This paper describes a programmable radar signal processor architecture developed at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). The design incorporates T.I. TMS320C30 programmable digital signal processor devices, Xilinx programmable gate arrays, TRW FFT devices, and a parallel array of Inmos Transputer microprocessors. The architecture is extremely flexible and is applicable to a wide variety of applications.

A problem central to most high resolution methods of array processing is t he determination of the number of signals K from a finite set of observations. Two commonly used criteria which do not employ the use of a subjective threshold are the AIC and MDL both of which consist of a term of like' ihood function and a penalty term. The idea is to find a number K such that either of the criteria is mini nixed Examination of both criteria reveals that the likelihood function encompasses irrelevant parameter;resulting in the relatively inaccurate estimation of the relevant parameters. A new criterion is proposed here such that a new likelihood function is derived consisting of only the parameters having bearing to the determination of K. The improvement of the accuracy in the estimation of the relevant parameters is evaluated. This new criterion is put to test and computer simulations indicate that considerable improvement in performance is attained. © 1988 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. The Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific signal Processors (RASSP) program has as its goal the dramatic improvement of the process by which signal processors are specified, designed, documented, manufactured, and supported. A key part of the RASSP process is the method of architecture selection. An architecture overview is presented, together with a discussion of architecture classification, architecture evaluation factors, and signal processing flow. Two important architecture support aspects are briefly discussed: open systems architecture and integrated diagnostics. Recommendations for preferred approaches and rules of thumb for architecture selection are given. Finally, the RASSP architecture selection process is outlined, including a discussion of a standard hardware/software module interface.

Exact computations, performed with residues, occur in Number Theoretic Transforms and Residue Number System implementations. Once thought awkward to implement with standard logic circuits, the application of efficient small lookup tables, constructed with pipelined dynamic ROM's, allows very efficient construction of hardware ideally suited to residue operations. Linear DSP operations that are compute bound (require many arithmetic computations per input/output sample), are best suited for implementation with systolic arrays. For very high throughput operations, bit-level systolic arrays appear to be ideally suited to their implementation. The dynamic ROM's used for the residue computations, are a perfect vehicle for implementing such operations at the bit-level in a systolic architecture. This paper discusses VLSI architectures based on finite ring computations, using linear systolic arrays of small look-up tables. The advantage of this approach is that fixed coefficient multiplication requires no increase in hardware over that required for general addition, and the resulting structure is homogeneous in that only one cell type is required to implement all of the processing functions. Several advantages accrue in the VLSI setting, particularly clock rate increase, ease of testability and natural fault tolerance Three different approaches to implementing the finite ring/field residue calculations are discussed. The first uses a bit-level steering mechanism around small dynamic ROM's;two applications of this technique to digital signal processing are outlined. The other two techniques are based on a redundant binary representation implemented with a pipelined adder configuration, and an iterative solution technique based on neural-like networks. © 1989 SPIE. Amin et. al. recently developed a time-frequency MUSIC algorithm with narrow band models for the estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) when the source signals are chirps. In this research, we consider wideband models. The joint time-frequency analysis is first used to estimate the chirp rates of the source signals and then the DOA is estimated by the MUSIC algorithm with an iterative approach.

The research related to this paper was concerned with the application of Eigenvector Eigenvalue (EVEV) signal processing techniques to experimental data. The signal subspace methods of Schmidt 1 (called MUSIC), Johnson , and Pisarenko were considered and compared with results of conventional beamformers. Almost all oral and written papers regarding these EVEV processors involve theoretical studies, possibly using simulated data and incoherent noise, but not experimental data. Contrary to that trend, we have reported behavior of EVEV processors using experimental data in this and other papers. The data used here are predominantly due to an HF radio experiment, but the distribution of eigenvalues is also reported for acoustic data. The paper emphasizes two general subtopics of signal subspace processing. First, the eigenvalues of sampled covariance matrices are examined and related to those of incoherent noise. These results include actual data, all of which we found were not Gaussian incoherent noise. A new test related to the ratio of eigenvalues is developed. The MDL and AIC criteria give misleading results with actual noise. Second, directional responses of EVEV and conventional processors are compared using HF radio data that has high signal-to-noise ratio in the non-Gaussian noise. MUSIC is found to have very favorable directional characteristics. © 1988 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. All rights reserved.

We present an algorithm-based fault tolerant scheme for QR decomposition, that extends the well-known Gentleman-Kung-McWhirter triangular systolic array architecture. Assuming that the array is subject to transient faults, widely separated in time and each affecting a single processor, we give an algorithm that corrects the full triangular array with computational overhead equivalent, on average, to the interpolation of a single extra vector into the data stream.

An efficient algorithm is presented for computing the continuous wavelet transform and the wideband ambiguity function on a sample grid with uniform time spacing but arbitrary sampling in scale. The method is based on the chirp z-transform and requires the same order of computation as constant-bandwidth analysis techniques, such as the short-time Fourier transform and the narrowband ambiguity function. An alternative spline approximation method which is more efficient when the number of scale samples is large is also described.

Originally coined by the sensory psychologist Roger Shepard in the 1960's, chroma transforms frequency into octave equivalence classes. By extending the concept of chroma to chroma strength and how it varies over time, we have demonstrated the utility of chroma in simplifying the processing and representation of signals dominated by harmonically-related narrowband components. These investigations have utilized an ad hoc procedure for calculating the chromagram from a given time-frequency distribution. The present paper is intended to put this ad hoc procedure on more sound mathematical ground.

Subband-domain algorithms provide an attractive technique for wideband radar array processing. The subband-domain approach decomposes a received wideband signal into a set of narrowband signals. While the number of processing threads in the system increases, the narrowband signals within each subband can be sampled at a correspondingly slower rate. Therefore, the data rate at the input is similar to that at the output of the subband processor. There are several advantages to the subbanding method. It can simplify typical radar algorithms such as adaptive beamforming and equalization by the virtue of reducing subband signal bandwidth, thereby potentially reducing the computational complexity over an equivalent tapped-delay line approach. It also allows for a greater parallelization of the processing task, hence enabling the use of slower and less power consuming hardware. In order to evaluate the validity of the subbanding approach, it is compared with conventional processing methods. This paper focuses on adaptive beamforming and pulse compression performance for a wideband radar system. The performance of an adaptive beamformer is given for a polyphase filter based subband approach and is measured against narrowband processing. SINR loss curves and beampatterns for a subband system are presented. Design criteria for subband polyphase filter processing that minimizes signal distortion are provided and the distortion is characterized. Finally subband-domain pulse compression is demonstrated and compared with the conventional approach.
