The Orbital Express flight demonstration was established by the Defense advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and validate key technologies required for cost-effective servicing of next-,generation satellites. A contractor team led by Boeing advanced Network and Space systems built two mated spacecraft launched atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on March 8, 2007. The low earth orbit test flight demonstrated on orbit transfer of hydrazine propellant, transfer of a spare battery between spacecraft and the ability to replace a spacecraft computer on orbit. It also demonstrated autonomous rendezvous and capture (AR&C) using advanced sensor, guidance, and relative navigation hardware and software. This paper summarizes the results of the on-orbit performance testing of the ARCSS (Autonomous Rendezvous and Capture sensor System). ARCSS uses onboard visible, infrared and laser rangefinder sensors to provide real time data and imagery to the onboard sensor computer. The Boeing-developed Vis-STAR(2) software executing on the sensor computer uses the ARCSS data to provide precision real-time client bearing, range and attitude as needed, from long range to soft capture. The paper summarizes the ARCSS and Vis-STAR on orbit performance.

Nanoscale membrane strips for benign sensing of Hgⁱⁱ ions:: A route to commercial waste treatments

The integration of actively-functional receptors into nanoscale networks outperformed competent detection devices and other ion-sensing designs. Synthesis of azo chromophores with long hydrophobic tails showed an ecofriendly sensing and an extreme selectivity for divalent mercury analytes. In order to tailor the tip to Hg-ii ion-sensing functionality, we manipulated the chromophores into nanoscale membrane discs, which led to small, easy-to-use optical sensor strips. The design of these hydrophobic probes into ordered pore-based membranes transformed the ion-sensing systems into smart, stable assemblies and portable laboratory assays. The nanosensor membrane strips with chemical and mechanical stability allowed for reversible, stable and reusable detectors without any structural damage, even under rigorous chemical treatment for several numbers of repeated cycles. The optical membrane strips provided Hg-ii ion-sensing recognition for both cost- and energy-saving systems. Indeed, the synthetic strips proved to have an efficient ability for various analytical applications, targeting especially for on-site and in situ chemical analyses, and for continuous monitoring of toxic Hg-ii ions. On the proximity-sensing front, these miniaturized nanomembrane strips can revolutionize the consumer and industrial market with the introduction of the probe surface-mount naked-eye ion-sensor strips.

Hydra is a modular autonomous rendezvous and docking (AR&D) sensor system for use on orbit. It uses multiple sensor heads that feed data to a single processing module, allowing the system to be configured according to mission needs. The modularity also decreases the required amount of external real estate, since the processing electronics can be internal to spacecraft. advanced Optical systems has built an initial Hydra prototype that includes an advanced Video Guidance sensor (AVGS) and ULTOR sensor head. The AVGS sensor head provides laser-based active measurement of distance and orientation, while the ULTOR sensor head provides passive measurement of the same. We have tested the Hydra prototype in the Marshall Space Flight Center's Flight Robotics Laboratory. In this paper we describe the Hydra prototype and present the results of ground testing the sensor system.

