In this report, we propose combining the Total Variation denoising method with the high loss wavelet compression for high noise level images. Numerical experiments show that TV-denoising can bring more wavelet coefficients closer to zero thereby making the compression more efficient while the salient features (edges) of the images can still be retained.

We introduce a new space-time signal processing scheme that uses both transmitter diversity technique and beamforming technique for code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems. The introduced scheme achieves the diversity gain over Rayleigh fading channel through the transmitter diversity technique, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain by the beamforming technique. Bit error rate (BER) analyses are given each of the three cases in which the transmitter diversity, beamforming and introduced combined scheme are used, in the frequency-flat Rayleigh fading channel. The analytic results are shown to coincide with the Monte-Carlo simulation results. We show that the combined scheme is more robust to the channel correlation and the speed of mobile than the diversity and beamforming scheme. Furthermore, the combined scheme gives a reduced multiple-access-interference because of its beamforming capability.

The Jacobi method for singular value decomposition is well-suited for parallel architectures. Its application to signal subspace computations is well known. Basically the subspace spanned by singular vectors of large singular values are separated from subspace spanned by those of small singular values. The Jacobi algorithm computes the singular values and the corresponding vectors in random order. This requires sorting the result after convergence of the algorithm to select the signal subspace. A modification of the Jacobi method based on a linear objective function merges the sorting into the SVD-algorithm at little extra cost. In fact, the complexity of the diagonal processor cells in a triangular array get slightly larger. In this paper we present these extensions, in particular the modified algorithm for computing the rotation angles and give an example of its usefulness for subspace separation.

We consider the problem of detecting an unknown, random, stationary, non-Gaussian signal in Gaussian noise. The most commonly used method for this problem is the so-called energy detector which can not distinguish between Gaussian and non-Gaussian signals. Recently the use of bispectrum and/or trispectrum of the signal has been suggested for improving detection performance for non-Gaussian signals. In this paper we suggest the use of an integrated polyspectrum (bispectrum or trispectrum) to possibly further enhance detection performance and to improve computational efficiency of the detectors based upon polyspectrum. We investigate conditions under which use of the integrated bispectrum is appropriate. The detector structure is derived and its performance is evaluated via simulations and comparisons with several other existing approaches.

Time-frequency analysis of speech provides detailed information which may be used for the study of its production mechanisms and for recognition purposes. The smoothed Wigner-Ville distribution can be used as an effective speech analysis tool when a high temporal resolution is required. Smoothing demands a careful balance between resolution and suppression of interferences in the distribution while taking into account the characteristics of the speech signal. The resulting representation is applied to analyze nasal phonemes and transitions in continuous speech and shown to unveil important transitory features not revealed by the spectrogram and to result in accurate segmentation and discrimination of their place of articulation.

This paper shows the design and the evaluation of on-line arithmetic modules for the most common operators used in DSP applications, using FPGAs as the target technology. The designs are highly optimized for the target technology and the common range of precision in DSP. The results are based on experimental data collected using CAD tools. All designs are synthesized for the same type of devices (Xilinx XC4000) for comparison, avoiding rough estimates of the system performance, and generating a more reliable and detailed comparison of on-line signal processing solutions with other 'state of the art' approaches, such as distributed arithmetic. We show that on-line designs have a hard stand for basic DSP applications that use only addition and multiplication. However, we also show that on-line designs are able to overtake other approaches as the applications become more sophisticated, e.g. when data dependencies exist, or when non constant multiplicands restrict the use of other approaches.

The Sensor-Angle Distribution (SAD) is a recently introduced tool representing the power arriving at each sensor as a function of angle (or spatial frequency). It can be used to characterize near-field scatter environments. The SAD, as originally introduced, under-sampled the spatial correlation of the received signal (measured at each sensor) causing the SAD to be aliased for common source location cases. In this paper we indicate how this may be overcome. Additional results are provided showing that the SAD may be implemented as a multiple weighted subarray beamformer.

A femtosecond electromagnetic pulse propagating in a linear dispersive medium is analyzed in phase spaces of (space, wave number) and (time, frequency). First moment densities are computed as eigenvalues of differential operators acting on Hilbert ray representations of the pulse in relevant domains. These moment densities are used as metrics in the relevant phase spaces to measure the local mean values and their deviations in position and wavenumber, and in time and frequency. For example, arrival times of the pulse over its spectral content are computed as the mean arrival time at a particular frequency to within one half the local deviation at that frequency. These metrics on the pulse are compared to the relevant phase space Wigner distribution.

Exhaustive scheduling and retiming of digital signal processing systems

Scheduling and retiming are important techniques used in the design of hardware and software implementations of digital signal processing algorithms. In this paper, techniques are developed for generating all scheduling and retiming solutions for a strongly connected data-flow graph, allowing a designer to explore the space of possible implementations. Formulations are developed for two scheduling problems. The first scheduling problem assumes a bit-parallel target architecture. The formulation for this problem is general because it considers retiming the dataflow graph as part of scheduling, and this formulation reduces to the retiming formulation as a special case. The second scheduling problem assumes a bit-serial target architecture. Based on these formulations, the conditions for a legal scheduling solution are derived, and a systematic technique is presented for exhaustively generating all legal scheduling solutions for a strongly connected data-flow graph. Since retiming is a special case of scheduling, this systematic technique can also be used for exhaustively generating all legal retiming solutions. A technique is also developed for exhaustively generating only those bit-parallel schedules which satisfy a given set of resource constraints, The techniques for exhaustively generating scheduling and retiming solutions are demonstrated for several filters. For example, we show that a simple filter such as the biquad has 224 possible retiming solutions for a latency of one time unit. We also show that a fifth-order wave digital elliptic filter has 4.7 million and 580 million scheduling solutions for iteration periods of 17 and 18, respectively.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications have been a hot research area in recent years. Most literature makes the assumption that the channel information is not known at the transmitter but known perfectly at the receiver. We focus on the situation where both the transmitter and the receiver know the channel information. We consider a transmit diversity scheme that maximizes the signal to noise ratio at the receiver. We analyze its performance in terms of capacity, duality and asymptotic behavior. By simulation, we compare this scheme with Alamouti's transmit diversity to show the advantage of utilizing the channel side information to improve the performance of the wireless systems.
