Congestion in a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) can cause packet loss, low energy efficiency, and long delay. Moreover, some applications, e.g. multimedia and image, need to transmit large volumes of data concurrently from several sensors. These applications have different delay and QoS requirements. Congestion problem is more significant in such applications. To address this challenge, we propose an energy efficient congestion control scheme for sensor networks called ECODA (Enhanced Congestion Detection and Avoidance) which comprises two mechanisms: (i) Use dual buffer thresholds and weighted buffer difference for congestion detection; (ii) Dynamically estimate channel loading and optimize channel utilization. Simulations show that ECODA achieves efficient congestion control and flexible weighted fairness for different class of traffic. Therefore it leads to higher energy efficiency and better QoS in terms of throughput, fairness, and delay.

CIRP has had a long history of research and publication on the development and implementation of sensor monitoring of machining operations including tool condition monitoring, unmanned machining, process control and, more recently, advanced topics in machining monitoring, innovative signal processing, sensor fusion and related applications. This keynote follows a recent update of the literature on tool condition monitoring and documents the work of the cutting scientific technical committee in CIRP. The paper reviews the past contributions of CIRP in these areas and provides an up-to-date comprehensive survey of sensor technologies, signal processing, and decision making strategies for process monitoring. Application examples to industrial processes including reconfigurable sensor systems are reported. Future challenges and trends in sensor based machining operation monitoring are presented. Wireless sensor networks have been used to gather data and information in many diverse application settings. The capacity of such networks remains a fundamental obstacle toward the adaptation of sensor network systems for advanced applications that require higher data rates and throughput. In this paper, we explore potential benefits of integrating directional antennas into wireless sensor networks. While the usage of directional antennas has been investigated in the past for ad hoc networks, their usage in sensor networks bring both opportunities as well as challenges. In this paper, Sectored-Antenna Medium Access Control (SAMAC), an integrated cross-layer protocol that provides the communication mechanisms for sensor network to fully utilize sectored antennas, is introduced. Simulation studies show that SAMAC delivers high energy efficiency and predictable delay performance with graceful degradation in performance with increased load.

In this paper, we report a new facile method for the synthesis of water-soluble PbS quantum dots (QDs), using dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) as a stabilizer. The prepared QDs were characterized by optical techniques and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Next, these water-soluble luminescent PbS QDs were further used to detect copper (ii). The obtained experimental results show that the fluorescence of the PbS QDs could be markedly quenched by Cu(ii) whereas approximate concentrations of other physiologically relevant cations, such as Zn(ii), Ca(ii), Mg(ii), Mn(ii), Na(I) and K(I) etc., almost did not interfere with the fluorescence quenching progress of copper ions. Based on this, a simple and rapid method for Cu(ii) determination was developed. Under optimal conditions, the response was linearly proportional to the copper(ii) concentration in the range of 1 to 11.5x10(-8) mol.L-1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.995. Hence, aqueous DHLA-stabilized PbS QDs may be a promising fluorescent probe in sensing copper(ii) selectively.

According to the requirement of single-component toxic gases recognition and trace concentration measurement, a novel gas-sensitive sensor array is developed, which chooses metallic porphyrin as sensitive material. Moreover, the multi-spot sensor array detector is designed based on the absorption spectrum measurement and multi-spot measurement. This paper focuses on the structural design of the system and the establishment of the spectral analysis method. The model of after-spectrophotometric structure is adopted by the detector. The entire hardware platform is implemented based on S3C44B0 & mu C/OS-ii embedded system. In addition, this paper puts forward a recognition model, which combines Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with BP Artificial Neural Networks (BPANN), and an algorithm for trace concentration measurement, based on visible light absorption spectrum analysis. The experimental results show that the correct rate of prediction for 50 unknown samples is 98%, and the maximum relative measuring error is 3%.

Recently, global warming is a serious problem all over the world. Japan endeavors to promote using bicycles in order to protect environment. We developed a system for supporting cyclists by using the data from a bike sensor network. Cyclists lose comfort of riding when they need to go through crowded streets. We collect riding information obtained with a gyro sensor attached to handlebars of a bicycle. Based on such information, we then extract riding condition of cyclists. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Human Probe system that can collect and store sensor data to show comfortable cycling routes on a map.

The problem of on-board intersection perception and modeling is complex and requires a wide field of view, dense and accurate data acquisition and processing, robust object detection and classification and fast response time. This goal can be achieved by using a large and redundant set of heterogeneous sensors and by fusing their information. Among the on-board sensors the visual sensors have the following main advantages: they are passive, and they provide the highest volume of information. The use of a pair of visual sensors in stereo configuration opens not only the possibility to infer the 3D coordinates for any image point but also the possibility to compute the 3D motion vector for any pixel. The exploitation of the motion information in driving assistance systems requires the estimation of the ego motion. This paper presents the architecture, implementation and use of a powerful on-board 6D visual sensor for intersection driving assistance.

A SELF-SUPPORTED 40W DIRECT METHANOL FUEL CELL (DMFC) SYSTEM

A self-supported 40W Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) system has been developed and benchmarked for its performance. The system consists of a DMFC stack comprising 15-cells with an electrode area of 45cm(2), and auxiliaries comprising a methanol sensor, a liquid-level indicator, fuel and air pumps that consume a total power of about 5W. The self-supported system addresses issues (a) related to water recovery from the cathode exhaust, (b) maintaining a constant methanol-feed-concentration, and (c) the thermal management in the system. Methanol and water are pumped to the methanol-mixing tank where the liquid level is monitored and controlled with the help of a liquid-level indicator. During the operation, concentration of methanol in the solution at the outlet of the stack is monitored, and required amount of methanol is added in the feed tank to restore the initial concentration employing a methanol-loop system connected to a methanol sensor that helps monitoring and controlling the system output at a steady value;product water from cathode is recovered and re-circulated for diluting the methanol feed as desired. The feed-rate requirements of methanol fuel and oxidant air are optimized for the stack capacity of 40W. The salient features of the system are: (i) flexible and modular construction, (ii) controlled-output power and (ii) easy start-up and stop. The self-supported DMFC system is ideally suited for military and aerospace applications.
