This paper addresses the problem of designing signals for general group representations subject to constraints which are formulated as convex sets in the Hubert space of the group states. In particular, the paper considers irreducible representations in an infinite dimensional Hubert space and derives an iterative procedure for proceeding from an arbitrary element of the Hubert space to a state of the group subject to a priori imposed constraints with closed convex range. As examples, the paper focusses on narrowband and wideband radar ambiguity synthesis. © 1990 SPIE. All rights reserved.

We develop an algorithm for adaptively estimating the noise subspace of a data matrix, as is required in signal processing applications employing the 'signal subspace' approach. The noise subspace is estimated using a rank-revealing QR factorization instead of the more expensive singular value or eigenvalue decompositions. Using incremental condition estimation to monitor the smallest singular values of triangular matrices, we can update the rank-revealing triangular factorization inexpensively when new rows are added and old rows are deleted. Experiments demonstrate that the new approach usually requires O(n2) work to update annxn matrix, and accurately tracks the noise subspace. © 1990 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Effective signal detection and feature extraction in noisy environments generally depend on exploiting some knowledge of the signal. When the signal is exactly known, the matched filter is the optimum signal processing strategy. Other signal processing strategies succeed when the signal detail is but partially known. The short-time Fourier transform and the Gabor transform are two methods that exploit signal envelope information. The former is a well known and widely used representation which is important in many fields. The related but distinct Gabor transform has been less frequently used, but has features absent in Fourier analysis. This paper compares the two transforms and makes the case that the Gabor representation can often be the more compact, and may require substantially less computation and storage in some applications. There is a sense in which the Gabor achieves a preferential trade of signal-to-noise ratio for resolution, and because of this, one can also expect better signal recognition and feature reconstructions from the Gabor transform in the presence of noise. © 1990 SPIE. We consider the problem of detecting a known Gaussian random transient in the presence of a strong, known, random, Gaussian, narrowband interference. This can be regarded as a special case of the classical problem of detecting a known Gaussian random signal in known Gaussian colored noise. There exists a standard solution for such a problem, based on the classical optimum detector for random signals in noise. However, such a detector does not explicitly use the non-stationary character of the signal as a priori available information. Reformulation of the optimum detection in the time-frequency plane allows one to exploit this distinguishing signal feature and suppress the stationary interference and noise. This is accomplished here by use of the Wigner-ville signal representation and an optimum signal/noise subspace decomposition that maximizes the transient signal to noise ratio. The new detection procedure eliminates the subspace where major part of the energy of random noise sample will fall while retaining almost all of the signal energy. In this fashion, a gain in the output signal to noise ratio is achieved as verified by simulations. © 1990 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Exact computations, performed with residues, occur in Number Theoretic Transforms and Residue Number System implementations. Once thought awkward to implement with standard logic circuits, the application of efficient small lookup tables, constructed with pipelined dynamic ROM's, allows very efficient construction of hardware ideally suited to residue operations. Linear DSP operations that are compute bound (require many arithmetic computations per input/output sample), are best suited for implementation with systolic arrays. For very high throughput operations, bit-level systolic arrays appear to be ideally suited to their implementation. The dynamic ROM's used for the residue computations, are a perfect vehicle for implementing such operations at the bit-level in a systolic architecture. This paper discusses VLSI architectures based on finite ring computations, using linear systolic arrays of small look-up tables. The advantage of this approach is that fixed coefficient multiplication requires no increase in hardware over that required for general addition, and the resulting structure is homogeneous in that only one cell type is required to implement all of the processing functions. Several advantages accrue in the VLSI setting, particularly clock rate increase, ease of testability and natural fault tolerance Three different approaches to implementing the finite ring/field residue calculations are discussed. The first uses a bit-level steering mechanism around small dynamic ROM's;two applications of this technique to digital signal processing are outlined. The other two techniques are based on a redundant binary representation implemented with a pipelined adder configuration, and an iterative solution technique based on neural-like networks. © 1989 SPIE. This paper presents a versatile chip set that can realize signal/image processing algorithms used in several important image processing applications, including template-processing, spatial filtering and image scaling. This chip set architecture is superior in versatility, programmability and modularity to several schemes proposed in the literature. The first chip, called the Template Processor, can perform a variety of template functions on a pixel stream using a set of threshold matrices that can be modified or switched in real-time as a function of the image being processed. This chip can also be used to perform data scaling and image biasing. The second chip, called the Filter/Sealer chip, can perform two major functions. The first is a transversal filter function where the number of sample points is modularly extendable and the coefficients are programmable. The second major function performed by this chip is the interpolation function. Linear or cubic B-spline interpolation algorithms can be implemented by programming the coefficients appropriately. The essential features of these two basic building block processors and their significance in template-based computations, filtering, data-scaling and half-tone applications are discussed. Structured, testable implementations of these processors in VLSI technology and extensions to higher performance systems are presented. © 1988 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Linear Algebra (i. e. , the algebra of vector spaces) provides widely used mathematical tools and concepts which are today considered for implementation in special computer architectures. It seems that so many signal processing problems can be expressed and, more importantly, implemented efficiently as a sequence of vector and matrix operations, that a signal processing system with a capability for high speed linear algebra is necessary if the more advanced signal processing algorithms are to be implemented to operate in real time. This paper supports the notion that linear algebra is a sound basis for important signal processing system implementations and suggests that multilinear algebra (i. e. , the algebra of vector, bivector, trivector, etc. spaces) offers an even broader set of signal processing tools. Examples and ideas from direction finding and time series analysis are discussed.

Architectural solutions to large signal and data processing problems can now in many cases be implemented in VLSI-complexity silicon integrated circuits in a majority of cases, provided that the economic constraints of design costs, unit costs, and schedule can be resolved. However, for a small subclass of signal processing tasks involving very high input data bandwidths and/or large volume computation, VLSI implementations of parallel architectures are a useful but incomplete solution, or in some cases even an inadequate one;alternate device technologies, e.g., high speed Gallium Arsenide digital components, must be considered for very high clock rate processors. This paper explores the tradeoffs between architectures and device technologies and the roles which they can play in very high bandwidth classical signal processing tasks. © 1983 SPIE.
