A prototype toolchain for the parametric modeling of space vehicles is presented. The toolchain processes an XML file with the description of the space vehicle down to the seventh layer of the product breakdown structure. The reference frame hierarchy of the space vehicle, its 3D rendering, and mass properties are generated. The toolchain generates a Modelica multibody model of the space vehicle that is then converted by functional mock-up unit for co-simulation. The prototype toolchain has been implemented and tested in Wolfram Mathematica and Wolfram SystemModeler. Future plans are to implement the toolchain with open-source means and make it available to the space mission community. © 2021, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa. Advancing battery materials is crucial for sustainable infrastructure, EVs and renewable energy storage. By achieving polynomial scaling for exact electronic structure simulations of materials, quantum computing could emerge as an invaluable tool in this field. In this work, we address two fundamental aspects related to the application of quantum algorithms to lithium diffusion in solid state electrolytes, which have the potential to significantly improve safety and performance of current battery technologies. First of all, we discuss the need for the higher level of accuracy provided by quantum computing. Classical computational methods routinely applied to compute the properties of solid state electrolytes are based on semi-local approximations of density functional theory (DFT). Considering cluster models representative of the properties of the bulk Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 (LGPS) electrolyte, we benchmark several functionals, including state-of-the-art hybrid approximations and compare the results to high-level wavefunction methods. The classical results for lithium diffusion barriers exhibit a variability exceeding the chemical accuracy threshold required for experimentally relevant precision, underscoring the necessity for exact quantum solutions as a reference. Secondly, we perform quantum simulations for lithium diffusion barriers using small active spaces of the cluster models and use those results to extrapolate the minimal resources required for a full simulation of bulk LGPS. Specifically, the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) with a quantum number preserving ansatz and the quantum Krylov (qK) method are considered. The resource estimations for VQE show that a few hundred qubits and less than one million two-qubit gates could be sufficient to simulate LGPS. Aeroelastic Reduced Order Model: Kriging-Corrected Potential Flow

A novel aeroelastic reduced order model is developed for two-dimensional gust interaction modeling in transonic flows. Such conditions exhibit a key nonlinearity: sonic shock motion. The proposed approach comprises an aerodynamics reduced order model coupled to a structural model. The aerodynamics model consists of corrected integrated force coefficients computed by an unsteady potential flow method (incompressible vortex panels). The corrections are obtained from kriging surrogates trained using inviscid compressible computational fluid dynamics data. Two gust lengths (namely, long and short) are simulated for this purpose and serve as the upper and lower bounds of the model. The developed aeroelastic reduced order model is evaluated via modeling untried gust cases, the lengths of which fall between the training cases. Applied to the FFAST Crank and NACA0012 airfoils, the approach accurately reproduces aeroelastic response-with deviations never exceeding 8.0 and 10.5%, respectively. In terms of computational cost, the trained models were more than an order of magnitude faster than the computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Lung cancer remains a widespread health problem worldwide and maintains a dismal position as the leading cause of cancer deaths. The disease continues to claim significant lives, surpassing other cancers in mortality in both men and women. Considering this alarming reality, it is urgent to explore innovative diagnostic methods that can detect lung cancer in its early stages. The study of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in exhaled breath (EX) has emerged as a promising avenue to demonstrate their potential as biomarkers for various lung diseases. One particularly notable metabolic process contributing to this area is the peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, which results in the formation of a variety of volatile organic compounds, including aldehydes. Cancer cells, especially lung cancer, exhibit elevated levels of reactive oxygen species, which promote random lipid peroxidation and subsequent formation of various aldehydes. It is important to note that a significant portion of these volatile aldehydes are excreted from the body, which is why they are of interest as potential markers for early disease detection. Gas evaluation, especially the detection of low-concentration compounds such as hexanal, requires the development of highly accurate sensors. Therefore, we chose surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors, which are known for their gas detection accuracy. The complex process involves designing and modeling the SAW sensor using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2. The adsorption rate and conductivity of the gas sensor are determined based on the electric potential and the frequency response is examined at various eigen frequencies. Based on the results obtained, subsequent steps include further characterization and fabrication of a biosensor designed to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which will enable the analysis of human exhaled air.

Commutation failure (CF) is a critical dynamic issue in the LCC-based HVDC transmission network that occurs primarily because of a short-circuit fault taking place on the load side of the inverter and may lead to interruption in the power flow affecting the reliability of the entire system. This paper deals with the modelling and implementation of a resistive-type superconducting fault current limiter (RSFCL) to improve the power flow of the system by limiting the current during fault conditions. A model of RSFCL is proposed and implemented on the standard CIGRE HVDC network using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. The simulation results exhibit 62.5% improvements in the magnitude and 12% in the recovery time of the power flow during the fault conditions compared to the benchmark system: validating the proposed model. The results can provide the basis for modelling and implementation of RSFCL to the practical HVDC networks.

