Customizing host IDE for non-programming users of pure embedded DSLs: A case study

Pure embedding as an implementation strategy of domain-specific languages (DSLs) benefits from low implementation costs. On the other hand, it introduces undesired syntactic noise that impedes involvement of non-programming domain experts. Due to this, pure embedded DSLs are generally not intended for, nor used by, non-programmers. In this work, we try to challenge this state by experimenting with inexpensive customizations of the host IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to reduce the negative impact of syntactic noise. We present several techniques and recommendations based on standard IDE features (e.g., file templates, code folding, etc.) that aim to reduce syntactic noise and generally improve the user experience with pure embedded DSLs. The techniques are presented using a NetBeans IDE case study. The goal of the proposed techniques is to improve the user experience with pure embedded DSLs with a focus on the involvement of non-programming domain experts (or non-programmers in general). The proposed techniques were evaluated using a controlled experiment. The experiment compared a group using Ruby and non-modified RubyMine IDE versus a group using Java and NetBeans IDE customized to use the proposed techniques. Experiment results indicate that even inexpensive host IDE customizations can significantly alleviate issues caused by the syntactic noise: Java with its inflexible syntax performed better than Ruby with its concise syntax. Software Product Lines (SPLs) are an approach to reuse in-the-large that models a set of closely related software systems in terms of commonalities and variabilities. design patterns are best practices for addressing recurring design problems in object-oriented source code. In the practice of implementing SPL, instances of certain design patterns are employed to handle variability, which makes these "variability-aware design patterns" a best practice for SPL design. However, currently there is no dedicated method for proactively developing SPLs using design patterns suitable for realizing variable functionality. In this paper, we present a method to perform generative SPL development with design patterns. We use role models to capture design patterns and their relation to a variability model. We further allow mapping of individual design pattern roles to (parts of) implementation elements to be generated (e.g., classes, methods) and check the conformance of the realization with the specification of the pattern. We provide definitions for the variability-aware versions of the design patterns Observer, Strategy, Template Method and Composite. Furthermore, we support generation of realization's in Java, C++ and UML class diagrams utilizing annotative, compositional and transformational variability realization mechanisms. Hence, we support proactive development of SPLs using design patterns to apply best practices for the realization of variability. Software languages have always been an essential component of model-driven engineering. Their importance and popularity has been on the rise thanks to language workbenches, language-oriented development and other methodologies that enable us to quickly and easily create new languages specific for each domain. Unfortunately, language design is largely a form of art and has resisted most attempts to turn it into a form of science or engineering. In this paper we borrow concepts, techniques and principles from the domain of persuasive technology, or wider yet, design with intent - which was developed as a way to influence users behaviour for social and environmental benefit. Similarly, we claim, software language designers can make conscious choices in order to influence the behaviour of language users. The paper describes a process of extracting design components from 24 books of eight categories (dragon books, parsing techniques, compiler construction, compiler design, language implementation, language documentation, programming languages, software languages), as well as from the original set of design with Intent cards and papers on DSL design. The resulting language design card toolkit can be used by DSL designers to cover important design decisions and make them with more confidence.

The Racket doctrine tells developers to create languages (as libraries) to narrow the gap between the terminology of a problem domain and general programming constructs. This pearl illustrates this doctrine with the creation of a relatively simple domain-specific language for editing videos. To produce the video proceedings of a conference, for example, video professionals traditionally use "non-linear" GUI editors to manually edit each talk, despite the repetitive nature of the process. As it turns out, the task of video editing naturally splits into a declarative phase and an imperative rendering phase at the end. Hence it is natural to create a functional-declarative language for the first phase, which reduces a lot of manual labor. The implementation of this user-facing DSL, dubbed Video, utilizes a second, internal DSL to implement the second phase, which is an interface to a general, low-level C library. Finally, we inject type checking into our Video language via another DSL that supports programming in the language of type formalisms. In short, the development of the video editing language cleanly demonstrates how the Racket doctrine naturally leads to the creation of language hierarchies, analogous to the hierarchies of modules found in conventional functional languages.

High school students often struggle to find the motivation to learn to program. Music can be a powerful motivator for these students, but existing tools that combine music production with programming often fail to meaningfully engage students with core computer science concepts. Sonification Blocks was created to shift the focus back toward big ideas in programming. Sonification Blocks is a programming language for data sonification, the process of creating audio algorithms and controlling them with streams of data. Its implementation as a block-based language with clear, interactive data visualizers allows high-school-aged learners to develop computational literacy. Furthermore, the act of manipulating sound parameters with data streams that are controlled through body motion may help connect learners with powerful ideas in programming and data science.

