The problem of detecting micropotentials in high resolution ECGs is of great importance to predict ventricular tachycardia. Since both conventional time domain and frequential domain methods present serious limitations, we address this problem using a high resolution time frequency method. The possibilities of the spectrogram and Wigner distribution (WD) are evaluated in order to analyze ECGs acquired both on patients with and without ventricular tachycardia. Furthermore, quantitative features are extracted from those representations in order to discriminate the two classes.

Impulsive transient signals have been difficult to characterize and classify using traditional signal processing methods. We show that time-frequency distributions can effectively characterize the transient response of an acoustical cavity. Class-dependent kernels developed from time-frequency distributions are used to successfully classify the impulsive transients.

Some recent results in the theory of adaptive array detection are presented. Detection curves are given for various detection algorithms. These detection algorithms are suitable for nulling out noise or interference sources in which the noise statistics are to be estimated from target- free data. They share the constant false alarm rate property, so that their false alarm rate can be set without knowledge of the noise covariance matrix. Also considered is a detection algorithm employing diagonal loading.

This paper describes a technique for classification of 2-D discrete signals. It consists of four modules, namely the partition, representation, measurement, and the classification modules. The first of these either passes the observed signal as a whole or divides it into subregions which may or may not overlap. The representation module first computes the shift-invariant multiscale wavelet representations (MSWAR) of the reference and the observed signals and then generates a corresponding set of 1-D signatures. The measurement module extracts those vital signal features to which the decision rules of the classification module are applied. The paper presents the design and implementation of each of these modules, emphasizing theoretical background behind the design and efficiency of their implementation. Also some preliminary results have been included that demonstrate the ability of this technique to classify observed signals that are corrupted by different types of deformities.

Cumulants are employed for classification and synthesis of textured images because they suppress additive Gaussian noise of unknown covariance and are capable of resolving phase and causality issues in stationary non-Gaussian random fields. Their performance is compared with existing autocorrelation based approaches which offer sample estimates of smaller variance and lower computational complexity. Nonlinear matching techniques improve over linear equation methods in estimating parameters of non-Gaussian random fields especially under model mismatch. Seasonal 1-D sequences allow for semi-stationary 2-D models and their performance is illustrated on synthetic space variant textures. The potential of prolate spheroidal basis expansion is also described for parsimonious nonstationary modeling of space variant textured images.

This brief presents efficient single-rate architectures for the one-dimensional orthonormal discrete wavelet transform (DWT). This brief makes two contributions, First, we show that architectures that are based on the quadrature mirror filter (QMF) lattice structure require approximately half the number of multipliers and adders than corresponding direct-form structures. Second, we present techniques for mapping the 1-D orthonormal DWT to folded and digit-serial architectures which are based on the QMF lattice structure. For folded architectures, we discuss two techniques for mapping the QMF lattice structure to hardware. For digit-serial architectures, we show that any two-channel subband system can be implemented using digit-serial processing techniques by utilizing the polyphase decomposition Using this result, we describe an orthonormal DWT architecture which uses the QMF lattice structure and digit-serial processing techniques, The proposed folded and digit-serial QMF lattice structures are attractive choices for implementations of the orthonormal DWT which require low area and low power dissipation.

We generalize the concept of the autocorrelation function to arbitrary physical variables and show how it can be used to define a local autocorrelation function. Using the local autocorrelation function we develop a new method to generate densities for arbitrary physical quantities. In addition, we show that the generalized autocorrelation function can be used to characterize functions with respect to a physical property.

This paper consists of two parts. The first part reviews a class of higher-order Wigner-Ville distributions projected onto a single frequency axis. This class is referred to as polynomial Wigner-Ville distributions (PWVDs). For random processes, the expected value of PWVDs represent time-varying higher-order moment spectra. The second part defines and studies a particular member of a class of time-varying higher-order spectra based on PWVDs, namely a reduced Wigner-Ville trispectrum (RWVT). This novel time-frequency representation is shown to be a very efficient tool for analysis of FM signals affected by Gaussian amplitude modulation. In the paper, we present a statistical comparison of the RWVT and WVD based instantaneous frequency estimates for linear FM signals in absence and in presence of multiplicative noise. For multicomponent signals, the RWVT has to be re-defined and calculated in the full multi-lag domain.

This paper presents an investigation into the performance evaluation of advanced complex instruction set computer (CISC) processors, reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processors and digital signal processing (DSP) devices in the real-time implementation of signal processing and control algorithms. The algorithms considered are of varying degree of regularity relative to one another. These include a fast Fourier transform algorithm, a second-order correlation algorithm, two adaptive filtering algorithms, a simulation algorithm of a flexible manipulator system and simulation, identification and active vibration control algorithms of a flexible beam system. The algorithms are implemented on an 80486DX2 CISC processor, an 80386DX CISC processor, a SPARC TMS390S10 RISC processor, a T805 RISC processor, an 80i860 RISC processor and a TMS320C40 DSP device. The hardware and software resources and capabilities of the processors and the characteristics of the algorithms are discussed to provide a matching between the algorithms and the architectures. Finally, a comparison of the results of the implementations, on the basis of real-time computation performance, is made and discussed.
