The direct measurement of the external loads acting on a mechanical component represents often a challenge in many engineering applications. In this context, the attention of many researchers is focused on the field of inverse load identification. Several techniques are proposed in literature to address this problem by means of experimental methodologies, often coupled with simulation solutions. In this paper, a Kalman-based methodology is considered, which solves the problem of inverse load identification in a predictive manner. The common issue of most of the techniques is the selection of an optimal set of sensors which gives the best load estimation. In the Kalman-filtering framework, an Optimal sensor Placement (OSP) strategy has been proposed by the authors and it aims to find the best set of sensors in terms of system observability, which is the minimum requirement of a stable estimation. However, this does not guarantee the most accurate load estimation. In this contribution, two alternative metrics are proposed, based on: i) steady-state error covariance of the estimation, ii) estimator bandwidth, with respect to the available set of measurements. Both criteria will be included in the existing OSP to improve the sensors selection. A comparison of the three strategies for multiple input/state estimation is discussed on an industrial-scale Finite Element Model, in order to show the improvement in the accuracy of the estimated quantities. Big data systems are being increasingly adopted by the enterprises exploiting big data applications to manage data-driven process, practices, and systems in an enterprise wide context. Specifically, big data systems and their underlying applications empower enterprises with analytical decision making (e.g., recommender/decision support systems) to optimize organizational productivity, competitiveness, and growth. Despite these benefits, big data applications face some challenges that include but not limited to security and privacy, authenticity, and reliability of critical data that may result in propagation of false information across systems. Data provenance as an approach and enabling mechanism (to identify the origin, manage the creation, and track the propagation of information etc.) can be a solution to above mentioned challenges for data management in an enterprise context. Data provenance solution(s) can help stakeholders and enterprises to assess the quality of data along with authenticity, reliability, and trust of information on the basis of identity, reproducibility and integrity of data. Considering the wide spread adoption of big data applications and the needs for data provenance, this paper focuses on (i) analyzing state-of-the-art for holistic presentation of provenance in big-data applications (ii) proposing a bio-inspired approach with underlying algorithm that exploits human thinking approach to support data provenance in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs). The proposed 'Think-and-Share Optimization' (TaSO) algorithms modularizes and automates data provenance in WSNs that are deployed and operated in enterprises. Evaluation of TaSO algorithm demonstrates its efficiency in terms of connectivity, closeness to the sink node, coverage, and execution time. The proposed research contextualizes bio-inspired computation to enable and optimize data provenance in WSNs. Recent years have witnessed a significant expansion in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, especially in environmental monitoring, which aims at providing full coverage over potential targets. With energy harvesting ability, sensor devices can be replenished by external energy sources, and thus their lifetime is prolonged. While existing literature focuses on minimizing deployment costs, the reliability management is overlooked. Previous research has addressed that a higher temperature exponentially accelerates hardware failure rates. The versatile outdoor environments impose a non-negligible thermal stress on the hardware and consequently reduce the reliability of devices. In this paper, we are the first to propose a reliability-driven sensor deployment approach to achieve minimum nodes, while satisfying (i) full target coverage, (ii) complete connectivity, (iii) energy-neutral operation, and (iv) reliability constraints. Given external temperature distribution, we propose an algorithm to convert reliability constraints to a single-value power threshold for each location. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is formulated and solved with CPLEX. Due to the complex nature of MILP, we propose a heuristic, named Reliability-driven Two-Stage Heuristic (R-TSH), to approximate the optimal solution for large-scale problems. Extensive simulations are performed on a real-world dataset from the National Solar Radiation Database. Our results indicate that R-TSH meets all reliability constraints with only 20% more sensors than the optimal solution, while executing more than 1500x faster. Compared to state-of-the-art heuristics, R-TSH avoids 20 - 80% of reliability violations with a comparable number of nodes and execution time.

The ability to continuously monitor tissue oxygenation in vivo is highly desired for a variety of biomedical applications. Implantable optical oxygen sensors can be constructed through incorporation of an oxygen-sensitive chromophore within a biocompatible polymer host. In this work, a Pd (ii) benzoporphyrin that absorbs (630 nm) and phosphoresces (810 nm) within the optical tissue window was incorporated into various biodegradable polymer matrices via electrospinning. A unique in situ fluorimeter setup was constructed and used to rigorously characterize the sensor performance in the physiologically relevant dissolved oxygen range (similar to 0-90 mu M) in 37 degrees C phosphate buffered saline. Single-component polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers exhibited high sensitivity (K-SV : 1.25 x 10(5) M-1) and monoexponential decay curves, indicating a homogenous chromophore environment. The ability to move from a single-component composition (PCL) to blended (PCL:gelatin) and core-shell systems (PCL: gelatin-PCL) without compromising the desirable properties of the single-component sensor was demonstrated. These variations may offer the potential to tune degradation time of the resulting sensor while maintaining high sensitivity and monoexponential decays. In contrast, blended 50:50 PCL:poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) exhibited significantly reduced sensitivity (K-SV : 6.66 x 10(4) M-1) and biexponential decays. Despite the observation of biexponential lifetime decays for PCL:PLGA, all electrospun sensors exhibited linear Stern-Volmer behavior over the physiologically relevant dissolved oxygen range. This work rigorously evaluated biodegradable candidates for in vivo oxygen sensing under physiologically relevant conditions in which the character of the individual phosphorescence decay curves offered insight into the nature of the chromophore environment.

Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment of a Driver Monitoring System

The incorporation of Driver Monitoring systems (DMSs) in vehicles is fundamental to enhancing road safety by continuously assessing driver behavior and identifying signs of fatigue or distraction. However, as these technologies evolve, they also present considerable cybersecurity challenges. This research undertakes an extensive Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) of DMSs, adhering to the ISO/SAE 21434 standard, to methodically detect and assess potential security threats. A total of 115 threats were recognized and classified into 95 low-risk, 16 medium-risk, and 4 high-risk scenarios, underscoring key vulnerabilities in data transmission, sensor reliability, and communication frameworks. To mitigate these risks, we suggest a range of countermeasures, including enhanced encryption techniques, stringent authentication protocols, and reinforced access control mechanisms, designed to strengthen the security posture of DMSs in practical applications. This study introduces a structured framework for evaluating and addressing cybersecurity threats in alignment with industry regulations, facilitating the dependable and safeguarded implementation of DMSs in future vehicle architectures while contributing to ongoing progress in automotive cybersecurity.

Rapid and reliable monitoring of Cu and glyphosate levels is important owing to their widespread use and associated health risks in food systems. Herein, we developed a multifunctional fluorescent sensor, (E)-2-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-3-(8-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)-julolidin-9-yl)acrylonitrile (LCY), via a straightforward Knoevenagel condensation reaction for sequential detection of Cu and glyphosate. The sensor LCY exhibited exceptional sensitivity, achieving remarkably low limits of detection of 148 nM for Cu and 53.8 nM for glyphosate, levels that are well-suited for food safety monitoring. On binding Cu in 1:1 stoichiometry, LCY underwent an instantaneous color change from yellow to purple-red and a fluorescence "turn-off" response driven by chelation-enhanced quenching. These interactions were systematically investigated using H nuclear magnetic resonance titration, infrared spectroscopy, and computational modeling. Crucially, LCY demonstrated reversible binding, enabling the detection of glyphosate through a competitive displacement assay involving HPO. To validate its real-world food safety applications, LCY was integrated into test strips for rapid, on-site, naked-eye detection of Cu ions in food samples. Furthermore, a smartphone-assisted platform was developed for user-friendly, low-cost, and accurate detection of both analytes in food and environmental matrices. This dual-mode sensing approach offers a portable and efficient tool for food quality control, contributing to public health protection and regulatory compliance.

Urban mobility especially vehicular mobility is important for many real-world applications. A lot of work has been done based on data from mobile sensor networks and stationary sensor networks, where each of them has its only weakness in spatiotemporal coverage and penetration rates. In this paper, we aim to coordinate the strength of heterogeneous sensor networks to achieve mobility modeling. Specifically, we design a mobility prediction system called Mohen to predict the destination of all the vehicles after they leave the coverage of stationary sensors with (i) only small portion vehicles with mobile sensors (i.e., GPS devices);(ii) historical data from stationary sensors (i.e., toll stations). The key novelty of Mohen is that we utilize the complementary features from heterogeneous sensor networks that mobile sensor networks provide better spatiotemporal coverage whereas stationary sensor networks capture vehicles with high penetration rates. We implement and evaluate Mohen in Guangdong Province, China by two real-world datasets, an electric toll collection (ETC) data set of 2 million vehicles, and an insurance-based vehicular tracking system of 114 thousand vehicles and show the accuracy of 75%. © 2019 Authors.

We review and explore sensor applications based on electromagnetic systems operating near an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD). The EPD is defined as the point at which the system eigenmodes coalesce in both their eigenvalues and eigenvectors varying a system parameter. sensors based on EPDs show sensitivity proportional to $\delta^{1/{m}}$, where $\delta$ is a perturbation of a system parameter and m is the order of the EPD. EPDs manifest in PT-symmetric systems or periodic systems that can be periodic in either time or space. We review all the methods to obtain EPD based sensors, and we focus on two classes of ultra-sensitive EPD systems: i) periodic linear time-varying single oscillators, and ii) optical gyroscopes based on a modified coupled resonators optical waveguide (CROW) exhibiting 4th order EPD.

The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the interactions occurring at the organic – inorganic interface between solid media and aqueous contaminants for water treatment and sensor applications. The gaps in current literature on these interfacial organic-inorganic interactions must be bridged in order to develop advanced water treatment and monitoring technologies for improving water quality and thus, restore and protect the contaminated water resources. As a part of this dissertation, manganese oxides-based composites and electrospun polymer mats were developed and investigated for gaining mechanistic insights of organic (bisphenol A and acetaminophen) and inorganic (uranium) contaminants removal, respectively. These reactions were studied for (i) surficial changes on the solid media (ii) removal mechanism of aqueous contaminant and (iii) processes affecting the removal kinetics using multiple techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemistry and kinetic modelling. The specific research objectives for the first study was to evaluate the removal of Bisphenol A by commercial MnO and synthesized MnO using spectroscopic and aqueous chemistry techniques. The removal of 99.7% BPA was observed by applying synthesized MnO, while 71.2% BPA removal was observed by applying commercial MnO after 44 hours of reaction of 10 mM MnO media with 1mM BPA at pH 5.5. The reduction of Mn was detected in the surface of both BPA reacted media, but a higher content of reduced Mn was observed in synthesized MnO. The reaction of BPA with synthesized MnO fit the electron transfer-limited model, while the reaction of BPA with Com-MnO had a better fit for surface complex formation-limited model. These results suggest that BPA removal and the reactivity of MnO are affected by the differences in surface area and impurities present in these media.
