As a result of the fast development of technologies and diversity of requirements, complexity exists not only in a system itself but also in the development process and environment. The complexity in the development process comes from specialization and concurrency, and a Digital Twin (DT) has the potential to mitigate these issues. We hope, during the process of building a DT, the accidental complexity can be minimized by application of model-based systems engineering and the Multi-Paradigm modeling (MPM). In this paper, we give an example of the process of building a DT combined with a process model. Our long term goal is to model the development of various DTs to identify the commonalities and variations across multiple DTs.

Trace-based timing analysis is a technique, which assesses the software timing requirements against the timing information contained in so-called traces, which are files collected from simulation tools or by running the actual systems. In this experience report, we describe our joint effort with Volvo Group Trucks Technology in designing and developing a round-trip, model-based framework for the trace-based timing analysis of automotive software. To validate the proposed framework, we use a mix of observational and descriptive methods. In particular, we validate the correctness and feasibility of the proposed approach using the Washer Wiper automotive functionality. Eventually, we discuss lessons learnt, the benefits and limitations of the proposed framework.

We present the integration of two performance analysis and refactoring techniques based on probabilistic modelling and performance antipatterns. The integrated approach obtained in this way allows software engineers to verify performance properties at both code-level and system architecture-level, supporting the selection of refactoring actions when a performance requirement violation occurs. Monitoring the effect of changes in the system's code and architecture gives a better overview of (and control over) the system's performance objectives. We demonstrate the application of the approach in a case study involving the performance analysis and refactoring of a foreign exchange service-based system that comprises a combination of internal components and third-party services.

model-Based systems engineering (MBSE) aims to provide a systems engineering methodology that leverages modeling methods to support design, analysis, verification, and validation of systems. As such, methodologies for MBSE have to be able to integrate heterogeneous engineering models from a variety of domains, including mechanical engineering, product design, legislation, and many more. Most research in this area usually only focuses on general system descriptions of a step in the system development process, without providing any interdisciplinary or interprocess connections. Thus, the models created by the domain experts are often unconnected and not suited for automated model transformations. We present a method to integrate abstract system descriptions in the systems modeling Language (SysML) with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models, which are not only the primary model for geometrical hardware descriptions but also the starting point of most process chains in the context of virtual product development. The transformations of our method are realized in a plug-in for the MagicDraw modeling environment and support to generate parameters of a parameter and constraint CAD modeling approach from a SysML model. This automates the integration of abstract system descriptions with design models to foster a coherent virtual product development.

Energy consumption is becoming a major subject when designing, developing and running programs. Most developers code and run their applications in an energy oblivious manner, mostly because of a lack of energy-related knowledge about their system. This problem also exists in the realm of executable domain-specific modeling languages, where end-users create models conforming to a given meta-model and execute them with little knowledge about their operational semantic and related energy consumption. In this work, we propose a domain-specific language for decorating meta-models of executable languages with platform-specific energy estimation formulas. We also extend the GEMOC execution engine to dynamically perform energy estimations on any executable model conforming to the decorated meta-model. The energy estimation model defined can then be easily adapted to other models and platforms, without requiring any measurement tooling or knowledge from the enduser.

This paper presents a model driven tool for both requirements and hardware engineering. For the requirements engineering, the tool offers many functionalities such as classifring the requirements and linking them with the hardware system elements. For the Hardware engineering, the tool offers different levels of the EE architecture design: Three levels of modelling are used from the more abstract to the more detailed: Function level, Architecture level and Real Component (physical) level. The tool proposes libraries to enable the reuse of hardware components for the different design levels. The tool offers also a list of automatic generation modules such as the automatic generation of the documentation either for the Requirements or the Hardware model and the automatic generation of the BOM specification from the Hardware model. In this paper, we will present a specific use of the tool for the automotive domain. We will identify different requirements imposed by the automotive domain and show how the tool has contributed to satisfy these requirements.

The ability for systems to make decisions by themselves is increasing with advances in different areas of AI such as machine learning and optimisation techniques for autonomous systems among other. Humans are handing over more decisions to systems that provide no explanations for their judgements unless they are enabled explicitly in their design. Trust based on a program being well written and tested correctly is not appropriate for AI-based autonomous systems. Unlike traditional software, this new software increasingly exhibit emergent behaviours making it unpredictable due to unexpected situations. Self-explanation is sometimes implemented, tracking decisions to give explanations to users. A more consistent, proven approach to self-explanation would be needed for making trustable systems. The paper proposes a research agenda to define an architecture to enable self-explanation for autonomous decision-making systems. The approach will be model-driven to facilitate reuse, the rapid development of tools and suitable abstractions for demonstrating concepts. The architecture will be informed by existing research in provenance ontology and model version research. The evaluation of the architecture is expected to be done using two case studies. The first will implement self-explanation as a primary concern in the building of a system. The second case will attempt to fit self-explanation to an existing system.

Developing firmware for ultra-thin Internet of Things (IoT) devices is challenging due to exceedingly limited hardware resources, increasing functional requirements, and rigorous time-to-market constraints prevalent in industry. model-driven approaches are often used to tackle these challenges. In the IoT and embedded systems domains, highly specialized metamodels are employed in systems engineering, including the development of firmware. However, these metamodels exist in isolation, limiting the capabilities of model-driven activities. In this paper, we show how firmware synthesis for ultra-thin IoT devices can be enhanced by model integration which is realized by a novel unifying modeling language that aims at integrating the large number of dedicated metamodels. We demonstrate our approach with an industrial use case where we synthesize parts of the firmware for one of the sensor peripherals of an IoT device along with contracts enabling static code verification.

In the context of model-driven Development (MDD) models can be executed by interpretation or by the translation of models into existing programming languages, often by code generation. This work presents Live-UMLRT, a tool that supports live modeling of UML-RT models when they are executed by code generation. Live-UMLRT is entirely independent of any live programming support offered by the target language. This independence is achieved with the help of a model transformation which equips the model with support for, e.g., debugging and state transfer both of which are required for live modeling. A subsequent code generation then produces a self-reflective program that allows changes to the model elements at runtime (through synchronization of design and runtime models). We have evaluated Live-UMLRT on several use cases. The evaluation shows that (1) code generation, transformation, and state transfer can be carried out with reasonable performance, and (2) our approach can apply model changes to the running execution faster than the standard approach that depends on the live programming support of the target language.

Testing early reduces the cost of the validation process. model-driven Testing promotes the creation of the tests at the model level and their transformation into code which can be executed. However, we miss an empirical evaluation on the efficiency of generating tests designed on the service-based component models compared to implementing them based on the generated code. In this paper, we evaluate if one shall generate tests from platform-independent models or implement them on the generated code. We consider service-based component models and a case study modeling and generating the code of a platoon of vehicles. Our experimentation on that first case study confirms that generating tests from the service-based models is easier compared to implementing them on the generated code. Moreover, efficiency of the tests of both approaches is similar, considering code coverage and mutation analysis.
