The large signal stability analysis of a hybrid AC/DC microgrid based on a grid-connected inverter with cascaded control is discussed. The impacts of the connected inductor, capacitor, and the control parameters of the inverter on the DC link stability region are analyzed. To achieve these analyses, a dynamic model of the microgrid with the cascaded control inverter is first developed. A Lyapunov large-signal stability analysis tool is then applied to estimate the domain of attraction, which is the asymptotic stability region. Results show that DC side capacitor, the AC side grid filter, as well as the control gain, will have different influences on the stability regions of the DC link voltage. High fidelity simulations through PLECS are successfully applied to verify the asymptotic stability regions estimated from the Lyapunov large signal analysis method.

This paper focuses on the design, modeling and basic control of a variable stiffness actuator to be used in combination with a regenerative electromechanical drive system. Due to the use of a flexible beam, the actuator has the ability to store and return elastic potential energy. Also, an ultracapacitor is used in the electromechanical drive, which allows electrical energy storage and return. Moreover, elastic and electrostatic energies can be exchanged, resulting in a highly efficient and lightweight design which will be beneficial for robotic prostheses, exoskeletons and other orthotic devices. The paper presents a model and calculation method for large beam deflections and the integrated electromechanical actuator model. A semiactive virtual control strategy is used to decouple the mechanical dynamics from the charge dynamics and achieve position control of the actuator. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the control system and the energy exchange features.

This article presents the design of a reinforcement learning method based flight controller to enhance the qualities of image taken from an octorotor platform. Concerning the effect of a low resolution and a high blur rate of target images on feature extraction and target detection, we started by analyzing the relationship between these two kinds of image qualities and altitude and velocity of the octorotor. This leads to the generation of corresponding control commands. We then applied a reinforcement learning technique to automatically design the altitude and velocity controllers of the octorotor. The image analysis and the control command generation algorithms are successfully tested on the octorotor platform, and the controllers demonstrate a satisfactory performance in simulations.

Additive manufacturing (AM) uses computer-aided design to construct parts layer by layer. Relative to traditional manufacturing processes, AM provides a time-efficient and cost-effective way to produce low-volume, customized parts with complex geometries. This work presents an improved Cross Coupled iterative learning control (CCILC) scheme to overcome current limitations in contour following for complex, free-form curves in AM The approach involves modifying the definition of the error vector used in the individual axis iterative learning controllers and defining time varying weightings based on the curvature of the reference trajectory to couple tracking and contour errors. In this paper, the design for the improved CCILC system is presented, and the performance of this system is compared to the performance of existing ILC control schemes via simulations. In comparison to the current control methods, the simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvements for contour tracking of a reference trajectory with high levels of curvature.

With the rapid growth in the amount of computations that need to be performed by modern electronic control units and in the complexity of the algorithms, there is a pressing need to develop approaches to reduce chronometric loading in automotive vehicles. This paper presents a cyberphysical systems framework for the development of stochastic optimal decision policies that trigger the computations online. For a specific case study, we consider online triggering of the computations involved in obtaining a linearized model in a setting when such a linearized model is required by control or estimation algorithms. The objective is to define a policy for triggering the linearization that balances the average model accuracy (or expected closed loop performance) with the average computational cost. The problem is formulated as a stochastic optimal control problem and solved using stochastic dynamic programming (SDP). The approach is described, then illustrated with three examples, a pendulum, a turbocharged diesel engine, and a turbocharged spark ignition engine, that illustrate the trade-off between the computational cost and expected linearized model accuracy.

The configuration and control of aftertreatment systems have a significant impact on their functionalities and emission control performance. The traditional aftertreatment system configurations, i.e., connections from one aftertreatment subsystem to another subsystem in series, are simple but generally do not yield the optimal aftertreatment system performance. New aftertreatment configurations, in conjunction with new engine and aftertreatment control, can significantly improve engine efficiency and emission reduction performance. However, new configuration design requires human intuition and in-depth knowledge of engine and aftertreatment system design and control. The purpose of this study is to develop a general systematic and computationally-efficient method which enables automated and simultaneous optimization of passive selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system architectures and the associated non-uniform cylinder-to-cylinder combustion (NUCCC) controls based on a newly proposed highly reconfigurable passive SCR model structure and integer partition theory. The proposed method is general enough to account for passive SCR systems with two or more TWC stages. We demonstrate through this case study that the optimized passive SCR configuration, in conjunction with the optimized NUCCC control, can reduce the NH3 specific fuel consumption by up to 21.90%.

In this paper, a novel event triggered neural network (NN) adaptive controller is presented for uncertain affine nonlinear systems. controller design is based on an observer, called as Modified State Observer (MSO), which is used to approximate uncertainties online. State is sensed continuously yet sent on feedback network only when required, in aperiodic fashion. Lyapunov analysis is used to derive this condition which is dynamic in nature since it is based on tracking error. In this way ETNAC helps to not only saves communication cost but also computational efforts. MSO formulations have two tunable gains which let you do fast estimation without inducing high frequency oscillations in the system. A benchmark example of 2-link robotic manipulator is used to show the efficacy of the proposed controller.

This paper presents a distributed current source (DCS) method for modeling the dynamic responses of eddy current density (ECD) induced in electrical conductors and its corresponding magnetic flux density (MFD);both nonmagnetic and weakly magnetized conductors are considered. Unlike conventional numerical methods such as finite element analysis (FEA), the DCS method, which accounts for the eddy-current and magnetization effects by means of equivalent volume and surface current-sources, derives closed-form solutions to the ECD and MFD fields in state-space representation. The model has been experimentally validated and verified by comparing results from FEA simulations with both harmonic and nonharmonic excitations. To gain physical insights to the measured MFD for simultaneous estimating the material/geometrical properties of a conductor, the static and dynamic responses to rectangular pulsed current excitations have been numerically investigated, confirming the feasibility and effectiveness of the measurement methods.

This paper proposes a control-oriented chemical reaction based two-zone combustion model designed to accurately describe the combustion process and thermal performance for spark-ignition engines. The combustion chamber is assumed to be divided into two zones: reaction and unburned zones, where the chemical reaction takes place in the reaction zone and the unburned zone contains all the unburned mixture. In contrast to the empirical pre-determined Wiebe-function-based combustion model, an ideal two-step chemical reaction mechanism is used to reliably model the detailed combustion process such as mass fraction-burned (MFB) and rate of heat release. The interaction between two zones includes mass and heat transfer at the zone interface to have a smooth combustion process. This control oriented model is extensively calibrated based on the experimental data to demonstrate its capability of predicting the combustion process and thermodynamic states of the in-cylinder mixture.
