Since 2004, the geotechnical Professional Team (EPGEO) from the Regional Association of Oil and Gas Companies in Latin America and the Caribbean (Asociacion Regional de Empresas de Petroleo y Gas Natural en Latinoamerica y el Caribe, arpel) has been working on a knowledge management-related project for the Oil & Gas industry, consisting in the creation of three technical guides on pipeline Integrity Management given the occurrence of geohazards in Hydrocarbon Transportation Systems. This initiative comprises the creation of 3 guides related to: i) Guide 1: Monitoring Geohazards for pipeline Integrity, ii) Guide 2: geotechnical Mitigation Works in pipelines, iii) Guide 3: geotechnical Risk in pipelines. The EPGEO published Guide 1 in 2016 and made a presentation at the 2017 IPG (IPG2017-2538), while Guide 2 will be completed by 2021. Guide 3 will be created in 2021-2023. This document shows the methodology and contents for preparing the first two guides, focusing on Guide 2, which comprises different alternatives, analyses and technical solutions to the occurrence of geohazards that might affect the integrity of a pipeline transportation system.

The long linear nature of buried pipelines results in the risk of interaction with a range of geotechnical hazards including downslope movements at pipeline stream and river crossings. Ground movement induced by these geotechnical hazards can subject a pipeline to displacement controlled axial, lateral, vertical and bending loading. These geotechnical hazards can result in the accumulation of axial tensile and compressive strains in the pipe. Therefore, calculation of pipe strain demand and strain capacity considering the site condition and the appropriate slope movement mechanism is necessary in assessing the pipeline integrity to support maintenance management. It is a common practice to use weight concrete coating to provide negative buoyancy for river crossing application. The pipeline concrete coating design may extend to the toe of the slope and end adjacent to the pipeline location experiencing displacement (bending deformations). The discontinuity of the concrete coating may result in strain concentration at the end of the concrete coating when the pipeline is subject to plastic deformation. To address this without exaggerating the stiffening effect of the concrete, it is necessary to account for pipe concrete coating properties and for the slip between the concrete-pipe interface. This paper presents a case study analyses of slope movement using a novel 3D continuum model to illustrate the detailed information that can be derived from geotechnical hazard simulation. The model was calibrated and validated for the assessment of pipe-soil interaction modeling of geotechnical events. The analyses presented in this paper provide insights into the effects of ground movement on pipeline integrity near river crossing. The analyses highlight the effects of the pipe concrete weight coating on the pipeline response at the crossing that may affect the remedial action decisions. © 2024 by asme.

This paper introduces a methodology aimed at analyzing failures in buried pipelines exposed to significant geotechnical displacement. The occurrence of ground movement and heave generates substantial longitudinal strain through elongation and bending, potentially leading to buckling in the pipeline segment. Buckling, in turn, can compromise the pipeline's elastic stability, allowing further elongation with soil movement. The girth weld's presence acts as a potential weak point, susceptible to either brittle or ductile failure. Conventional analyses using standards such as asme B31.8 or API 1104 tend to provide conservative estimations and often fail to fully elucidate the extent of geotechnical displacement or the root cause of failures. Moreover, these approaches overlook addressing failures that may occur when the girth welds are ductile in nature as specified in API 1104. This is especially true for modern steels. To effectively tackle extensive geotechnical displacement, this paper advocates strain-based damage methodologies utilizing critical strain as a pivotal material parameter. Understanding the true stress-strain behavior, particularly the critical strain parameter of base metal, Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), and weld, is crucial in predicting potential failure. The paper's approach involves reviewing existing strain-based failure methodologies in literature and then delving into analyzing the geotechnical movement of buried pipeline segments using a critical strain-based failure criterion. The lateral displacement of the pipeline is analyzed through a finite element approach that integrates both global and detailed local sub-modeling. This examination includes showcasing the impact of weld misorientation and the presence of planar defects related to welding. The paper also discusses the evolution of damage at the local girth weld, emphasizing the significance of the "Ductile Failure Damage Indicator (DFDI)" parameter. pipeline geohazard assessment involves the delineation and quantification of threat severity associated with a suite of geohazard mechanisms deemed credible for a specific setting or project. The context for a typical assessment is loss of containment from the pipeline - an ultimate limit state (ULS) - considering individual geohazard mechanisms (e.g., landslide, fault displacement, rockfall, subsidence, etc.). To estimate the probability of loss of containment associated with a particular geohazard mechanism at a given location, the evaluation process can be partitioned into an estimate of the probability of occurrence of the geohazard mechanism at that location, and the conditional probability of loss of pipe integrity should the event occur. The product of these two probabilities is termed "susceptibility" expressed as loss of containment events per year at a given location. A typical approach to manage geohazards assessed in this way is to set a target susceptibility threshold to determine mitigation requirements to reduce the estimated susceptibility value for individual geohazards. The rationale for selecting a target susceptibility threshold value has been a topic of interest in recent pipeline projects in Canada. This paper demonstrates a reliability-based approach in rationalizing the selected pipeline geohazard target susceptibility threshold and linking geohazard assessment results to Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) of all threat categories in asme B31-8S.

