechanisms have to be proposed, on one hand to cope efficiently with the dynamic changes of the computing capacity of the grid (even if these changes are unpredictable) and, on the other hand to distribute the tasks among the resources in an efficient way (dynamic load balancing). In a hierarchical grid, both issues can be addressed using a common set of agreement services built on top of a consensus building block. the major aim of this paper is to investigate the benefits and the limits of this approach through some performance evaluations.

Communication flows in distributed systems often present a poor performance, because they are unaware of each other and end up competing for the same bottleneck resources. A solution to this problem consists of scheduling the communication flows in order to optimize some performance metric. In this paper we study the scheduling of two communication flows over multiple disjoint paths, such that the maximum completion time (makespan) is minimized. Each flow is composed of a large number of identical packets of the same type. the paths are aware of the packet types and have different transmission times for each type. We consider the objectives of minimizing the makespan and the weighted sum of completion times. We also consider some error-correcting issues, as well as the possibility of dropping the packet ordering constraints.

Motivated by ideas of software measurement, the area of process measurement has attracted attention in recent time. Numerous process metrics have been proposed to measure (often structural) properties of business *** this paper, we propose heatmaps, a visualization technique for high-dimensional data originally used in genetics, for visualizing the process metric values of business process collections. So, new insights into the distribution of the metric values among the processes could be gained. Additionally, we use clustering for analyzing (1) the correlations between different process metrics and (2) finding (structurally) similar processes among business process collections. Our approach has been successfully applied to the SAP Reference Model processes.

the contribution of this paper is to propose a simple approach for the design and implementation of code mobility using mobile software agents. the approach is demonstrated by its application to standard code mobility paradigms. We start from existing formalizations of code mobility paradigms and show how they can be used to derive standard UML sequence diagrams that describe agent interactions and migration. then we show how these diagrams can guide a prototype JADE-based implementation of the client-server code mobility paradigm.

We propose a modeling framework for generating security protocol specifications. the generated protocol specifications rely on the use of a sequential and a semantical component. the first component defines protocol properties such as preconditions, effects, message sequences and it is developed as a WSDL-S specification. the second component defines the semantic aspects corresponding to the messages included in the first component by the use of ontological constructions and it is developed as an OWL-based specification. Our approach was validated on 13 protocols from which we mention: the IS09798 protocol, the CCITTX.509 data transfer protocol and the Kerberos symmetric key protocol.
