Techniques for machine recognition of speech exist, but use representations of the speech signal which cannot convey some of the speech information. Alternatives from time-frequency and time-scale analysis are compared with the traditional methods with a view to improving the word recognition rate. Experiments have shown the speech recognition rate improves in some cases.

The minimum norm Total Least Squares1,2 (TLS) solution to the linear system of equations AX = B for the case where the rank of the composite matrix [A I B] under no- noise /error -free conditions is strictly less than the number of columns in A is derived. The resulting method of solution is applied to the covariance level ESPRIT problem encountered in the field of sensor array signal processing. The TLS concept is targeted in light of the fact that the linear system of equations derived from ESPRIT at the covariance level is of the form AX = B where A and B are both in error. In contrast, conventional Least Squares only accounts for errors in B. The derivation is based on a projection operator interpretation of TLS1 analogous to the situation with conventional Least Squares in which the solution to AX = B is obtained by first projecting the columns of B onto range (A) . The projection operator approach is further utilized to derive the constrained TLS solution when certain columns of A are known to be exact, i. e., free of error. The applicability of the constrained TLS solution for this case to the problem of estimating the source covariance matrix in a uniformly -spaced linear array scenario is discussed. © 1988 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. A tree-structured wavelet transform has been developed for texture classification in our previous work. The new transform, which offers a non-redundant representation, is able to zoom into dominant frequency channels containing significant information of textures and can be interpreted as the decomposition of a 2-D function with the wavelet packet basis. In this research, we extend our work to the texture segmentation problem. A new multiscale texture segmentation algorithm based on the tree-structured wavelet transform and hierarchical fuzzy clustering technique is proposed. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the performance of our new algorithm.

The problem of linearly constrained least squares has many applications in signal processing. In this paper, we present a perturbation analysis of a novel, linearly constrained least squares algorithm for adaptive beamforming. The perturbation bounds for the solution as well as for the latest residual element are derived. We also propose an error estimation scheme for the residual element. This error estimation scheme can be incorporated into a systolic array implementation of the algorithm. The additional time required for error estimation is small, as we show how the processor idle time can be used to carry out almost all the calculations.

The algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT) provides low-cost error protection for VLSI processor arrays used in real-time digital signal processing. Several ABFT techniques (weighted check-sum) have be proposed to design fault-tolerant LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and matrix inversion. In these schemes, encoding/decoding uses either multiplication or division so that overhead is high. In this paper, we propose new encoding/decoding methods for designing fault-tolerant matrix operations. Since the new encoding/decoding methods use only additions and subtractions, the overhead of a fault-tolerant processor array can be drastically reduced.

Central to `multimedia' image processing is the desire to encode computer graphics data into a standard television signal, complete with line, field, and color subcarrier synchronizing information. The numerous incompatibilities between television and computer display standards render this operation far less trivial than it sounds to anyone who hasn't worked with both types of signals. To simplify the task of encoding computer graphics signals into standard NTSC (North America and Japan) or PAL (most of Europe) television format for display, broadcast, or recording, TRW LSI Products Inc. has introduced the two newest members of it multimedia integrated circuit family, the TMC22090 and TMC22190 digital video encoders.

A simple formulation is given for generating convolution theorems in any representation. Using this method we obtain the convolution theorem for the scale representation. We generalize the concept of invariance to any basis set and devise a method for handling linear invariant systems for arbitrary quantities. The Wiener-Khinchin theorem is generalized to arbitrary power energy densities. Also, we show how standard probability theory can be formulated in terms of signals.

The NRL FLEX processor architecture is designed for real-time radar signal processing and was described at last year's conference in the context of its original application, the Point Defense Demonstration Radar project at NRL. This paper describes the current status of the processor and the application of the same architecture to a new problem which requires a different board configuration to satisfy a different set of latency and data flow requirements.

A high resolution algorithm is presented for resolving multiple incoherent and coherent plane waves incident on an array of sensors. The incident sources may be a mixture of narrowband and broadband sources, and, the array's geometry is unrestricted. This algorithm makes use of a fundamental property associated with the signal eigenvectors of the array's spectral density matrix. Specifically, it is shown that these signal eigenvectors may be represented as linear combinations of steering vectors which identify the directions of the incident plane waves. As such, linear algebraic methods may be efficiently used to estimate the plane wave directions-of-arrivals. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the high resolution performance achieved with this new approach relative to that obtained with smoothed MUSIC and the Wang-Kaveh algorithms. © 1988 SPIE.
