Since the invention of optical fiber in the 1970's, optical communication has been changing the landscape of telecommunication and data communication worldwide with its ultra-broad bandwidth and long haul transmission capabilities. It connects people around the world through submarine inter-continent optical cables, is the backbone of metro area networks, and is essential for data center network connectivity. Today, cost effective 100Gb/s optical links on a single fiber, using either iii-V based optical devices or silicon photonics, are readily available for few meters to few kilometers connectivity solutions inside the data center and between data centers, while next generation links are poised to reach 400Gb/s. In this forum, the current state-of-the-art of optical communications will be reviewed, including advances in long-haul transport, progress in silicon photonics covering transceivers, packaging, assembly and test, progress in high order modulation schemes and signal processing, description of 56Gb/s and beyond electrical serial interfaces, and closing with a presentation on optical backplane technology.

The book shows how the various paradigms of computational intelligence, employed either singly or in combination, can produce an effective structure for obtaining often vital information from ECG signals. The text is self-contained, addressing concepts, methodology, algorithms, and case studies and applications, providing the reader with the necessary background augmented with step-by-step explanation of the more advanced concepts. It is structured in three parts: Part I covers the fundamental ideas of computational intelligence together with the relevant principles of data acquisition, morphology and use in diagnosis; Part II deals with techniques and models of computational intelligence that are suitable for signal processing; andPart iii details ECG system-diagnostic interpretation and knowledge acquisition architectures. Illustrative material includes: brief numerical experiments; detailed schemes, exercises and more advanced problems.

Serra-Capizzano recently introduced anti-reflecting boundary conditions (AR-BC) for blurring models: the idea seems promising both from the computational and approximation viewpoint. The key point is that, under certain symmetry conditions, the AR-BC matrices can be essentially simultaneously diagonalized by the (fast) sine transform DST I and, moreover, a C-1 continuity at the border is guaranteed in the ID case. Here we give more details for the 2D case and we perform extensive numerical simulations which illustrate that the AR-BC, periodic and reflective BCs in certain applications. can be superior to Dirichlet.

We briefly describe a multigrid strategy for unilevel and two-level linear systems whose coefficient matrix A(n) belongs either to the Toeplitz class or to the cosine algebra of type iii and such that A(n) can be naturally associated, in the spectral sense, with a polynomial function f. The interest of the technique is due to its optimal cost of O(N) arithmetic operations, where N is the size of the algebraic problem. We remark that these structures arise in certain 2D image restoration problems or can be used as preconditioners for more complicated image restoration problems.

Over the last decade Digital signal processing (DSP) has evolved from being a term known by only a few specialists, to a household term. The growth in DSP applied in e.g., consumer, medical, communications, networking and computing devices has been spectacular. In fact, the digital signal processor market has grown 40% per year since 1988 and this figure is expected to continue over the next 10 years. At the same time the extreme improvement in hardware technologies has been paving the way for designing dedicated architectures for realtime execution of still more complex DSP algorithms, continuously decreasing the power and silicon consumption required to perform certain functionalities. Consequently, we consider advanced DSP topics as being essential in the curriculum for a still growing number of electrical engineering students. These topics are basically related to 1) the design of highly complex DSP algorithms according to given specifications, and 2) realtime implementation of these algorithms using various and conceptually different hardware architectures. Aalborg University, which has a long standing tradition for project-oriented teaching in traditional DSP theory at the Master level, therefore in 1994 launched a new Master programme in "DSP algorithms and ASIC architectures". Now, after five years of very successful execution of this programme, we in this paper would like to report on our experiences.

We present the "direct inverse scale transform" which is the extension to the "direct scale transform" method originally proposed by Williams, Zalubas and Hero iii (see advanced signal processing algorithms, architectures and Implementations VI, SPIE, vol.2846, p.262-72, 1996). This scheme completes the calculation of analysis and synthesis equations for the scale transform pair which is suitable especially for non-integer values of dilation or compression of signals. Several examples of transformed and reconstructed synthetic and real 1-D and 2-D signals are included.

Digital signal Processors (DSPs) have become key components for the implementation of digital signal processing systems. With DSPs moving into new application domains and the increasing complexity of modern DSP architectures, efficient programming support receives major interest. Therefore, an optimizing compiler becomes a must for future DSP-architectures. Todays DSP compilers result in significant overheads both in memory consumption and program execution time compared to hand-written assembly code. This is mainly due to an inefficient compiler support of the DSP specific architectural features, such as the modulo-addressing capability which is an enabling feature for a large class of DSP algorithms. Within this paper we analyze why existing compilers fail short in supporting the module-addressing mode and present a compiler concept that allows the efficient utilization of this feature. We describe how an advanced compiler optimization strategy allows a near optimum support of the module-addressing mode, and point out why this concept is favorable to DSP-specific language extensions.

This paper illustrates a vehicle imaging technique for ground traffic control applications. The imaging is performed by exploiting the vehicle motion with respect to a pair of linear arrays. The method for estimating the vehicular velocity from the data collected by one of the arrays is described, and the theoretical accuracy of the estimate is discussed in detail through the evaluation of the Rao-Cramer bound. In particular it is recognized that the maximum likelihood solution is based on the radon transform of the data. Experimental results obtained with a field operating prototype are finally shown.