Identification of a Full-Envelope Learjet-25 simulation Model Using a Stitching Architecture

A full flight-envelope simulation model of the Calspan Variable Stability Learjet-25 was developed from flight data. The model is based on a stitched model architecture, which falls into the class of quasi-linear-parameter-varying models, and was developed using a series of discrete linear point models and trim data. Point models were identified from flight data at five different flight and loading conditions. A scaling method was used and validated to convert all identified point models to a common loading configuration. The quasi-linear aerodynamics from the models were then combined with trim data and the full nonlinear equations of motion to develop the stitched model. Through validation with flight data not used in the model development, the model was shown to accurately represent the aircraft dynamics within the normal flight envelope and be able to estimate the effects of weight and center of gravity variations. The paper provides a brief background of model stitching, lists the steps required to develop a stitched model from flight data, and then demonstrates how the steps are applied to the Learjet.

Future wireless networks will exhibit heterogeneity of traffic generating sources originated by numerous Internet of Things (IoT) nodes as well as traditional mobile phones. Moreover, the space of novel IoT services is expanding the simple monitoring tasks of IoT nodes to more complex services in which a node can be in a monitoring state and transition autonomously to an alarm state when predefined conditions are detected. The complexity of the envisioned future wireless networks is indeed new to the community with challenges affecting many aspects such as protocol design and network operation mechanisms. Traffic modeling lies at the core of these issues. As the advancement of technologies continues, faithful performance evaluation measures are dependent on the underlying traffic model. In this scope, we propose a Tiered Markov Modulated Poisson Process (TMMPP) that is capable of capturing IoT traffic characteristics, e.g. patterns and seasonality, which occur in long time spans, e.g days, with the flexibility of modeling different IoT service behaviors. Moreover, we study an autonomous edge scaling mechanism as a use case illustrating the benefits of the proposed TMMPP traffic model.

Surface induced transfer doping (SITD) is a novel, highly efficiency doping technique that is being used to invoke the p-type surface conductivity of intrinsic diamond for high-frequency, high-power electronic devices. In the SITD process, a high electron affinity (EA) thin-film acceptor layer is interfaced with the hydrogenated diamond surface with negative electron affinity (NEA) to induce the effective p-type doping on the diamond surface. Overall, surface mobility, carrier density, and operational characteristics of the SITD-doped devices are contingent on the type and quality of the interface between the acceptor layer and hydrogenated diamond surfaces. Initial device designs used atmospheric molecules as the acceptor layer. In recent times, transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted considerable attention due to their large EA resulting in increased charge density and surface stability. However, TMO's tendency to exhibit stoichiometry degradation makes them vulnerable to the device fabrication process. Motivated by this, our internal theoretical modeling efforts based on a hybrid approach of machine learning and first principle calculations have focused on performing bottom-up design of novel acceptor layers with higher stability and improved device performance using two-dimensional (2D) material. Recent predictions regarding the role of acceptor layers on modifying device-related materials parameters such as stability, band alignment, carrier effective mass, and charge transfer will be presented in this paper. The theoretical modeling results presented here provides guidance to the in-house materials and device design efforts by supplying fundamental insights into the viability of these novel acceptor layer technologies for future device designs.

simulation-based training has the potential to significantly improve training value in the air combat domain. However, synthetic opponents must be controlled by high-quality behavior models, in order to exhibit human-like behavior. Building such models by hand is recognized as a very challenging task. In this work, we study how multi-agent deep reinforcement learning can be used to construct behavior models for synthetic pilots in air combat simulation. We empirically evaluate a number of approaches in two air combat scenarios, and demonstrate that curriculum learning is a promising approach for handling the high-dimensional state space of the air combat domain, and that multi-objective learning can produce synthetic agents with diverse characteristics, which can stimulate human pilots in training.

Techno-Economic and Environmental Evaluations of Decarbonized Fossil-Intensive Industrial Processes by Reactive Absorption & Adsorption CO2 Capture Systems

Decarbonization of energy-intensive systems (e.g., heat and power generation, iron, and steel production, petrochemical processes, cement production, etc.) is an important task for the development of a low carbon economy. In this respect, carbon capture technologies will play an important role in the decarbonization of fossil-based industrial processes. The most significant techno-economic and environmental performance indicators of various fossil-based industrial applications decarbonized by two reactive gas-liquid (chemical scrubbing) and gas-solid CO2 capture systems are calculated, compared, and discussed in the present work. As decarbonization technologies, the gas-liquid chemical absorption and more innovative calcium looping systems were employed. The integrated assessment uses various elements, e.g., conceptual design of decarbonized plants, computer-aided tools for process design and integration, evaluation of main plant performance indexes based on industrial and simulation results, etc. The overall decarbonization rate for various assessed applications (e.g., power generation, steel, and cement production, chemicals) was set to 90% in line with the current state of the art in the field. Similar non-carbon capture plants are also assessed to quantify the various penalties imposed by decarbonization (e.g., increasing energy consumption, reducing efficiency, economic impact, etc.). The integrated evaluations exhibit that the integration of decarbonization technologies (especially chemical looping systems) into key energy-intensive industrial processes have significant advantages for cutting the carbon footprint (60-90% specific CO2 emission reduction), improving the energy conversion yields and reducing CO2 capture penalties.
