The apparatus may comprise a filtration device. The system may also include a plurality of sensors configured to collect data. A portion of the sensor data may be indicative of (i) one or more characteristics of the air inhaled and/or exhaled by the user, and/or (ii) an environment in which the user is located. At least one sensor and/or the apparatus may be in communication with a processor that is configured to analyze the collected sensor data.

Plasma-Assisted Growth of β-MnO₂ Nanosystems as Gas sensors for Safety and Food Industry applications

The development of efficient sensors for security field and food quality control applications has gained an ever-increasing attention for various end-uses. In this context, this work reports on the preparation of beta-MnO2 nanosystems by plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD), using a fluorinated Mn(ii) diamine-diketonate as single-source precursor for both Mn and F. Modulations of oxygen partial pressure enable to tailor not only the morphology and oxygen vacancy content, but also fluorine doping level of the resulting systems. For the first time, the gas sensing performances of PE-CVD beta-MnO2 nanomaterials are tested in the detection of acetonitrile, a poisonous chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulant, and ethylene, an important marker of fruit ripening. The obtained results demonstrate that the fabricated sensors can efficiently detect these analytes, with the best responses at moderate temperatures (<= 200 degrees C), enhanced by a higher oxygen vacancy content and fluorine concentration. These features, coupled with the good selectivity and response times, candidate the developed systems as amenable platforms for practical applications.

Cyber Physical systems are often used in the automotive industry as embedded systems for constructing advanced Driver Assistance systems. Further development of current applications and the creation of new applications for vehicle and mobile platforms that are based on sensor fusion are essential for the future. While ADAS are used to actively participate in the controlling a vehicle, they can also be used to control mobile platforms in industry. In the article, the results of tests of different rates of data acquisition from Hall sensors to measure speed for mobile platform are presented. The purpose of the research was to determine the optimal platform parameter to indicate the refresh frequency in such a way that the measurements obtained from a Hall sensor will be reliable and will require less of the available computing power. Additionally, the results from investigations of the precise movement for a specified distance using a Hall sensor for a mobile platform are presented.

Large-scale information gathering becomes more and more common with the increasing popularity of smartphones, GPS, social networks, and sensor networks. Services based on this real-time data are the logical next step. Service Oriented Stream systems (SOSS) have a focus on one-time ad hoc queries as opposed to continuous queries. High availability is crucial in these services. However, data replication has inherent costs, which are particularly burdensome for high rate, often overloaded, SOSS. To provide high availability and to cope with the problem of overloading the system, we propose a mechanism called soft quorums. Soft quorums provide high availability of data, a tradeoff between query result accuracy and performance, and adaptation to dynamic data/query stream rates. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive experimental study using real-world and synthetic datasets.

Recent advances in sensor technologies and instrumentation have led to an extraordinary growth of data sources and streaming applications. A wide variety of devices, from smart phones to dedicated sensors, have the capability of collecting and streaming large amounts of data at unprecedented rates. A number of distinct streaming data models have been proposed. Typical applications for this include smart cites & built environments for instance, where sensor-based infrastructures continue to increase in scale and variety. Understanding how such streaming content can be processed within some time threshold remains a non-trivial and important research topic. We investigate how a cloud-based computational infrastructure can autonomically respond to such streaming content, offering Quality of Service guarantees. We propose an autonomic controller (based on feedback control and queueing theory) to elastically provision virtual machines to meet performance targets associated with a particular data stream. Evaluation is carried out using a federated Cloud-based infrastructure (implemented using CometCloud)-where the allocation of new resources can be based on: (i) differences between sites, i.e., types of resources supported (e.g., GPU versus CPU only), (ii) cost of execution;(iii) failure rate and likely resilience, etc. In particular, we demonstrate how Little's Law-a widely used result in queuing theory-can be adapted to support dynamic control in the context of such resource provisioning.

Nowadays, wireless sensor networks (WSN) play a crucial role in various fields such as the army, health, the environment, and so on. These new sensors have limitations, which must be taken into consideration when deploying a WSN network, especially their strictly limited energy. Thus, in order to efficiently use the energy of these nodes to improve and increase the lifetime of the entire network, several self-organization algorithms have been proposed to create different network architectures based on required applications. In this article, we will study and examine the various WSN-based self-organization algorithms, highlighting their principles in order to compare them according to different metrics and on multiple requirements such as load balancing, energy efficiency, complexity of the algorithm ... etc. To perform this multi-criteria comparison, we will use the ROC (Rank Order Centroid) multicriteria analysis method, to make the decision when designing and implementing a new efficient and effective self-organization algorithm that will meet all metrics and to all criteria.

Last generation consumer grade MEMS inertial sensors have several distinctive features that make their use of interest also for professional navigation applications such as the ones related to attitude determination of advanced small drones. Several advantages arise when using low-cost consumer grade MEMS gyros, such as reduced weight, compact configuration, low power consumption and easy integration with electronic boards. Conversely, some drawbacks are determined in terms of accuracy, since the overall error is more than an order of magnitude worse than industrial grade sensors. To improve the accuracy of inertial units based on commercial grade MEMS gyros, redundancy is exploited in this paper. It consists in adopting a skewed sensors configuration, i.e. a defined number of sensors placed on the faces of a regular polyhedron. This configuration guarantees the self-calibration of the bias of sensors placed on opposite faces of the polyhedron. To test the proposed method, the world's densest sensor board, the sensorTile (TM), by ST Microelectronics (TM) has been adopted. Test results show that, by averaging multiple measurements about the same axis, the overall level of accuracy in flight attitude determination will be improved.

Epidemic data survivability in Unattended Wireless sensor Networks: New models and results

Unattended Wireless sensor Networks (UWSNs), characterized by the intermittent presence of the sink, are exposed to attacks aiming at tampering with the sensors and the data they store. In order to prevent an adversary from erasing any sensed data before the sink collects them, it is common practice to rely on data replication. However, identifying the most suitable replication rate is challenging: data should be redundant enough to avoid data loss, but not so much as to pose an excessive burden on the limited resources of the sensors. As noted before in the literature, this problem is similar to finding the minimum infection rate that makes a disease endemic in a population. Yet, unlike previous attempts to leverage on this parallelism, we argue that model and system parameters must be carefully bound according to conservative and realistic assumptions on the behavior of the network, further taking into account possible statistical fluctuations. In this paper, we therefore refine the connection between the Susceptible, Infected, Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model and the survivability of sensed data in UWSNs. In particular, based on probabilistic data replication and deletion rates, we identify proper conditions to guarantee that sensed information become endemic. In both the full visibility model (i.e. unlimited transmission range) and the geometric one (i.e. limited transmission range), the proposed approach achieves: (i) data survivability, (ii) optimal usage of sensors resources, and (iii) fast collecting time. Building on advanced probabilistic tools, we provide theoretically sound results, that are further supported by an extensive experimental campaign performed on synthetically generated networks. Obtained results show the quality of our model and viability of the proposed solution.

Building space accounts for one of the largest operational costs for companies. While space management has traditionally been done based on human observations, technology solutions are increasingly been considered. In this paper, we consider advanced sensing systems that provide location data at a certain spatio-temporal granularity. Location data analytics is then considered to realize two space management applications: (i) space utilization, and (ii) workspace recommendation. Towards this end, location data is processed to determine potential workspaces. The processed historic location data is used to compute defined metrics that characterize space utilization. Filtering of real-time location data is presented to recommend workspaces that may be potentially unoccupied and present to a user. Using datasets from an experimental office testbed, we evaluate the proposed sensing and analytics solution.
