Aviation research often relies on real-time, pilot-inthe-loop flight simulation as a means to develop new flight software, flight hardware, or pilot procedures. Often these simulations become so complex that a single processor is incapable of performing the necessary computations within a fixed time-step. Threads are an elegant means to distribute the computational workload when running on a symmetric multi-processor machine. However, programming with threads often requires operating system specific calls that reduce code portability and maintainability. While a multithreaded simulation allows a significant increase in the simulation complexity, it also increases the workload of a simulation operator by requiring that the operator determine which models run on which thread. To address these concerns an object-oriented design was implemented in the NASA Langley Standard Real-Time simulation in C++ (LaSRS++) application framework. The design provides a portable and maintainable means to use threads and also provides a mechanism to automatically load balance the simulation models. © 2001 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

modeling and simulation (M&S) will continue to play a key role within the national defence communities, specifically in force development, simulation-based acquisition, training, mission rehearsal, operational support, and test and evaluation. The Weapon Engagement simulation Group at DREY evaluates the performance and effectiveness of missile weapon systems through engagement-level modeling and simulation to provide technical advice for operational support, on concept analysis and threat assessment. The present paper discusses the integrated suite of tools that was developed using recent M&S techniques, and their impact on the modeling, simulation and analysis activities within the research team. An integrated M&S capability centred around the commercial-off-the-shelf modeling environment Matlab/Simulink was established, and was complemented with a set of utility applications for pre and post-processing. The re-use of legacy models was a key requirement in the selection of the modeling environment, which was extensively verified with Matlab/Simulink. A library of weapon component models was developed to foster sharing and re-use, and to optimize the model development process. Recognizing the increasing use of a diverse set of simulation frameworks, the portability of Matlab/Simulink-based models to other environments was demonstrated using Matlab's Real-Time Workshop, with the integration of a generic model into a C++ class. Based on the role that the High Level Architecture (HLA) is expected to play in the future development and application of distributed simulation, DREV demonstrated with success the incorporation of a Matlab/Simulink model in an HLA federation and identified a procedure to streamline the process. In the context of the NASA Aviation Safety Program, an experimental synthetic vision system is being developed by an international team. Testing and evaluation of the synthetic vision implementation is being performed in several different research environments. From an efficiency point of view it is desired to be able to use the same implementation in all target environments, in spite of differences in the already existing infrastructure. To achieve this, the total functionality needed for the implementation and integration has been divided into a number of modules in such a way that: 1. The modules containing the implementation of format and functionality can be the same in all target environments. 2. The integration is performed by combining a specific set of modules. 3. The modules communicate over a (virtual) network. The current synthetic vision system prototype consists completely of commercial-off-the-shelf, PC-based components. The Advanced Continuous simulation Language (ACSL) has been serving the aerospace community for over 25 years in the development of aerodynamic simulations, which include tactical missiles, commercial launch vehicles, fixed wing aircraft, rotary wing aircraft and satellites. In recent years, the ACSL Graphic Modeller (GM) has proved to be an effective means to model and simulate the dynamics of systems. GM provides the tools to graphically model and organize very large and complicated systems by both inventing graphical icons to represent specialized parts of the model and re-using graphical icons which are common in a particular application area. The paper presents a benchmark model of a six degree-oMreedom (6-DOF) surface to air missile system constructed from hierarchically structured graphical model building blocks. This model demonstrates how a graphical representation of a missile model leads to a much clearer representation of the original math model. A hierarchical (tree structured) model lends itself to easy navigation and inspection by analysts with no prior experience with the particular model. The Graphic Modeller is also the framework for simulation analysis. Parameters can be inspected and changed. Individual deterministic, parameter sweep, Monte Carlo and optimization runs can be applied to the simulation from GM. © 2001 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

