C applications, in particular those using operating system level services, frequently comprise multiple crosscutting concerns: network protocols and security are typical examples of such concerns. While these concerns can partially be addressed during design and implementation of an application, they frequently become an issue at runtime, e.g., to avoid server downtime. A deployed network protocol might not be efficient enough and may thus need to be replaced. Buffer overflows might be discovered that imply critical breaches in the security model of an application. A prefetching strategy may be required to enhance performance. While aspect-oriented programming seems attractive in this context, none of the current aspect systems is expressive and efficient enough to address such concerns. this paper presents a new aspect system to provide a solution to this problem. While efficiency considerations have played an important part in the design of the aspect language, the language allows aspects to be expressed more concisely than previous approaches. In particular, it allows aspect programmers to quantify over sequences of execution points as well as over accesses through variable aliases. We show how the former can be used to modularize the replacement of network protocols and the latter to prevent buffer overflows. We also present an implementation of the language as an extension of Arachne, a dynamic weaver for C applications. Finally, we present performance evaluations supporting that Arachne is fast enough to extend high performance applications, such as the Squid web cache. Copyright 2005 ACM.

this report summarizes the outcome of the 5(th) Workshop on aspect-oriented Modeling (AOM) held in conjunction with the 7(th) international conference on the Unified Modeling Language - UML 2004 - in Lisbon, Portugal. the workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from two communities: aspect-oriented software development (aosd) and software model engineering. It provided a forum for discussing the state of the art in modeling crosscutting concerns at different stages of the software development process: requirements elicitation and analysis, software architecture, detailed design, and mapping to aspect-oriented programming constructs.. this paper gives an overview of the accepted submissions, and summarizes the results of the different discussion groups.

Security requirements, such as authentication, confidentiality, authorization, availability, integrity and privacy, are becoming extremely common in software development processes. However, in practical terms, it has been proved that only rarely the developed software fulfils the related security requirements. the reason for this is twofold. On one hand software developers are not security experts and thus they are not competent in selecting and applying the appropriate security countermeasures. On the other hand, many security requirements are intrinsically difficult to deal with. this paper aims to address both of the aforementioned issues and to introduce potential solutions. It starts by analysing the major security requirements, and goes on to explore how they can be mapped into concrete security solutions or/and mechanisms. then, it examines how the fulfilment of security requirements influences the choice of development methodologies and paradigms (with the emphasis being on the design phase), so that the requirements are effectively satisfied. the discussion covers object-oriented and aspect-oriented programming, the Rational Unified Process, UML and UMLsec, as well as security patterns, with regard to the ways they can support the use of security solutions or/and mechanisms.

Often declared dead or at least dying, C/C++ is still the lingua franca of many application domains. aspect-oriented Programming (AOP) is a programming paradigm that supports the modular implementation of crosscutting concerns. thereby, AOP improves the maintainability, reusability, and configurability of software in general. Although already popular in the Java domain, AOP is still not commonly used in conjunction with C/C++. For a broad adoption of AOP by the software industry, it is crucial to provide solid language and tool support. However, research and tool development for C++ is known to be an extremely hard and tedious task, as the language is overwhelmed with interacting features and hard to analyze. Getting AOP into the C++ domain is not just technical challenge. It is also the question of integrating AOP concepts with the philosophy of the C++ language, which is very different from Java. this paper describes the design and development of the aspectC++ language and weaver, which brings fully-fledged AOP support into the C++ domain.

Shorter product cycles, the requirement for immediate reaction to cyber-attacks and the need for the adaptation to changing environmental conditions demand software reconfigurations to be performed at runtime, in order to reduce downtime. Especially long running applications, which have to provide continuous service should not be restarted for maintenance. they must be updated *** have developed a reconfiguration strategy allowing to identify valid reconfiguration points even in multithreaded environments, enabling dynamic application updates. the usage of dynamic aspect weaving enables us to transparently create self-adaptive applications without additional compilation steps or programming constraints in the software development *** demonstrate how our approach can be applied to a real-world retail application of a large logistics company. We will describe the implementation of the reconfiguration aspect and our dynamic aspect weaving tool Rapier ***. Copyright 2005 ACM.

this paper presents FEATUREC++, a novel language extension to C++ that supports Feature-oriented Programming (FOP) and aspect-oriented Programming (AOP). Besides well-known concepts of FOP languages, FEATUREC++ contributes several novel FOP language features, in particular multiple inheritance and templates for generic programming. Furthermore, FEATUREC++ solves several problems regarding incremental software development by adopting AOP concepts. Starting our considerations on solving these problems, we give-a summary of drawbacks and weaknesses of current FOP languages in expressing incremental refinements. Specifically, we outline five key problems and present three approaches to solve them: Multi Mixins aspectual Mixin Layers, and aspectual Mixins that adopt AOP concepts in different ways. We use FEATUREC++ as a representative FOP language to explain these three approaches. Finally, we present a case study to clarify the benefits of FEATUREC++ and its AOP extensions.

software product lines are gaining importance because they allow improvements in time to market, cost, productivity and quality of software products. Architecture evaluation is one important aspect in the development of product lines for large-scale distributed systems. It is desirable to evaluate and compare architectures for functionality and quality attributes before implementing or changing the whole system. Often, the effort required for the thorough evaluation of alternatives using prototypes is prohibitive. In this paper, we present an approach for cost-efficient software architecture evaluation, based on scenario-oriented software specifications, modeling the system services. We show how to map the same set of services to several possible target architectures and give a procedure to generate evaluation prototypes using aspect-oriented programming techniques. this significantly reduces the effort required to explore architectural alternatives. We explain our approach using the Center TRACON Automation System as an example. Copyright 200X ACM.

the development of IT-enabled services (interdependent software and services) involves different methods, tools and experts with different backgrounds. Coordination mechanisms that manage the close collaborative work are given through the concepts of procedure models. An effective use of procedure models requires tool support that covers easy-to-use documentation aspects as well as sophisticated run time support for the complete development life cycle. therefore we introduce a multi-layer tool architecture capable of supporting all stages of the application of procedure models. In particular we focus on the transformation of models between different abstraction layers. the practicability of our approach is discussed on the base of a prototypical implementation of its tool components. © the authors, except as noted.

the emergence of Web services represents a shift from component-based architectures that have proved successful in the context of enterprise computing to service-oriented architectures that are more suited to the highly distributed Internet-based applications. this trend towards service-oriented computing necessitates the re-evaluation of software development methodologies that are used in the construction of distributed applications. With growing acceptance of service-oriented computing and increasing number of large-scale Web Services projects there is some evidence that practitioners involved in implementing these solutions are paying only limited attention to how such applications should be designed. Frequently, the design of Web Services applications is driven by performance and scalability considerations, rather than any sound software engineering principles. A comprehensive methodological framework is required to guide designers and developers of service-oriented applications through the various phases of software development life cycle with specific emphasis on producing stable, reusable and extendable services. In this paper we discuss design of service-oriented applications from a software engineering perspective, and propose a software development framework for Web Services based on identification of elementary business function using business function decomposition and mapping these functions to service operations. We apply interface design principles adapted from object-oriented design as guidelines for the design of services.
