This paper presents the results of up to date investigations in the field of Obstacle Tracking System for Sense and Avoid applications of Unmanned Aerial systems. In particular it highlights the most recent trends in this field, such as the adoption of advanced Multi sensor Data Fusion techniques in order to increase the awareness on the information of a collision threat and the adoption of lightweight onboard system architectures that can meet the requirements for installation onboard small Unmanned Aerial systems. As a result of the experience with flight testing for a prototypical Sense and Avoid System developed within the framework of a project of the Italian Aerospace Research Centre, some advanced solutions have been proposed to solve the above reported issues. In particular, the adoption of Particle Filtering for realizing Multi-sensor Data Fusion has been considered in order to get reliable and accurate estimates of the collision threat, such increasing flight awareness. A customized version of the Particle Filter has been developed and tested by exploiting data acquired during flight tests. Moreover, a specific study has been carried out considering the issues for the realization of an adequate Sense and Avoid system for small Unmanned Aerial System. An integrated configuration that includes ADS-B and Electro Optical sensor has been identified as the most effective solutions standing Sense and Avoid requirements. This solution requires that a great effort is put on software both in terms of data fusion algorithms and real time image processing. The results of this study are described at the end of the paper.

The requirements for advanced EO/IR sensor technologies are discussed in the context of evolving military operations, with significant emphasis on the development of new sensing technologies to meet the challenges posed by asymmetric threats. The Electro-Magnetic Remote Sensing (EMRS DTC) was established in 2003 to provide a centre of excellence in sensor research and development, supporting new capabilities in key military areas such as precision attack, battlespace manoeuvre and information superiority. In the area of advanced electro-optic technology, the DTC has supported work on discriminative imaging, advanced detectors, laser components/technologies, and novel optical techniques. This paper provides a summary of some of the EO/IR technologies explored by the DTC.

MScMS-ii: an innovative IR-based indoor coordinate measuring system for large-scale metrology applications

According to the current great interest concerning large-scale metrology applications in many different fields of manufacturing industry, technologies and techniques for dimensional measurement have recently shown a substantial improvement. Ease-of-use, logistic and economic issues, as well as metrological performance are assuming a more and more important role among system requirements. This paper describes the architecture and the working principles of a novel infrared (IR) optical-based system, designed to perform low-cost and easy indoor coordinate measurements of large-size objects. The system consists of a distributed network-based layout, whose modularity allows fitting differently sized and shaped working volumes by adequately increasing the number of sensing units. Differently from existing spatially distributed metrological instruments, the remote sensor devices are intended to provide embedded data elaboration capabilities, in order to share the overall computational load. The overall system functionalities, including distributed layout configuration, network self-calibration, 3D point localization, and measurement data elaboration, are discussed. A preliminary metrological characterization of system performance, based on experimental testing, is also presented.

Development of Film sensors Based on Conjugated Polymers for Copper (ii) Ion Detection

A fluorescent film sensor was prepared by chemical modification of a polyfluorene derivative on a glass-plate surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements demonstrate the covalent attachment of the polyfluorene derivative to the glass-plate surface. The sensor was used to detect Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution by a mechanism exploiting fluorescence quenching of conjugated polymers. Among the tested metal ions, the film sensor presents good selectivity towards Cu2+ ions. Further experiments show that the sensing process is reversible. Moreover, sensory microarrays based on conjugated polymers targeting Cu2+ ions are constructed, which display similar sensing performance to that of the film sensor. The structural motif in which conjugated polymers are covalently confined to a solid substrate surface offers several attractive advantages for sensing applications. First, in comparison with film sensors in which small fluorescent molecules are employed as sensing elements, the sensitivity of our new film sensor is enhanced due to the signal-amplifying effect of the conjugated polymers. Second, the film sensors or microarrays can be used in aqueous environments, which is crucial for their potential use in a wide range of real-world systems. Since the sensing process is reversible, the sensing materials can be reused. Third, unlike physically coated polymer chains, the covalent attachment of the grafted chains onto a material surface precludes desorption and imparts long-term stability of the polymer chains.

