Several recent studies have introduced lightweight versions of Java: reduced languages in which complex features like threads and reflection are dropped to enable rigorous arguments about key properties such as type safety. We carry this process a step further, omitting almost all features of the full language (including interfaces and even assignment) to obtain a small calculus, Featherweight Java, for which rigorous proofs are not only possible but *** Java bears a similar relation to full Java as the lambda-calculus does to languages such as ML and Haskell. It offers a similar computational “feel,” providing classes, methods, fields, inheritance, and dynamic typecasts, with a semantics closely following Java's. A proof of type safety for Featherweight Java thus illustrates many of the interesting features of a safety proof for the full language, while remaining pleasingly compact. The syntax, type rules, and operational semantics of Featherweight Java fit on one page, making it easier to understand the consequences of extensions and *** an illustration of its utility in this regard, we extend Featherweight Java with generic classes in the style of GJ (Bracha, Odersky, Stoutamire, and Wadler) and sketch a proof of type safety. The extended system formalizes for the first time some of the key features of GJ.

Object-oriented programming languages allow inter-object aliasing. Although necessary to construct linked data structures and networks of interacting objects, aliasing is problematic in that an aggregate object's state can change via an alias to one of its components, without the aggregate being aware of any *** types form a static type system that indicates object ownership. This provides a flexible mechanism to limit the visibility of object references and restrict access paths to objects, thus controlling a system's dynamic topology. The type system is shown to be sound, and the specific aliasing properties that a system's object graph satisfies are formulated and proven invariant for well-typed programs.

Image processing pipelines combine the challenges of stencil computations and stream programs. They are composed of large graphs of different stencil stages, as well as complex reductions, and stages with global or data-dependent access patterns. Because of their complex structure, the performance difference between a naive implementation of a pipeline and an optimized one is often an order of magnitude. Efficient implementations require optimization of both parallelism and locality, but due to the nature of stencils, there is a fundamental tension between parallelism, locality, and introducing redundant recomputation of shared *** present a systematic model of the tradeoff space fundamental to stencil pipelines, a schedule representation which describes concrete points in this space for each stage in an image processing pipeline, and an optimizing compiler for the Halide image processing language that synthesizes high performance implementations from a Halide algorithm and a schedule. Combining this compiler with stochastic search over the space of schedules enables terse, composable programs to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of real image processing pipelines, and across different hardware architectures, including multicores with SIMD, and heterogeneous CPU+GPU execution. From simple Halide programs written in a few hours, we demonstrate performance up to 5x faster than hand-tuned C, intrinsics, and CUDA implementations optimized by experts over weeks or months, for image processing applications beyond the reach of past automatic compilers.

This paper describes a lightweight yet powerful approach for writing distributed applications using shared variables. Our approach, called SHAREHOLDER, is inspired by the flexible and intuitive model of information access common to the World Wide Web. The distributed applications targeted by our approach all share a weak consistency model and loose transaction semantics, similar to a user's model of accessing email, bulletin boards, chat rooms, etc. on the Internet. The SHAREHOLDER infrastructure has several advantages. Its highly object-oriented view of shared variables simplifies their initialization and configuration. A shared variable's distribution mechanism is specified through an associated configuration object, and the programmer does not need to write any extra code to implement the sharing mechanism. These configuration objects can be initialized at run-time, allowing tremendous flexibility in dynamic control of distribution of shared variables. Finally, the programmer can treat shared variables and local variables interchangeably, thus simplifying conversion of a serial application into a distributed application.

We postulate a general computing model and investigate the design and implementation of systems in the postulated environment. The model is drawn from our interpretation of the writings of John von Newmann 1 and others. Its central concept is an abstraction of the capability of all digital computers to modify cells contents that represent addresses of other cells. We discuss three formulations of the model; namely, a “programming language” formulation using vectors, pointers, and move operators, an “emulator” formulation extending the first formulation to include control structure and execution semantics, and a “mathematical” formulation. The proposed model is specifically intended for the interactive design and implementation of software (and also hardware) computer systems. The completeness and the hierarchial nature of the descriptions based on the model allow those descriptions to serve as simulation models and documentation for the complete system being described or for any well-defined part of the system.

