In standard computer graphics environments, there are numerous of tools to view and edit data. those tools often use more than one view to support visualization and interaction more efficiently [Maple et al. 2004]. Based on existing work of Coordinated Multiple Views (CMV) [Roberts 2007], our approach introduces atomic modifiers to coordinate views in 3D-applications. Adaptable to a given context, complex and flexible view adjustments can be achieved by combining modifiers. thereby, users gain a deeper and better understanding of the visualized data.

We conducted four experiments on egocentric depth perception using blind walking with a restricted scanning method in both the real and a virtual environment. Our viewing condition in all experiments was monocular. We varied the field of view (real), scan direction (real), blind walking method (real and virtual), and selfrepresentation (virtual) over distances of 4 meters to 7 meters. the field of view varied between 21.1° and 13.6°. the scan direction varied between near-to-far scanning and far-to-near scanning. the blind walking method varied between direct blind walking and an indirect method of blind walking that matched the geometry of our laboratory. We varied self-representation between having a selfavatar (a fully tracked, animated, and first-person perspective of the user), having a static avatar (a mannequin avatar that did not move), to having no avatar (a disembodied camera view of the virtual environment). In the real environment, we find an effect of field of view;participants performed more accurately with larger field of view. In both real and virtual environments, we find an effect of blind walking method;participants performed more accurately in direct blind walking. We do not find an effect of distance underestimation in any environment, nor do we find an effect of self-representation. © 2011 ACM.

[thurrell et al. 1998] first observed that the perceived speed of optic flow decreases in linear proportion to the increasing physical speed of locomotion on a treadmill and proposed this as a mechanism to discount from the visual signal retinal motion due to self-motion, described as an arthrovisual effect [thurrell and Pelah 2005]. Since human locomotion consists of a complex of articulated movement, step parameters and associated afferent, efferent and efference copy signals, questions arise as to the relative contributions of these component messages to the reduction in the perception of optic flow speed (POFS). Here we report experiments [Casey 2010] on the role of step frequency (SF) previously proposed as a reliable estimate for perception of the speed of self-motion [Durgin et al. 2007;Dong et al. 2008].

Uncertainty constitutes a major obstacle to effective decision making. this work presents perceptual and cognitive principles from Tufte, Chambers and Bertin as well as results from user experiments for the theoretical evaluation of uncertainty visualization techniques that aid decision making. these principles can be used in future theoretical evaluations of existing or newly developed uncertainty visualization methods before usability testing with actual users. © 2007 ACM.

An experiment to determine factors that influence the perceived sex of virtual characters was conducted. Four different model types were used: highly realistic male and female models, an androgynous character, and a point light walker. three different types of motion were applied to all models: motion captured male and female walks, and neutral synthetic walks. We found that both form and motion influence sex perception for these characters: for neutral synthetic motions, form determines perceived sex, whereas natural motion affects the perceived sex of both androgynous and realistic forms. these results have implications on variety and realism when simulating large crowds of virtual characters. © 2007 ACM.

For humans, it is useful to be able to visually detect an object's physical properties. One potentially important source of information is the way the object moves and interacts with other objects in the environment. Here, we use computer simulations of a virtual ball bouncing on a horizontal plane to study the correspondence between our ability to estimate the ball's elasticity and to predict its future path. three experiments were conducted to address (1) perception of the ball's elasticity, (2) interaction with the ball, and (3) prediction of its trajectory. the results suggest that different strategies and information sources are used for passive perception versus actively predicting future behavior. © 2007 ACM.

An innovative action-based motoric measure of slant is proposed, based on gait. this measure is ecologically-valid derived from the angle that the foot makes in relation to the horizontal ground plane immediately before impact (Figure 1). this work explores whether the proposed measure is affected by factors such as material of the walking surface and inclination of the walking ramps. Moreover, experimental studies were conducted in a real environment set-up and in its virtual counterpart. Comparisons between real-world spatial judgments and simulation equivalents provide performance benchmarks as well as tools to assess whether a technological set-up would be of similar functional fidelity to a real-world task situation. © 2007 ACM.