As embedded sensing systems are central to developing pervasive, context-aware services, the applications running on these systems should be intelligible to system programmers and to users. Given that sensor systems are programmed in low-level languages, manually writing high-level explanations about their decision model requires knowledge about the system architecture, and is error-prone. We explore the possibility of extracting explanations which are small and expressive, but still preserve bit-level accuracy when needed. We contribute a tool which automatically and soundly generates compact, graphical explanations from sensor software implementation at compile-time. We base our algorithm on the techniques of (i) finite-state machine model extraction from software as used in model checking, and (ii) abstraction of program execution traces. We experiment with extracting explanations from heavyweight, low-level TinyOS applications for a mainstream sensor platform.

The design of modern Information Fusion (IF) systems involves a complex process to achieve the requirements in the selected applications, especially in domains with a high degree of customization. In general, an advanced fusion system is required to show robust, context-sensitive behavior and efficient performance in real time. It is necessary to exploit all potentially relevant sensor and contextual information in the most appropriate way. Among modern applications for IF technology is the case of surveillance of complex harbor environments that are comprised of large numbers of surface vessels, high-value and dangerous facilities, and many people. The particular conditions and open needs in the harbor scenario are reviewed in this paper, highlighting research opportunities to explore in the development of fusion systems in this area.

In wireless sensor networks, node failures occur frequently. The effects of these failures can be reduced by using aggregated values of small groups of sensors instead of the values of individual sensors. However, most existing works have focused on computing the aggregation of all the nodes without grouping. Only a few approaches proposed the processing of grouped aggregate queries. However, since groups in their approaches are disjoint, some relevant regions to the query can be missing. In this paper, we propose REQUEST, region-based query processing in sensor networks. A region in our approach is defined as a maximal set of nodes located within a circle having a diameter specified in the query. To efficiently construct a large number of regions covering the entire monitoring field, we build the SEC (Smallest Enclosing Circle) index. Moreover, in order to process a region-based query, we adapt a hierarchical aggregation method, in which there is a leader for each region. To reduce the communication cost, we formulate an optimal leader selection problem and transform the problem into the set-cover problem. Finally, we devise a query-initiated routing tree for the communication between the leader and non-leader nodes in a region. In the experimental results, we show that the result of our region-based query is more reliable than that of the query which is based on individual nodes, and our processing method is more energy-efficient than existing methods for processing grouped aggregate queries.

The Navy recently began investing in the design of mission-specific payloads for the Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (STUAS). STUAS is a Tier ii size UAS with a roughly 35 pound mission payload and a gimbaled general-purpose electro optical/infrared (EO/IR) system. The EO/IR system is likely composed of a video camera in the visible, a mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and/or a long-wave infrared (LWIR) for night operations, and an infrared marker and laser range finder. advanced Coherent Technologies, LLC (ACT), in a series of SBIR efforts, has developed a modular, multi-channel imaging system for deployment on airborne and UAV platforms. ACT's system, called EYE5, demonstrates how an EO/IR system combined with an on-board, real-time processor can be tailored for specific applications to produce real-time actionable data. The EYE5 sensor head and modular real-time processor descriptions are presented in this work. Examples of the system's abilities in various Navy-relevant applications are reviewed.

Congestion in a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) can cause packet loss, low energy efficiency, and long delay. Moreover, some applications, e.g. multimedia and image, need to transmit large volumes of data concurrently from several sensors. These applications have different delay and QoS requirements. Congestion problem is more significant in such applications. To address this challenge, we propose an energy efficient congestion control scheme for sensor networks called ECODA (Enhanced Congestion Detection and Avoidance) which comprises two mechanisms: (i) Use dual buffer thresholds and weighted buffer difference for congestion detection;(ii) Dynamically estimate channel loading and optimize channel utilization. Simulations show that ECODA achieves efficient congestion control and flexible weighted fairness for different class of traffic. Therefore it leads to higher energy efficiency and better QoS in terms of throughput, fairness, and delay. © 2011 IEEE.