Micro patterns are similar to design patterns, except that micro patterns are stand at a lower, closer to the implementation, level of abstraction. Micro patterns are also unique in that they are mechanically recognizable, since each such pattern can be expressed as a formal condition on the structure of a *** paper presents a catalog of 27 micro-patterns defined on Java classes and interfaces. The catalog captures a wide spectrum of common programming practices, including a particular and (intentionally restricted) use of inheritance, immutability, data management and wrapping, restricted creation, and emulation of procedural-, modular-, and even functional- programming paradigms with object oriented constructs. Together, the patterns present a set of prototypes after which a large portion of all Java classes and interfaces are modeled. We provide empirical indication that this portion is as high as 75%.A statistical analysis of occurrences of micro patterns in a large software corpus, spanning some 70,000 Java classes drawn from a rich set of application domains, shows, with high confidence level that the use of these patterns is not random. These results indicate consciousness and discernible design decisions, which are sustained in the software evolution. With high confidence level, we can also show that the use of these patterns is tied to the specification, or the purpose, that the software *** traceability, abundance and the statistical significance of micro pattern occurrence raise the hope of using the classification of software into these patterns for a more founded appreciation of its design and code quality.

Tools for the generation of code from model descriptions are valuable in helping developers maintain consistency between a model and its implementation. In this paper, we describe a new method for generating Java implementation code from UML diagrams. Our method accepts UML diagrams specified at a higher-level than current tools, and places fewer constraints on the supported UML constructs, like multiple generalizations and association classes. Unlike current tools, it generates implementation code that shields system implementers from the low-level details of how associations and other UML constructs are mapped to Java. Furthermore, it supports the modular design of systems according to concerns[2, 10] by being able to generate code from a set of related UML diagrams. While our discussion is focused on the special problem of generating Java implementation code, the issues discussed in this paper are applicable more generally to object-oriented implementation languages.

The combination of Ada® used as a programming language and as a program design language (PDL) can effectively help automate the enforcement of design methods and the creation of design documentation. This paper discusses how design automation can be applied successfully to the development of complex Ada systems under DOD-STD-2167. In particular, the use of an Ada-based PDL as the basis for capturing design decisions is examined. The paper also explores the implications of such an approach in the context of integrated tool support, namely, the ability to produce documents automatically, to enforce project-specific design rules, to provide interactive traversing between design and implementation, and to facilitate traceability.

This paper describes research in applications of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) as captured in the AspectJ™ language. In particular, it compares object-oriented and aspect-oriented designs and implementations of role *** 1, 2, and 3 provide background information on role models, object-oriented role model implementations, and aspect-oriented programming, respectively. New aspect-oriented designs for role models are explored in sections 4, 5, and *** base reference for this exploration is the Role Object pattern. Although useful for role models, this pattern introduces some problems at the implementation level, namely object schizophrenia, significant interface maintenance, and no support for role composition. Our research has resulted in alternative aspect-oriented designs that alleviate some of these *** 7 discusses how an agent framework that implements role models has been partially reengineered with aspects. The reengineering addressed concerns that are orthogonal or cross cut both the core and the role behavior. The aspect oriented redesign significantly reduced code tangling, overall method and module count, and total lines of code. These results and other conclusions are presented in section 8.

The general purpose mathematical programming systems have greatly changed in the last few years and the aim of such codes is no longer to give access to an efficient algorithm but to integrate the solution of linear programming problems into a loop including the generation of the problem, its solution, its post optimal analysis and the edition of an output report of the results. The link between all these operations is done through a so-called control language *** these aspects are more or less the same from one code to another but we think that new approaches should be brought into their design, organization, and implementation. The development cost of such programs being very high, usually in the order of 15 to 30 man years, it is necessary to provide facilities in order to:- offer suitable users and programming languages;- have a modular design;- handle memory allocation in a semi-optimal way;- make modifications and extensions easier; and- facilitate day to day programmers tasks.I shall present, in the following pages, the objectives that we had in mind when we began to implement these facilities within the large scale mathematical programming system OPHELIE 2 which we developed for the CDC 6600.
