Searching for wideband short duration chirps is an important issue in spectrum surveillance. We propose a method and apparatus, inspired by optical tomography, by which a one-dimensional signal is converted to a two-dimensional image. This image has the remarkable property that it may disclose discernible structure. A chirp in additive white Gaussian noise, even undersampled, may be detected. The process is inherently linear and may be easily implemented by parallel processing or through the construction of an optoelectronic device.

This paper proposes two efficient architectures for hardware implementation of the advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm. The composite field arithmetic for implementing SubBytes (S-box) and InvSubBytes (Inverse S-box) transformations investigated by several authors is used as the basis for deriving the proposed architectures. The first architecture for encryption is based on optimized S-box followed by bit-wise implementation of MixColumns and AddRoundKey and optimized Inverse S-box followed by bit-wise implementation of InvMixColumns and AddMixRoundKey for decryption. The proposed S-box and Inverse S-box used in this architecture are designed as a cascade of three blocks. In the second proposed architecture, the block iii of the proposed S-box is combined with the MixColumns and AddRoundKey transformations forming an integrated unit for encryption. An integrated unit for decryption combining the block iii of the proposed InvSubBytes with InvMixColumns and AddMixRoundKey is formed on similar lines. The delays of the proposed architectures for VLSI implementation are found to be the shortest compared to the state-of-the-art implementations of AES operating in non-feedback mode. Iterative and fully unrolled sub-pipelined designs including key schedule are implemented using FPGA and ASIC. The proposed designs are efficient in terms of Kgates/Giga-bits per second ratio compared with few recent state-of-the-art ASIC (0.18-mu m CMOS standard cell) based designs and throughput per area (TPA) for FPGA implementations.

We propose a novel technique for the least-squares reconstruction of the Fourier phase of an image from the modulo-2(pi) phase of its bispectrum. The proposed technique unwraps the given bispectral phase and reconstructs the Fourier phase of the image iteratively through alternating projections onto two particular constraint sets: (1) the set of bispectral phase functions that differ from the given modulo-2(pi) bispectral phase by only integral multiples of 2(pi) at every sample point, and (2) the set of bispectral phase functions that correspond to deterministic signals. We formally define the above sets and their corresponding projection operators. We describe the iterative algorithm in detail, and provide experimental results to demonstrate its performance.

This paper presents a robust algorithm for image processing using generalized reaction-diffusion equations. An edge enhancing functional is proposed for image enhancement. A number of super diffusion operators is introduced for fast and effective smoothing. Statistical information is utilized for robust edge-stopping and diffusion rate estimation. A unification of computational methods is discussed. The unified computational method is employed for the numerical integration of the generalized reaction-diffusion equations. Computer experiments indicate that the present algorithm is very efficient for edge-detecting and noise-removing.

We describe a concept in which an array of coupled nonlinear oscillators is used for beamforming in phased array receivers. The signal that each sensing element receives, beam steered by time delays, is input to a nonlinear oscillator. The nonlinear oscillators for each element are in turn coupled to each other. For incident signals sufficiently close to the steering angle. the oscillator array will synchronize to the forcing signal whereas more obliquely incident signals will not induce synchronization. The beam pattern that results can show a narrower mainlobe and lower sidelobes than the equivalent conventional linear beamformer. We present a theoretical analysis to explain the beam pattern of the nonlinear oscillator array.

In this paper, we report on efforts to develop signal processing methods appropriate for the detection of man-made electromagnetic signals in the nonlinear and nonstationary underwater electromagnetic noise environment of the littoral. Using recent advances in time series analysis methods [Huang et al., 1998], we present new techniques for detection and compare their effectiveness with conventional signal processing methods, using experimental data from recent field experiments. These techniques are based on an empirical mode decomposition which is used to isolate signals to be detected from noise without a priori assumptions. The decomposition generates a physically motivated basis for the data.

The detection of small floating targets in an ocean environment is discussed in this paper. Because of the time-varying nature of the growler's radar returns, classical detection schemes do not work well. It is shown that these problems can be overcome if the detection is performed in the joint time-frequency plane. The effectiveness of the detection scheme is demonstrated by looking at two specific aspects of the problem: (1) detection of the target when the radar is scanning a certain sector, and (2) when the radar is dwelling in a certain azimuthal direction for a longer period of time.

This paper presents an application of formal mathematics to create a high performance, low power architecture for time-frequency and time-scale computations implemented in asynchronous circuit technology that achieves significant power reductions and performance enhancements over more traditional approaches. Utilizing a combination of concepts from multirate signal processing and asynchronous circuit design, a case study is presented dealing with a new architecture for the fast Fourier transform, an algorithm that requires globally shared results. Then, the generalized distributive law is presented as an important paradigm for advanced asynchronous hardware design.

This paper addresses the problem of mobile radio propagation channel modeling and underlines the need for further research in this domain. The paper first describes three characteristics of the mobile radio propagation channel which are the propagation-path loss, the time-varying aspect, and the multipath characteristics. It then describes the properties and limitations of the present methods used for channel modeling. The main limitation concerns the non-stationary aspect of the mobile radio propagation channel. Two signal processing approaches are proposed to remedy the problem. Finally, the paper addresses the definition of validation criteria in order to evaluate and quantify the accuracy of each proposed model.

The sequence of Givens rotations used to update the upper triangular matrix R in a recursive QR decomposition may also be used to update the inverse transpose matrix R^-H. Alternative forms of square-root-free Givens rotation for updating the inverse transpose matrix are derived by representing and storing it in a different factorized form from that used before. The modified Givens rotations do not involve explicit division by the exponential forget factor and lead to an update algorithm equivalent to the one derived by Sakai using Recursive Modified Gram Schmidt orthogonalization.
