Third generation's wireless communications systems comprise advancedsignalprocessingalgorithms that increase the computational requirements more than ten-fold over 2G's systems. Numerous existing and emerging standards require flexible implementations ("software radio"). Thus efficient implementations of the performance-critical parts as Turbo decoding on programmable architectures are of great interest. Besides high-performance DSPs, application-customized RISC cores offer the required performance while still maintaining the aspired flexibility. This paper presents for the first time Turbo decoder implementations on customized RISC cores and compares the results with implementations on state-of-the-art vLIW DSPs. The results of our studies show that the Log-MAP performance is about 50% higher that on an ST120, a current vLIW architecture.

We develop new algorithms and architectures for matrix multiplication on configurable hardware. These designs significantly reduce the latency as well as the area. Our designs improve the previous designs in terms of the area/speed metric where the speed denotes the maximum achievable running frequency. The area/speed metrics for the previous designs and our design are 14.45, 4.93, and 2.35, respectively, for 4 /spl times/ 4 matrix multiplication. The latency of one of the previous design is 0.57 /spl mu/s, while our design takes 0.15 /spl mu/s using 18% less area. The area of our designs is smaller by 11% - 46% compared with the best known systolic designs with the same latency for the matrices of sizes 3 /spl times/ 3 - 12 /spl times/ 12. The performance improvements tend to grow with the problem size.

A new and efficient number theoretic algorithm for evaluating signs of determinants is proposed The algorithm uses computations over small finite rings. It is devoted to a variety of computational geometry problems, where the necessity of evaluating signs, of determinants of small matrices often arises.

Electron-optical image converters (EOIC) have been known to be useful in recording and investigating highspeed processes, nuclear physics experiments, automatic environmental control, medicine etc. In this paper the cathode ray tubes with the cathodoluminescent screen having a sufficiently high level of the radiation temporal coherence (particularly on the basis of rare-earth phosphors) are proposed to be utilised as devices for the dynamic data input into the holographic correlator for realisation of Tvsignal recognition in real time. This approach allows combining both the radiation source and the spatial light modulator functions in one compact device.

This paper shows the design and the evaluation of on-line arithmetic modules for the most common operators used in DSP applications, using FPGAs as the target technology. The designs are highly optimized for the target technology and the common range of precision in DSP. The results are based on experimental data collected using CAD tools. All designs are synthesized for the same type of devices (Xilinx XC4000) for comparison, avoiding rough estimates of the system performance, and generating a more reliable and detailed comparison of on-line signalprocessing solutions with other 'state of the art' approaches, such as distributed arithmetic. We show that on-line designs have a hard stand for basic DSP applications that use only addition and multiplication. However, we also show that on-line designs are able to overtake other approaches as the applications become more sophisticated, e.g. when data dependencies exist, or when non constant multiplicands restrict the use of other approaches.
