The Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM) aims to establish and demonstrate a global, long-term satellite-observing system to measure essential geophysical parameters to facilitate understanding the global water circulation and climate change, and eventually contribute to improving future climate projection through a collaborative framework with climate model institutions. GCOM consists of two polar orbiting satellite observing systems, GCOM-W (Water) and GCOM-C (Climate). The first satellite, GCOM-W with Advance Microwave Radiometer -2 (AMSR-2), was already launched in 2012 and has been observing continuously. The follower satellite, GCOM-C with Second Generation Global Imager (SGLI), will be launched in Japanese fiscal year 2017. SGLI enables a new generation of operational moderate resolution-imaging capabilities following the legacy of the GLI on ADEOS-ii (advanced Earth Observing Satellite-ii) satellite. The SGLI empowers surface and atmospheric measurements related to the carbon cycle and radiation budget, with two radiometers of Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer (VNR) and Infrared Scanning Radiometer (IRS) which perform a wide-band (380nm-12 mu m) optical observation not only with as wide as 1150-1400km FOV (field of view) but also with as high as 250-500m resolution. Also, polarization and along-track slant view observation are quite characteristic of SGLI, providing the sensor data records for more than 28 standard products and 23 research products including clouds, aerosols, ocean color, vegetation, snow and ice, and other applications. sensor instrument proto-flight tests including optical characterization tests such as radiometric and geometric were completed, and satellite system proto-flight tests have finished including thermal vacuum, vibration and acoustic test. Pacific advanced Technology (PAT) has developed an infrared hyperspectral camera, both MWIR and LWIR, small enough to serve as a payload on a miniature unmanned aerial vehicles. The optical system has been integrated into the cold-shield of the sensor enabling the small size and weight of the sensor. This new and innovative approach to infrared hyperspectral imaging spectrometer uses micro-optics and will be explained in this paper. The micro-optics are made up of an area array of diffractive optical elements where each element is tuned to image a different spectral region on a common focal plane array. The lenslet array is embedded in the cold-shield of the sensor and actuated with a miniature piezo-electric motor. This approach enables rapid infrared spectral imaging with multiple spectral images collected and processed simultaneously each frame of the camera. This paper will present our optical mechanical design approach which results in an infrared hyper-spectral imaging system that is small enough for a payload on a mini-UAV or commercial quadcopter. The diffractive optical elements used in the lenslet array are blazed gratings where each lenslet is tuned for a different spectral bandpass. The lenslets are configured in an area array placed a few millimeters above the focal plane and embedded in the cold-shield to reduce the background signal normally associated with the optics. We have developed various systems using a different number of lenslets in the area array. Depending on the size of the focal plane and the diameter of the lenslet array will determine the spatial resolution. A 2 x 2 lenslet array will image four different spectral images of the scene each frame and when coupled with a 512 x 512 focal plane array will give spatial resolution of 256 x 256 pixel each spectral image. The phenomenon of dark counts in nanostripes of different superconductor systems such as high-temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x and superconductor/ferromagnet hybrids consisting of either NbN/NiCu or YBa2Cu3O7-x/L0.7Sr0.3MnO3 bilayers have been investigated. For NbN/NiCu the rate of dark-count transients have been reduced with respect to pure NbN nanostripes and the events were dominated by a single vortex entry from the edge of the stripe. In the case of nanostripes based on YBa2Cu3O7-x, we have found that thermal activation of vortices was also, apparently, responsible for triggering dark-count signals.

Over the last decades the population in developed countries is becoming increasingly older, while the life expectancy is growing supported on medical advances. In despite of such progress, how to support older adults to continue living independently and retaining their current lifestyle is becoming a social problem. Through the careful placement of technological support, elders can continue living in their own homes longer and thus, maintaining and enhancing their quality of life. In this paper we present an AI-based system that integrates a (i) Wireless sensor Network for receiving information of the environment and the dependent person, (ii) an autonomous robot able to take decisions based on the received information, and (iii) a Web-based system to provide telecare assistance. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

The apparatus may comprise a filtration device. The system may also include a plurality of sensors configured to collect data. At least one sensor and/or the apparatus may be in communication with a processor that is configured to analyze the collected sensor data.

The emergence of the Internet of Things in Smart Cities questions how the future citizens will perceive their predominant living and working environments and what quality of living they can experience within it, for instance the level of everyday stress. However, perception and experienced stress levels are challenging metrics to measure and are even more challenging to correlate with an underlying causal-effectual relationship in such stimulus abundant environments. The Internet of Things, enabled by several pervasive and ubiquitous devices such as smart phones and smart sensors, can provide real-time contextual information that can be used by advanced data science methodologies to generate new insights about urban qualities in Smart Cities and how they can be improved. The goal of this study is to show the predominant factors, which influence perceptual qualities of inhabitants in a Smart City equipped with sensing capabilities by the Internet of Things. To serve this goal, a novel data collection process for Smart Cities is introduced that involves (i) environmental data, such noise, dust, illuminance, temperature, relative humidity, (ii) location/mobility data, such as GNSS and citizens density detected via WiFi, and (iii) perceptual social data collected by citizens' responses in smart phones. These fine-grained real-time data can provide invaluable insights about the spatial correlations of the sensor measurements as well as the spatial and citizens' similarity illustrated. The data analysis illustrated reveals significant links between stress level and environmental changes observed.

Printing is a promising manufacturing approach for the fabrication of flexible, large-area, custom sensor systems for applications such as wearable electronics and sensor labels. While printed examples of many physical and chemical sensors have been demonstrated, functionality useful for stand-alone systems such as high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion and wireless communication to address these sensors is not currently available in circuits printed entirely from solution. In order to retain the benefits of print manufacturing without sacrificing performance, a hybrid approach can be followed where printed and pre-fabricated devices are used together. In this report a mostly-printed wireless light and temperature sensor system that operates at 3.6 V and reports light and temperature readings wirelessly with a sensitivity of 0.7 degrees C and 2.5 mu W cm(-2) at 500 nm respectively is demonstrated. The number of printed components was maximized and off-the-shelf microfabricated devices were only introduced where functionality is not currently achievable through printing. Onto a flexible polyester substrate, print processes were used to fabricate the bulk-heterojunction photodiode, thermistor, low-voltage operation multiplexing transistors, antenna, passives and interconnects, and silicon ICs are used for signal processing, memory and wireless communication. The printed components (sensors and transistors) were specifically developed to facilitate electrical integration into the hybrid system.

advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) are electronic systems, present on modern vehicles, which enhance the road safety by providing assistance on the driving act. These systems are usually associated with semi-autonomous and expensive vehicles. Oppositely, yet affordable, modern smartphones, endowed with an operating system, are capable of providing a high computational power allied to multiple embedded sensors and wireless connection capabilities. Hence, these devices are a convenient and practical platform to use as a smart sensor and driving assistance for intelligent vehicles. This paper presents two of the broad range of practical applications that regards this approach: I) A vehicle data recorder and ii) A road segmentation application. Furthermore, other applications are going to be discussed.