The Northrop Grumman Avionics simulation (AVSIM) is one of a set of simulations focused on fighter class radars. It is designed to support a variety of analysis and development activities, spanning requirements analysis, radar software development, performance evaluation, and pilot interfaces. This paper describes AVSIM and the simulation architecture that surrounds it. The model provides high fidelity representations of both Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground radar modes, encompassing detection capability, measurement errors, tracking performance, and timelines. Analytical models are used to represent high data rate signal processing functions, while operational software is used for less intensive data processing such as radar control and tracking activities. AVSIM can be driven by models such as the Joint Integrated Mission Model (JIMM), or by tightly controlled scenarios from its own Scenario Generator. It can be run in real time as part of a cockpit simulator, or in Monte Carlo mode for detailed performance analysis. Extensive post processing capabilities provide insight into radar detection, measurement errors, tracking, and timeline performance. Scan patterns are also visualized, via playback capabilities. AVSIM represents a substantial advance in the state of the art for high fidelity multi-use avionics simulations. © 2001 by the Northrop Grumman Corporation. simulation and engineering environments are central elements of flight dynamics and control research and development tasks. Based on an analysis of such processes, the Institute of Flight Mechanics and Flight Control of Technische Universitat Miinchen is currently developing an efficient approach for a modeling and control engineering environment. The primary objective of the PC based but basically platform independent program system is to reduce the workload involved in flight dynamics research by providing simulation modules and applications that have a high potential for reusability and significantly increase the level of automation. Furthermore, it allows engineers to focus on the development of generalized problem solution strategies by reducing the amount of user interaction required for configuration specific computations. Another goal is to allow users with only limited programming experience to operate and modify the environment. Finally, the selection of computationally robust algorithms enables to embed the tool into complex processes like parametric optimizations. Quality of both, the program and the results provided by it, is also an important topic. Thus, much attention has been drawn to transparency, online integrity and error checking and to automatically monitor the numerical quality of results produced by the system. In spite of the capability of the tool to be operated on low-cost PC platforms, the system is designed to adapt configurations of all complexities - from early design studies to aircraft models of high complexity. © 2001 by F. Low cost motion devices have been sought to provide motion cues in ground-based flight simulators to meet mission objectives. The ability to provide high frequency vibrations makes the dynamic seat attractive to helicopter training applications. Previous studies have found that dynamic seats enhance the realism of the cockpit and affect pilot workload. This investigation used a three degree-offreedom dynamic seat, i.e., heave, surge, and sway, with limited travels in a research simulator configured as a UH-60 Black Hawk. The seat's effectiveness was studied using acceleration/deceleration, bob-up/bob-down, hover, pirouette, sidestep, and vertical landing maneuvers. Results from four different motion cueing levels, i.e., the dynamic seat, hexapod-like system, hexapod-like plus seat shaker, and large travel plus high frequency vibrations, found the dynamic seat has positive subjective effects in some of the maneuvers. However, no significant objective performance effects were found due to the dynamic seat. © 2001 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

To develop and specify the requirements for a complete aircraft weapon system, separate groups, often working in different locations, develop computerized models of the hardware and software. Typically, many of these models are developed on different types of computers using different computer languages. The objective of this paper is to investigate the ability to embed reusable prototype avionics code directly into the Operational Flight Program (OFF) during prototyping. By developing and using common interfaces, the avionics software developers, display developers, simulation engineers, systems engineers, and requirements engineers can later compare the embedded flight code with the reusable prototype software and displays done very early in the design cycle. The goal is to work directly with the pilots and develop code that will serve as a starting point for the actual avionics changes. This new capability provides higher quality code faster, provides software developers with a better understanding of the requirements, allows the customer/user/developer to gain a better insight into the avionics being developed, and provides the potential to significantly impact development, testing, training, schedule, and costs. Transitioning the reusable prototypes developed to other phases including real time simulation, testing, and training is also included. © 2001 by The Boeing Company. Traditionally the Flight simulation Department of the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR is strong in high fidelity human-in-the-loop flight simulation. In orxter to open up more possibilities for NLR flight simulators as participants in networked simulation exercises, NLR started the project MAPLESIM. During the first part of this project a high-performance network has been created between several of NLR's military flight simulations in combination with computer generated forces using ITEMS. This network makes use of NLR's deterministic reflective memory network (SCRAMNet) for realtime distribution of the critical data. This enables data to be distributed at high rates (50 Hz). The next step in this project is a connection between this high performance network and external simulations. Two different approaches are followed to realise this connection with the outside world. The first has been a DIS based connection. This D1S gateway has been developed in the summer of 2000. For the second gateway to external simulations a HLA protocol interface unit will be developed. This will make it possible to integrate the NLR simulation environment into a complete synthetic environment, together with Command & Control systems, tactical wargaming tools and exercise observation and evaluation tools. SmartFED, an in-house developed tool that facilitates that proprietary simulators at various geographic locations participate in a joint simulation, will control this environment. © 2001 by the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR. In this paper, we are concerned with investigating an interdisciplinary problem which involves more than two disciplines. Specifically we would like to include an example which contains the key factors involved in designing next generation aircraft configurations, namely structural-flow field coupling, propulsion, and control issues. The goal was to select a model that is relatively tractable in terms of the analyzing the individual disciplinary modules, thus allowing for the primary effort to be concerned with the coupling methodology. The example described here is a simplified solid fuel ramjet missile. Each discipline associated with the missiles functionally can be approximated well with closed form and simple numerical approaches. The flow field is approximated by Taylor- Maccoll conic flow which allows for a simple calculation for determining the inlet conditions for the engine combustion process. We establish a coupling mechanism between these three systems by assuming that the missile has very low radial stiffness. Accordingly, we allow the structure's radius to fluctuate depending on the chamber pressure;this in turn alters the cone angle which affects the inlet conditions. Results to date have been completion of the external flow field calculation module, the dynamics module which integrates the equations of motion, and response of the structure to the changing internal pressure. © 2001 by the American Institute of American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics Aeronautics & Astronautics Inc.