The advanced Linked Extended Reconnaissance & Targeting (ALERT) Technology Demonstration (TD) project is addressing many operational needs of the future Canadian Army's Surveillance and Reconnaissance forces. Using the surveillance system of the Coyote reconnaissance vehicle as an experimental platform, the ALERT TD project aims to significantly enhance situational awareness by fusing multi-sensor and tactical data, developing automated processes, and integrating beyond line-of-sight sensing. The project is. exploiting important advances made in computer processing capability, displays technology, digital communications, and sensor technology since the design of the original surveillance system. As the major research area within the project, concepts are discussed for displaying and fusing multi-sensor and tactical data within an Enhanced Operator Control Station (EOCS). The sensor data can originate from the Coyote's own visible-band and IR cameras, laser rangefinder, and ground-surveillance radar, as well as from beyond line-of-sight systems such as mini-UAVs and unattended ground sensors. Video-rate image processing has been developed to assist the operator to detect poorly visible targets. As a second major area of research, automatic target cueing capabilities have been added to the system. These include scene change detection, automatic target detection and aided target recognition algorithms processing both IR and visible-band images to draw the operator's attention to possible targets. The merits of incorporating scene change detection algorithms are also discussed. In the area of multi-sensor data fusion, up to Joint Defence Labs level 2 has been demonstrated. The human factors engineering aspects of the user interface in this complex environment are presented, drawing upon multiple user group sessions with military surveillance system operators. In this second of a multi-paper series latency-information theory (LIT), the integration of information theory with its time dual, i.e., latency theory, is successfully applied to DARPA's knowledge aided sensor signal processing expert reasoning (KASSPER) program. LIT encapsulates the concept of the time dual of a lossy source coder, i.e., a lossy processor coder. A lossy processor coder is a replacement for a signal-processor. This lossy processor coder is faster, simpler to implement, and yields a better performance than the original signal-processor when the processor input appears in a highly compressed-decompressed lossy fashion. In particular, a lossy clutter covariance processor (CCP) architecture is investigated that has successfully replaced KASSPER's originally advanced lossless CCP and enabled its SAR imagery prior knowledge to be highly compressed-decompressed. This result is illustrated with a typical SAR image which is compressed-decompressed by a factor 8,172. Using this image and under severely taxing environmental disturbances outstanding detections are achieved with the lossy CCP. Furthermore, this result is derived with a lossy CCP that is at least five orders of magnitude faster and significantly simpler to implement than the corresponding lossless CCP whose SINR detection performance is nevertheless unsatisfactory. As a final comment it is also observed that LIT illuminates biological system studies since it provides a lossy mechanism that explains how outstanding detections may be arrived at by biological systems that use highly lossy compressed prior knowledge, e.g., when a human expertly detects a face seen only once before even though that face cannot be accurately described prior to such new viewing.

Next generation systems for critical infrastructure protection must Support capabilities such as behavior analysis, situation modeling and data mining integrated within sophisticated virtual or augmented reality interfaces. This paper describes the design goals and implementation of a platform for critical infrastructure security applications. The platform is designed to support semi-automated 3D modeling of infrastructures, 3D integration of sensor networks, situation modeling and visual simulation via 3D animation, and advanced situation analysis. Such a system would enable operators to recognize preliminary indications of crisis situations and promptly activate the appropriate countermeasures. It would also assist them in optimizing normal operations and conducting simulations for emergency planning and crisis management.

Since its adoption as a new encryption standard by NIST, the advanced Encryption Standard (AES) has become the default choice for various security services in many applications. On the other hand, a straightforward hardware implementation of the AES may not satisfy the tight constraints of several resource limited devices such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and tiny sensor networks. In this paper, we explore several area optimization options for the AES. Our area optimized implementation for AES-128 ECB encryption/decryption engine requires 2732 slices of a Xilinx Virtex-ii XC2V1000bg575, runs at a maximum clock speed of 98.95 MHz and produces a throughput of up to 29.32 Mbps.

In this tutorial, we have only considered velocity controllers. It is convenient for most of classical robot arms. However, the dynamics of the robot must of course be taken into account for high speed tasks, or when we deal with mobile nonholo- nomic or underactuated robots. As for the sensor, we have only considered geometrical features coming from a classical perspective camera. Features related to the image motion or coming from other vision sensors (fish-eye camera, catadiop- tric camera, echographic probes, etc.) necessitate to revisit the modeling issues to select adequate visual features. Finally, fus- ing visual features with data coming from other sensors (force sensor, proximetry sensors, etc.) at the level of the control scheme will allow to address new research topics. Numerous ambitious applications of visual servoing can also be consid- ered, as well as for mobile robots in indoor or outdoor envi- ronments, for aerial, space, and submarine robots, and in medical robotics. The end of fruitful research in the field of visual servo is thus nowhere yet in sight.