The use of the new three-dimensional refraction technique was applied around the right-of-way (DDV) of the hydrocarbon gathering pipeline system (U-200), approximately 14.4 km long and 1.5 km wide. This technique included: a) processing of field seismic gathers data in conjunction with LIDAR-DTM topographic information, with which a 3D model of P-wave velocities was constructed;b) calibration of the P-velocity model with field data;and c) interpretation of the final P-velocity model. The application of the new technique allowed the three-dimensional study of the subsurface around the U-200 by including the geological characterization of the velocities and the elaboration of several predictive geological maps (lithology, structural, topography, etc.). Correlations of these maps allowed the building of risk factor maps, in which areas with higher or lower geodynamic risk can be directly identified. These areas represented the zones where the pipeline/flowline was most prone to collapse.

Due to the health emergency currently affecting the planet, it has been impossible for engineering specialists to carry out direct inspections of the land. During this time, it has been necessary to develop techniques and procedures that allow engineers to obtain information from the land remotely. Here, they are supported by the technology that allows them to record images remotely via drones and communicate so they can perform inspections by auxiliary field personnel, directed at a distance by specialists. To do this, a preliminary flight plan is defined, based on the experience and knowledge of the terrain by the specialist and the visual of the drone is transmitted via the Internet from a PC in the field. Later, which images to record and the sites that require more detail or a direct inspection by the field assistant are defined. Finally, the field assistant transmits the images of the inspection. In this way, the specialist's training and experience, the operational ease of the drone, and the skill of the field staff are taken advantage of. This article details the procedure for remote inspection, and ways in which it can even be extended to corridor recognition tasks to define the layout of rights of way.

At the end of 2018, a large-scale landslide was identified near the Right of Way of one of the pipelines operated by Cenit Transporte y Logistica de Hidrocarburos. In this zone it was possible to identify a populated area and a river. At the beginning the depth of the Landslide did not represent a hazard to the pipeline due to the Horizontal Directional Drilling technique applied when the pipeline was built. A monitoring program was developed through inclinometers and piezometers and In-Line Inspections were carried out to identify any disturbance in the alignment of the pipeline. From the monitoring program and In-Line Inspection data it was possible to confirm interaction between the landslide and the pipeline. A perpendicular force to the pipeline alignment produces a bending strain at two points, and landslide interact with the pipeline along a length of 170 m. The depth of the landslide failure surface was in between 17 to 22 m, and the pipeline was about 15 m deep. Due to this interaction, it was necessary to develop a risk assessment to identify a safe limit displacement. For a while, this allowed us to design both a temporal innovative solution considering a flexible pipeline and a definitive solution to build the new segment of the pipeline which was deeper than the last one, through the Horizontal Directional Drilling technique.

The main areas susceptible to the occurrence of landslides, which imply a threat against the pipeline system, are identified, mapped and classified according to their degree of danger, for which the kinematics of each landslide is considered its intensity and probability of occurrence. In a second phase, detailed geological, geotechnical and geophysical investigations of the main landslides, both active and potential, are carried out. A monitoring program of the unstable slopes through inclinometers, piezometers, strain-gauges, crack meters is carried out in order to determine the degree of activity of the landslides. Among the monitoring techniques, PCM (pipeline Current Mapper) has been incorporated. Additionally, a record and analysis of trigger factors such as rainfall and seismic activity is carried out. As an additional control system, periodic review of multi-temporal satellite images has been incorporated, which provides a macro vision of the evolution of geodynamic, hydrodynamic and anthropic processes that could affect the integrity of the pipeline any time. Of importance for management is the work of preventive maintenance of the Right of Way, trying to identify and manage the geodynamic processes in a timely manner, before they become uncontrollable. As a result, we have an Oil pipeline System that has not suffered any rupture, and without consequently oil spills, in more than 21 years of operation. Copyright © 2021 by asme.
