Although modeling and simulation is widely used by many researchers in aerospace community, there are still a lot of problems that should be overcome. Some of them are model maintainability, interoperability and reusability. From the viewpoint of these issues, some concepts and approaches from software engineering should be adapted into aerospace engineering. Object oriented programming and agent-based modeling are two of these approaches. The value of these two approaches is not very well-known by aerospace modeling and simulation community. To this end, we propose a framework that allows modelers to design object oriented and agent based models for aerospace simulation studies. The framework is written in Octave’s scripting language that supportsm file scripts which most of the engineering simulation developers are familiar with. Thanks to the object oriented approach, managing the development process of multi-object simulations is much easier than conventional script development. The framework that we propose is designed by considering service oriented simulation principles. So, we think the proposed framework is one of the early attempts at service oriented simulation tools for aerospace studies. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa. Sensors such as stereo-vision can be used to detect obstacles in the airfield in order to improve situational awareness. Unfortunately, their accuracy is quite limited especially at long distances. An Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) filter is proposed in order to filter noise from the estimated position of detected obstacles. The IMM filter is based on four Kalman filters, each intended for a specific scenario. The developed IMM filter is evaluated and its performance is compared to that of the individual filters. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa. All rights reserved.

Using best-in-class modeling tools for special modeling tasks and ensuring the consistency and reusability of models are important aspects in a development process relying on model-based design. Based on models for the real-time simulation of more electrical aircraft systems, this paper describes how to exploit the advantages of FMI- and FPGA-based models for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests. Specifically, this is done by using the example of electric drives for aircraft actuators. This example examines the prerequisites and workflow steps for conducting tests efficiently with regard to time, and costs in a development process that involves multiple partners and tools. A demonstration system shows the applicability of the described concepts and standards. It enables real-time testing of an elevator controller for civil aircraft considering high-frequency phenomena. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa. The modeling and simulation community in aviation is in search of standardization in simulation scenario definition. While the System Entity Structure (SES) ontology promises an effective formal means of domain modeling, computational representation is still a key challenge to tackle for fostering wide-acceptance and standardization. This paper presents an eXtended Markup Language (XML) based approach. It first gives the relational specification and the schema definition of the SES ontology. Following a layered modeling workflow, it then presents a schema definition for the simulation scenario definition language and exemplifies its utilization. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa. The market for small unmanned multicopter vehicle platforms has been growing rapidly, and as demand for using these vehicles grows, there is a pressing need for higher-fidelity simulation frameworks with accurate and validated dynamic models to ensure safe operation in complex environments, such as urban city-scapes, to support regulatory decision-making. In this paper we present a modeling, control, and simulation framework to support autonomy research on small unmanned multicopters. This framework includes dynamics based on a forward flight aircraft model derived from aerodynamic coefficients, an extensible mode-based flight management system, a flexible automatic flight control system, and an interactive environment model for urban environments. The system is built on the modular Reflection Architecture that facilitates development and testing of new research components for autonomous vehicle systems in both hardware and software. To handle the high volume of increasing air traffic demands, a more efficient operational strategy is necessary due to capacity limitations. Reducing inefficiencies in ground space workflow can greatly reduce extra costs for airlines and airports as well as improve passenger comfort by increasing the number of on-time flights. Thus, this paper will focus on improving the aircraft turnaround process with the goal of increasing the number of on-time flights and decreasing the total delay time. A 7-step protocol called Design and Analysis of simulation of Experiments (DASE) was applied to a high-speed engine study. Two multivariate surrogate model types were compared for engine performance sensitivity analysis: a polynomial regression model and a regression tree. The polynomial regression model produced imprecise results. The regression tree model produced significantly more precise results, with almost all data falling within the discernible (practical) difference declared for the simulation experiment. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, aiaa.
