A new, photon-sensitive, imaging array, the active pixel sensor (APS) has emerged as a competitor to the CCD imager for use in star and target trackers. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has undertaken a program to develop a new generation, highly integrated, APS-based, multipurpose tracker: the Programmable Intelligent Microtracker (PIM). The supporting hardware used in the PIM has been carefully selected to enhance the inherent advantages of the APS. Adequate computation power is included to perform star identification, star tracking, attitude determination, space docking, feature tracking, descent imaging for landing control, and target tracking capabilities. Its first version uses a JPL developed 256×256-pixel APS and an advanced 32-bit RISC microcontroller. By taking advantage of the unique features of the APS/microcontroller combination, the microtracker will achieve about an order-of-magnitude reduction in mass and power consumption compared to present state-of-the-art star trackers. It will also add the advantage of programmability to enable it to perform a variety of star, other celestial body, and target tracking tasks. The PIM is already proving the usefulness of its design concept for space applications. It is demonstrating the effectiveness of taking such an integrated approach in building a new generation of high performance, general purpose, tracking instruments to be applied to a large variety of future space missions.

The basic physical principles underlying three common techniques for the vicarious calibration of the post-launch performance of meteorological satellite sensors are briefly reviewed. The techniques considered are: (a) using ''radiometrically stable'' desert calibration targets which yield relative degradation rates;(b) congruent path aircraft/satellite radiance measurements which yield absolute calibrations;and (C) radiative transfer model simulation methods which yield absolute calibrations. The applications of the three techniques will be illustrated, using the visible( Channel 1: approximate to 0.58-0.68 mu m) and near-infrared( Channel 2: approximate to 0.72-1.1 mu m) channels of the advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR) flown on the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites(POES) as an example. The establishment of inter-satellite calibration linkages, and cross-satellite sensor calibration will be briefly mentioned.

The Integrated Optics Rotation sensor (IORS) is a rugged, lightweight, and low cost gyro instrument which is currently being sponsored by the Defense advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under funding from Small Business Innovative Research/Technology Reinvestment (SBIR/TRP) Program. It uses glass-on-silicon optical waveguide technology. The design of the IORS is quite simple, and can potentially be adapted to a number of military and commercial applications, including yaw rate sensing for an antiskid safety device in automobiles, rotation rate sensing for robotics, weapon aiming, and guidance of smart munitions. The basic design is presented, along with preliminary performance specifications for an IORS prototype. The characteristics of the IORS is also compared to other gyros in terms of performance, size, weight, and price.

There is an increasing interest in millimeter-wave radar sensors for automotive applications, passenger-comfort traffic-safety will be the main distinctive feature for car manufacturers in markets. Radar systems at millimeter-wave frequencies allow small antennas with high resolution well into the front of a passenger car. Over and above radar sensors for automotive applications autonomous intelligent cruise control and collision avoidance radar open up a relevant volume market millimeter-wave technology. In this paper the concept of an automotive imaging radar will be The sensor is a fully polarimetric, coherent 76 GHz radar having an electronically obtained resolution based on a focal plane array concept. Using advanced GaAs-based circuits all the blocks necessary for the realization of the radar have been designed, assembled, and tested. the modules and the obtained results as well as the integration of the complete radar sensor will described. A sequence of radar images of traffic scenarios has been measured and processed with developed algorithms.

Three-dimensional imaging provides important profile information not available with conventional two-dimensional image products. Profile information can be extremely valuable for industrial-inspection and remote target-characterization applications. In this paper, we discuss a novel imaging modality, called PROCLAIM, that utilizes the powerful constraint that opaque objects can be described by a two-dimensional surface embedded in three-dimensional space. Far-field Fourier intensity measurements are collected by flood-illuminating an object with a frequency-tunable laser and direct detecting the backscattered signal with a lensless sensor. This technique allows for precise, non-contact surface measurements, without the stringent coherence and mechanical stability requirements of related interferometric techniques. We present reconstruction results from simulated data and from laboratory measurements.

During the fifty years since its initial development as a means of providing early warning of airborne attacks against allied countries during World War ii, radar systems have developed to the point of being highly mobile and versatile systems capable of supporting a wide variety of remote sensing applications. Instead of being tied to stationary land-based sites, radar systems have found their way into highly mobile land vehicles as well as into aircraft, missiles, and ships of all sizes. Of all these applications, however, the most exciting revolution has occurred in the airborne platform arena where advanced technology radars can be found in all shapes and sizes...ranging from the large AWACS and Joint STARS long range surveillance and targeting systems to small millimeter wave multi-spectral sensors on smart weapons that can detect and identify their targets through the use of highly sophisticated digital signal processing hardware and software. This paper presents an overview of these radar applications with the emphasis on modern airborne sensors that span the RF spectrum. It will identify and describe the factors that influence the parameters of low frequency and ultra wide band radars designed to penetrate ground and dense foliage environments and locate within them buried mines, enemy armor, and other concealed or camouflaged weapons of war. It will similarly examine the factors that lead to the development of airborne radar systems that support long range extended endurance airborne surveillance platforms designed to detect and precision-located both small high speed airborne threats as well as highly mobile time critical moving and stationary surface vehicles. The mission needs and associated radar design impacts will be contrasted with those of radar systems designed for high maneuverability rapid acquisition tactical strike warfare platforms, and shorter range cued air-to-surface weapons with integral smart radar sensors.

