The algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT) provides low-cost error protection for VLSI processor arrays used in real-time digital signal processing. Several ABFT techniques (weighted check-sum) have be proposed to design fault-tolerant LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and matrix inversion. In these schemes, encoding/decoding uses either multiplication or division so that overhead is high. In this paper, we propose new encoding/decoding methods for designing fault-tolerant matrix operations. Since the new encoding/decoding methods use only additions and subtractions, the overhead of a fault-tolerant processor array can be drastically reduced.

This paper examines the problem of instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation for Frequency Modulated (FM) signals imbedded in white Gaussian noise. It reviews currently available techniques and in addition proposes some new ones based on a modelling of the signal phase as a polynomial. Both linear least-squares techniques and Maximum Likelihood (ML) techniques are investigated for estimating the polynomial coefficients. It is seen that the linear least squares approach is efficient (i. e. unbiased and meets the Cramer-Rao bounds) for high SNR while the ML scheme is efficient for a much larger range of SNR. Theoretical lower variance bounds are given for estimating the polynomial coefficients and are compared with the results of simulations. Guidelines are given as to which estimation method should be used for a given signal class and signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) level.

Estimation and tracking of the instantaneous amplitudes and frequencies of superimposed, slowly varying narrowband signals is a difficult signal processing problem that shows up in many applications. Our approach to this problem is to achieve global noise averaging via SVD-based rank reduction of a matrix constructed from the entire data record. Compared to methods that use local noise averaging using many smaller matrices, the strength of the new approach is in affecting better noise reduction at a lower computational cost. Moreover, no model is needed for the variation of the amplitudes and frequencies with time. In this paper, Cramer-Rao bounds for the variance of the error in tracking the instantaneous amplitudes and frequencies (without assuming a parametric model for their variation with time) will be presented. In addition, we will also show how the algorithm can be used on sensor array data to estimate range and direction of multiple narrow-band sources.

A model for an infrared (M) flame detection system using artificial neural networks (ANN) is presented. The joint time-frequency analysis (JTFA) in the form of a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is used for extracting relevant input features for a set of ANNs. Each ANN is trained using the backpropagation conjugate-gradient (CG) method to distinguish all hydrocarbon flames from a particular type of environmental nuisance and background noise. signal saturation caused by the increased intensity of IR sources at closer distances is resolved by an adjustable gain control. A classification scheme with trained ANN connection weights was implemented on a digital signal processor for use in an industrial hydrocarbon flame detector.

Analytical approximations of translational subpixel shifts in both signal and image registrations are derived by setting the derivatives of a normalized cross correlation function to zero and solving them. Without the need of iterative searching, this methods achieves a complexity of only O(mn), given an image size of m x n. Without the need to upsample, computation memory is also saved. Tests using simulated signals and images show good results.

We address the question of the importance of satisfying the marginal conditions in a time-frequency distribution and discuss in detail the fundamental and practical issues involved. We also examine the marginals of the spectrogram. The spectrogram often gives reasonable results even though both marginals can never be satisfied exactly, but sometimes it can give very unreasonable results. We show by examples that the spectrogram gives the clearest characterization of the time-frequency properties of a signal when the combined error in both of its marginals is as small as possible. In contrast, when the error in either one of the marginals of the spectrogram is large, the time-frequency characterization degrades. Some different error measures are described. We discuss the issues involved both theoretically and by way of numerical simulations. We also address the issue of marginals for the random case.

Interceptor missiles process IR images captured by a focal plane array for locating and guiding the interceptor toward an intended target. A typical interceptor signal processing chain comprises two parts. Front-end video processing operates on all pixels of the image and performs such operations as non-uniformity correction (NUC), image stabilization, frame integration and detection. Back-end target processing, which tracks and classifies targets detected in the image, performs such algorithms as Kalman tracking, spectral feature extraction and target discrimination. signal processing requirements increased as sensor bandwidth increases and interceptors operate against more sophisticated targets. In the past, video processing was implemented using ASICs or FPGAs because computation requirements exceeded the throughput of general-purpose processors. Target processing was performed using hybrid architectures that included ASICs. DSPs and general-purpose processors. The resulting systems tended to be very function-specific, and required custom software development. These systems were developed using non-integrated toolsets, and test equipment had to be developed along with the processor platform. The lifespan of the interceptor platform on which the signal processors operate often spans decades, while the specialized nature of processsor hardware and software makes it difficult and costly to upgrade. As a result., the signal processing systems often run on outdated components, signal processing algorithms are difficult to update. and system effectiveness is impaired by the inability to rapidly, respond to new threats. A new design approach to interceptor signal processing is made possible by three developments: Moore's Law - driven improvement in computational throughput;a newly introduced vector computing capability in general-purpose processors and a modern set of open interface software standards. The problem of kernel design for Cohen time-frequency distributions is formulated as a blind deconvolution problem. It is shown that the iterative blind deconvolution method (IBDM) used in image restoration problems can be successfully applied to solve the kernel design problem. We obtain the following results: (1) the rate of convergence depends on which domains the constraints are imposed (2) certain constraints are needed for algorithm convergence (3) the more constrained the kernel design is, the faster the rate of convergence (4) there are tradeoffs between constraints, e.g., compact support vs. satisfaction of marginals;(5) time-frequency distributions which are more amenable to visual interpretation can be obtained using this algorithm.