To design and implement a program, programmers choose analogies and metaphors to explain and understand programmatic concepts. In source code, they manifest themselves as a particular choice of names. During program comprehension, reading such names is an important starting point to understand the meaning of modules and guide the exploration process. On the one hand, understanding a program in depth bylooking for names that suggest a particular analogy can be a time-consuming process. On the other hand, a lack of awareness which concepts are present and which analogies have been chosen can lead to modularity issues, such as redundancy and architectural drift if concepts are misaligned with respect to the current module decomposition. In this work-in-progress paper, we propose to integrate first-class concepts into the programming environment. We assign meaning to names by labeling them with a color corresponding to the metaphor or analogy this name was derived from. We hypothesize that aggregating labels upwards along the module hierarchy helps to understand how concepts are distributed across the program, collecting names belonging to a specific concept helps programmers to recognize which metaphor has been chosen, and presenting relations between concepts can summarize complex interactions between program parts. We argue that continuous feedback and awareness of how names are grouped into concepts and where they are located can help preventing modularity issues and ease program comprehension. As a first step towards an implementation, we define criteria that help to detect names belonging to the same *** then investigate how techniques from natural language processing can be re-used and modified to compute an initial concept allocation with respect to these criteria. Parallel programming platforms are heterogeneous and incompatible;a common approach is needed to free programmers from platforms' technical intricacies, allowing flexible execution in which sequential and parallel executions produce identical results. The execution and programming model of an embedded flexible language (EFL), which implement this common approach, are presented. EFL allows embedding of deterministic parallel code blocks into a sequential program, written in any host language. EFL programming model constructs are presented. An EFL implementation of the Reduce Parallel design Pattern is presented. With EFL we aim to implement safe and efficient parallel execution, in software, hardware, or both. Consequences of Rice's theorem regarding parallel computation are discussed. These consequences severely restrict what can be checked at compile time. An approach is proposed for circumventing these restrictions.

Go is a production-level statically typed programming language whose design features explicit message-passing primitives and lightweight threads, enabling (and encouraging) programmers to develop concurrent systems where components interact through communication more so than by lock-based shared memory concurrency. Go can only detect global deadlocks at runtime, but provides no compile-time protection against all too common communication mismatches or partial deadlocks. This work develops a static verification framework for liveness and safety in Go programs, able to detect communication errors and partial deadlocks in a general class of realistic concurrent programs, including those with dynamic channel creation, unbounded thread creation and recursion. Our approach infers from a Go program a faithful representation of its communication patterns as a behavioural type. By checking a syntactic restriction on channel usage, dubbed fencing, we ensure that programs are made up of finitely many different communication patterns that may be repeated infinitely many times. This restriction allows us to implement a decision procedure for liveness and safety in types which in turn statically ensures liveness and safety in Go programs. We have implemented a type inference and decision procedures in a tool-chain and tested it against publicly available Go programs. © 2017 acm.

Motivation: Even though many studies examine the energy efficiency of hardware and embedded systems, those that investigate the energy consumption of software applications are still limited, and mostly focused on mobile applications. As modern applications become even more complex and heterogeneous a need arises for methods that can accurately assess their energy consumption. Goal: Measure the energy consumption and run-time performance of commonly used programming tasks implemented in different programming languages and executed on a variety of platforms to help developers to choose appropriate implementation platforms. Method: Obtain measurements to calculate the Energy Delay Prod- uct, a weighted function that takes into account a task's energy consumption and run-time performance. We perform our tests by calculating the Energy Delay Product of 25 programming tasks, found in the Rosetta Code Repository, which are implemented in 14 programming languages and run on three different computer platforms, a server, a laptop, and an embedded system. Results: Compiled programming languages are outperforming the interpreted ones for most, but not for all tasks. C, C#, and JavaScript are on average the best performing compiled, semi-compiled, and interpreted programming languages for the Energy Delay Product, and Rust appears to be well-placed for i/o-intensive operations, such as file handling. We also find that a good behaviour, energy- wise, can be the result of clever optimizations and design choices in seemingly unexpected programming languages.

This paper describes the design, implementation and preliminary evaluation of a computing component for a three-week writing-intensive introductory program at a liberal arts college. Specific curricular recommendations are presented that could have a direct, positive impact if adopted in similar courses. A two-pronged approach involving a faculty-led HTML workshop, along with student-led contextualized coding studios, was employed. Computing Unplugged activities were used, including a novel Page Rank Unplugged networking activity. An analysis of attitude surveys shows the program positively changed students attitudes about enjoyment solving CS problems, but potentially reinforced the misconception that CS is just learning programming languages.