This dissertation describes the development of nonlinear controllers for mechatronic systems--dynamic systems controlled using advanced computing hardware and algorithms tailored to the dynamics of that specific system. The objective was to develop new nonlinear control algorithms for electrically driven mechanical systems that force the system to follow a specified desired trajectory, compensate for the electrical and mechanical dynamics, and require a minimal number of sensors for implementation. Such designs are hampered by the fact that no standardized design methods are available for nonlinear systems and by the fact that the electrical dynamics of each type of electric actuator are different. Two design approaches were investigated to reduce the number of sensors required in a control algorithm: (i) design of an observer that attempts to mimic the system behavior, and (ii) design of filters which attempt to extract state information from available measurements by approximately differentiating the filter input. The integrator backstepping control design approach used in conjunction with a Lyapunov type stability analysis provided the mathematical framework for constructing and verifying both observer and filter designs. Initial research was focused on the reduction of sensors in a single actuator system. The observed integrator backstepping was first applied to the wound field DC electric motor. Specifically, a nonlinear observer and a nonlinear integrator back stepping controller were developed to control the velocity of an inertial load driven by a series connected wound field DC motor. The proposed controller and velocity observer only require current measurements (i.e., sensorless velocity control). A similar approach was followed to design a nonlinear controller for position tracking of a permanent magnet stepper motor in low-speed applications, e.g., robotics. The Phillips Laboratory advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) comprises an observatory facility, a united computer network, a 3.63 meter telescope, and an associated sensor suite that will become operational beginning in 1997. Space Object Identification (SOI) is the primary mission for AEOS;however, astronomical applications and other visiting experiments are readily supported by the system design. The AEOS sensor suite functions derive from Air Force Space Command requirements, and incorporate high resolution imagery and multi-band radiometry performed over a broad range of wavelengths. Data collection capabilities are optimized for the rapid temporal variations in observed target brightness that arise from both intrinsic target variability and changing atmospheric characteristics during the course of an observation. Multi-spectral photometry/radiometry over the 0.4-23 mu m spectral region constitutes the principal observational technique for spatially unresolved targets. Thermal infrared wavelengths, i.e., 4-23 mu m, permit observation of targets that are in the shadow of the earth, and provide temperature measurements on all targets. High resolution visible to near-infrared imagery (0.7-1.0 mu m), approaching the diffraction limit, is collected on sunlit targets via an adaptive optics (A/O) system. Simultaneous LWIR(8-13 mu m) imagery is obtained with an infrared sensor that shares the high-resolution NIR imager's field of view through a dichroic beamsplitter. In order to minimize the thermal background, the LWIR imager is located close to the telescope, upstream of the A/O system. The LWIR resolution approaches the diffraction limit, due to the decreased impact of atmospheric turbulence at those wavelengths.

Robotic systems are being developed by the Intelligent systems and Robotics Center at Sandia National Laboratories to perform automated handling tasks with radioactive nuclear materials. These systems will reduce the occupational radiation exposure to workers by automating operations which are currently performed manually. Because the robotic systems will handle material that is both hazardous and valuable, the safety of the operations is of utmost importance;assurance must be given that personnel will not be harmed and that the materials and environment will be protected. These safety requirements are met by designing safety features into the system using a layered approach. Several levels of mechanical, electrical, and software safety prevent unsafe conditions from generating a hazard, and bring the system to a safe state should an unexpected situation arise. The system safety features include the use of industrial robot standards, commercial robot systems, commercial and custom tooling, mechanical safety interlocks, advanced sensor systems, control and configuration checks, and redundant control schemes. The effectiveness of the safety features in satisfying the safety requirements is verified using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. This technique can point out areas of weakness in the safety design as well as areas where unnecessary redundancy may reduce the system reliability.

The Honda Institute of Technology and the Phillips Laboratory have developed several advanced visible (0. 4 -0. 8μm) Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (IFTS) brassboards, which simultaneously acquire one spatial and one spectral dimension of the hyperspectral image cube. The initial versions of these instruments may be scanned across a scene or configured with a scan mirror to pick up the second spatial dimension of the image cube. The current visible hyperspectral imagers posses a combination offeatures, including (i) low to moderate spectral resolution for hundreds/thousands of spectral channels, (ii) robust design, with no moving parts, (hi) detector limited free spectral range, (iv) detector-limited spatial and spectral resolution, and (v) field widened operation. The utility of this type of instrument reaches its logical conclusion howev with an instmment designed to acquire all three dimensions of the hyperspectral image cube (both spatial and one spectral) simultaneously. In this paper we present the (i) detailed optical system designs for the brassboard instruments (ii) the current data acquisistion system, (iii) data reduction and analysis techniques unique to hyperspectral sensor systems which operate with photometric accuracy, and (iv) several methods to modify the basic instrument design to allow simultaneous acquistion of the entire hyperspectral image cube. The hyperspectral sensor systems which are being developed and whose utility is being pioneered by Florida Tech and the Phillips Laboratory are applicable to numerous DoD and civil applications including (1) space object identification, (ii) radiometrically correct satellite image and spectral signature database observations (iii) simultaneous spatial/spectral observations of booster plumes for stratigic and surrogate tactical misile signature identification, and (iv) spatial/spectral visible and infrared astronomical observations with photometric accuracy. © 1994 SPIE.
